Couscous stood motionless beneath the wide shelter of a tree near the teepee. It was the day of celebrating mothers everywhere, and he had no mother to go to. No mother to celebrate the day with. He didn't know where she was. He had never seen her. A wistful sigh escaped his mouth, floating ephemerally upwards into the large stretch of sky. If only he had known his mother, perhaps he would not have gone through all the troubles in his past life that still remain forever scarred into his quilt of life.

He looked in the distance, and, by some clearing beside a stream of water, rested a few variety of flowers. He thoughtfully cantered up to them, thoughts of his unknown mother still embedded within his mind. He stopped, having reached his destination. He slowly bent down and sniffed a flower. It was bright yellow in color, and almost glowed with radiance as brilliant as the sun. He picked it up gently in his mouth, making an extra precaution to not smash or grind the head of the flower in his jaw. A mystical tune then erupted peacefully from himself as he started to hum to the rhythm of nature...

He stopped. What was that melody? Was it... Could it have been something his mother hummed to him before he ever saw the light of day? He shivered, disturbed by evocative melody. Perhaps it was just his imagination.

He ran to the nearest cliff he knew of, and stayed hesitantly close to the ledge for a while. The flower was still in his clutches, but he calmed it down by telling it that he would not stay with it any longer. Faltering, he managed to n** off a stray hair from himself, and, as if it were destined to happen, the single hair strand tangled and intertwined itself to the flower. The flower almost seemed to thrash in Couscous's mouth, almost as if it no longer wished to be in his presence. Admitting to the flower's will, he opened his mouth wide, letting the flower slip away to the frenzied winds.

He simpered, hoping the flower would someday reach his mother. The hair would identify him, and perhaps one day, mother can find her long lost son, and the two would reunite at last.

One day.

Mothers Day. It was the one day of the year when soquili and humans alike were obliged to pay tribute to their mothers for the things they've done for them and the hardships they endured to give birth, spreading new life over the world. But Maize would not see her mother on this day; she had not seen her often in the days before that nor was it likely that she ever would see her birth mother again. Lethargically, she made her way to the place where she had seen her mother around so often - her indian's teepee and residential area, presumably. Her vision was transfixed on the soil right before her, as if the more steps she took, the more she paved her own way to doom. Eyes quickly darted left and right, making sure that she would be the only one there. It would be just a quick moment near the teepee -- nothing too long to let anyone catch the sight of her.

Hastily, she plucked a feather from her own wings as she supressed the silent pain that came with the plucking. She stood still for a moment in troubled reflection, her silhouette shivering displayed on the shadow that followed her. Could there possibly be... Another chance? Another life?

No. She shook her head disdainfully and let go of the feather, free to float away in the surrounding winds that treasured it. She turned back and instantly went into a speedy gallop. She never looked back, and the sun seemed to engulf her body as she ran over the horizon, back to her own home. And the feather hovered in the air, almost hesitant to touch the ground -- the feather that gave the telltale sign of Maize, daughter to Stormwild -- the feather that was the only remnant of the daughter to her mother.

And while Maize ran, she whispered under her breath, "May all the other mothers be at peace with their children. I leave this feather behind to all the soquili mothers of the world," she laughed, breath almost belated, "...May all soquili mothers have a peaceful mothers day..."

Unbeknownst to Maize, a large gust of wind blew the feather away from its position. It whirled in the wind before gently landing on the river and floating downstream, never to be seen by anyone again.

Roka trotted aimlessly around the teepee. His brow was furrowed, and he seemed to be in deep thought. He also seemed as if he were in a great rush to get somewhere -- but he wasn't going anywhere at all. His wings slapped his sides ferociously and his tail thundered mightily through the air as it trailed behind him. He was indeed, a sight to behold to one passing by at the time.

But no one was here except for him. He knew why, too. Everyone was off getting gifts or who knows what for their mothers. What was so special about today, anyways? Who designated this day to be a day for mothers? Roka mumbled to himself while pacing. It wasn't that the fact that mothers were celebrated today angered him -- he was simply baffled by the idea that many were going around asking others what they were to do for their mother today, and others were busy gifting their mothers, spending time with them instead of running off somewhere else to be free.

Normally, Roka would not be so troubled by something as insignificant as this. But he did have a boiling point and limit, like virtually everyone else in the world. Earlier, he had been asked several times by friends and family what he was going to give to his mother. He would give them a sure statement -- a reply of, "I'm not going to give mother anything, as I do not normally give her anything, and this day is just as normal as the rest. Does it make mother feel bad if I don't give her anything? Why would it?"

All the pestering - all the questions - all the bombarding! Why the bombardment? Why Roka? Poor little Roka? If only they had left him to himself to wander the universe.

"Maybe," he pondered to himself, "I will get mother something." A satisfied smile crept up his mouth as he scrambled to the nearest object he could find that was not stationary. "Alas! I have found something to give to mother. I hope she likes my gift." He gracefully trotted over to where he usually found his mother resting at, and, with a pleased dip, lowered his newly-found present to the ground. It had fit in his mouth for easy transportation, and so his mother would find it easily transportable as well, and would even be able to take the gift with her wherever she went!
