Joshua glanced at Joey, digging around in the boat. He was slightly curious as to what the boy was looking for. His eyes returned to Katalina's sleeping form. Right now, her safety overrode any curiousity he felt. Thankfully, the cove waters were fairly safe. The coral reefs protected the shallow waters.

Joey searched to whole boat, but couldn't find it, becoming increasingly agitated. "Damn...I can't find it! No...It...It must have fallen out when the boat sank!" Joe jumped into the water and started to swim out to where the boat had sunk.

Joshua heard splashing and turned to find Joey swimming away from shore. "Joey!" He called, trying to get the boy's attention. "What are you looking for?" 'It might be something I shoved in the bag.' He thought to himself. Maybe he could save Joey some effort.

Joey didn't hear Joshua and he continued to swim. He finally made it to where the boat sank and dove underwater. He looked around the coral. Seeing a something flash, he looked closer. He resurfaced. "There it is!!"

Joshua shrugged. It looked like Joey found whatever he'd been looking for. His gazed scanned the waters, searching. He was looking for anything that could harm Katalina. As deep in sleep as she appeared to be, he didn't think she'd be able to fight off a goldfish. 'Though, goldish can get really big.' Joshua's eyes danced in amusement at the thought. 'It's like an underwater version of a fairy tale. Princess mermaid held captive by giant goldfish. Hero saves her, and voila! Happily ever after.'

Joe calmed himself and dove, heading for it. It was stuck in between two pieces of coral. He clasped his hand around it and to his dismay, got his hand stuck. He was in a tough situation and he knew it.

The amusement disappeared from Joshua's eyes as he realized that Joey hadn't surfaced yet. He took a step towards where the boy had disappeared. Katalina vs Joey. A glance at Katalina showed the mermaid still peacefully sleeping. 'She'll be fine for a few moments.' He tried to convince himself. Steeling himself, Joshua took a deep breath then clipped on his mask. He ducked under the water and swam strongly for where Joey was. Even from a distance, the clear cove waters didn't impede his vision. Joshua saw Joey struggling with something on the sea floor. 'Hopefully, he can hold on till I get there.' Joshua had no doubts that if the boy could have surfaced, he already would have.

Joe stopped struggling, trying to keep from loosing his supply of air. His vision grew fuzzy and a black haze entered the side of his vision. He remembered when the mermaid talked to him, thinking about how helpful it would be to be able to do it. At least I am going like my friend. John...here i come He closed his eyes.

Joshua saw Joey's eyes close. 'Please don't let me be too late.' He begged of whatever gods were listening. 'I can't be too late.' His thoughts were full of fierce determination. After what seemed like years, he finally reached the older boy. Quick as a flash, Joshua pressed the mouthpiece of his air tank to Joey's mouth. Please, please, PLEASE don't let me be too late.' He waited for some response to show that the air was working.

Katalina thought, distantly, that she was hearing someone speaking. "At least I am going like my friend..." But that made no sense. The voice was too blurred by her half-asleep mind to be recognizable. Perhaps someone was in trouble, perhaps not.
The only three she'd spoken to this way - that she should hear - were Joshua and Joey and Lucian. No matter which of the three it was, there were two others to help him. And she, at the moment, was worse than useless, as she knew, in her distant subconscious, that she wasn't ready to awaken yet.
So she let it go and sank back into the welcome dark.

Joe breathed in, surprised by the mouthpiece in his mouth. he took a breath of fresh air and worked on freeing his hand. Finally, he got it free while still holding on to the object. His hand was bleeding, but the object he held up was a waterproof locket with a dog tag on the necklace also. Joe surfaced with Joshua.

Joshua surfaced with a gasp. Sputtering out water, he looked at Joey. "I hope that's important, whatever it is." He took back the breathing mask and attached it to a clip on the tank. Looking at Joey's hand Joshua sighed. "We'd better get that cleaned up. I have some supplies back at camp." And with that said, he struck out for shore.

"It is important...It is the only thing my parents left behind. This and the boat." He looked away. "It's ok, you don't have to. I will be fine." He started swimming back.

"Look." Joshua sighed, but didn't stop swimming. "You're here, I'm here, and the supplies are here. No point having them if they don't get used. Besides," He grinned wryly. "Do you want to get an infection and maybe lose the hand?"

Joe winced. "True that...Ok, you have convinced me. We first have to make landfall, though" Joe laughed while swimming, resulting in seawater entering his mouth.
