It was designed for a younger audience, and square highlighted it for it's "Simplified battle system" and "introductory level role playing". The highlights of the game are the interactive dungeons, simplified plot, and awesome soundtrack. But most players felt that it was overly simplified and not in-depth enough. The battle system is about on the same level as pokemon. @Dana: You've played Mystic Quest? Cause it isn't like other FF games.
