Joshua left Joey to wrestle with his thoughts. He had given his speel, now it was up to Joey. Joshua waded deeper into the water. He smiled at the mermaid. "So what happened Katalina?" He wanted to know if he'd been right. "Did you overexhert yourself?" His question hid another within it. 'Was I the cause of this?' was the realy question.

Katalina shrugged. "I overdid it just a little," she said easily. "As I believe I mentioned, I'm still young and irresponsible. I haven't quite learned my limits." Sitting on the sand with her tail coiled around her, she added, "But pushing them is the only way to get them to expand, anyway."
She took a closer look, and saw the question beneath. "It was nobody's fault but mine, Joshua," she added in a gentler tone. "I mistook my limits and paid for it. I'm sorry I scared you."

"Will you be more careful? Please?" Joshua knew he was almost pleading, but he didn't want to see Katalina collapse like that. "You scared me, just dropping like that." He tried to keep his voice light. "I don't need gray hair before my time." Joshua joked, brushing at his pale hair.

Katalina gave him that small crooked smile again. "Don't worry, Joshua. I can take care of myself." She gave a little shrug. "I know it doesn't seem that way, from all the mistakes I've made since I met you, but really, I can."
Then she looked steadily at him. "But if it'll make you happy, I'll keep an eye on it," she said reassuringly.

Joe watched the two talk. He didn't say anything, just listened. He had never had such a laid back conversation with somebody and it was interesting to hear it. He laid back in the sand, still unsure of what to do. I don't know, somebody help me...somebody...He drifted off to sleep.

"Thank you." Joshua sighed and ran his hand through his hair once. Letting his hand drop to his side, he waded back to shore. He called over his shoulder to her, glad his back was to Katalina. "I know you can take care of yourself. I have no doubts about that. I still worry though. I guess I'm just a mother hen." He spoke ruefully. Grabbing his gear, Joshua settled it on his back, checking his gages. 'Still good.' He thought, and turned back to the ocean waters. Joshua waded back out, smiling when the water lightened the weight of the tank.

Katalina swam smoothly alongside him, in apparently every respect back to her usual self. "It's okay," she said quietly, gazing across towards the coral even as she moved. "I...I'm just not used to having to answer for what I do. I've never had someone to worry about me."
She hoped that would make it better.

Joshua smiled at her. "I'm just not used to having anyone around me. Since you and Lucian came along, I've talked more than I have in the past year." He chuckled and slipped his face mask on. He wasn't planning on diving so he didn't bother with the breathing mask. He just wanted to look below the water. Joshua came back up every couple seconds for air.

Katalina nodded, her gaze still solemn. "I guess we both have things to learn," she replied seriously. "But," and here her voice grew comfortable again, "maybe it'll be good for us."
She spotted something on the ocean floor, dived, picked it up and brought it up to Joshua. "What's this?" she demanded, handing it to him.
She knew perfectly well that it was a broken bit of oyster shell, but she wanted to know if he would know what it was.

Lucian walked over to Joe and stood over him, blocking the sun. He then decided to sit on Joe’s chest and poke his cheeks. He glanced back at Joshua and Katalina ‘Welcome back sunshine…the earth says hello’and gave them a thumb up. He already finished off his soda and some of the cookies, but something caught Lucian’s attention while he was sitting on Joe. Something very shiny…but the boy looked like he was in pain. Lucian took a cookie and laid it on Joe’s mouth. He waited to see what kind of reaction he would get.

Joe gasped in surprise as the person sat on him. He was heavier than he looked. He stared then realized something. "Hey, you're the one who stole my food and drinks!!" He was rewarded with a cookie on his mouth. He twitched in annoyance and he bit the cookie, eating it in a few gulps. "What are you looking at?" Joe saw him looking at his chest, wondering what else was going to happen.

Joshua smiled at Katalina. "Maybe it will be good for us." Reaching out a hand, he took the object from Katalina. Turning it over in his hands, he examined the broken piece of shell. He looked slyly at Katalina. "Do you expect me to believe that a mermaid knows less of the ocean than a mere human does?" He asked, his voice light and teasing. "You know very well it's part of a shell. I'd think oyster shell to be specific." Joshua held the piece back out to Katalina.

Katalina waved back at Lucian. "Hello, earthling. The sunshine returned just for you!" she called back. Returning her attention to Joshua, she said with a magnificent look of mock disdain, "I should certainly hope not."
Ugh. She sounded just like her mother.
With a grin, she took the shell bit back and said, "Just checking. You can expect these little tests now and again." She leaned closer and whispered, "I used to test other mermaids this way. Some of them wouldn't have known what this was."

Lucian poked the necklace and smiled. He reached into the bag and placed another cookie on Joe’s mouth. Lucian continued to sit on Joe’s belly, still staying down at him. His horns were still out as he smiled and popped another cookie into his mouth. This human was fisty, which made Lucian only want to pick on him more.

"Hey guys." Rosalina called trotting down the beach towards Joshua and the group. "Who is the new addition?" she asked cocking an eyebrow and stifling laughter. Looked like the sea dragon was up to his normal antics. She reached into her pocket and pulled out a handful of shiny necklaces and bracelets. "Hey Lucian." she greeted him holding up the jewelry.
