Candidates: Asheryn, Rhey

Asheryn attempted to contain her excited squeal as the eggs began to hatch. They were so cute! And dangerous, she realized as one of the other candidates got mauled. She hoped it wasn't too bad, but it looked like a lot of blood. The sight served to temper Asheryn's excitement as her stomach roiled quietly. Excitement and blood was not a good combination.

She tore her attention away from the scene to watch the eggs and the hatchlings. A couple of them were heading toward the boys and her fingers itched to reach out and touch, but she kept them to herself as she chewed her lip.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Rhey's anxiety turned closer to eagerness as the first dragons began to hatch. They were beautiful! He'd never thought about what color he might Impress, if he Impressed, but part of him hoped for a green like his father. Honestly, he knew he would be deliriously happy whatever color he Impressed. He managed to smile as he watched the babies wobble around on their feet. They were really adorable...
And dangerous. One of the girls got gored with a wingclaw and Rhey're face went white as a sheet. What was he doing here again? Oh yeah, trying to Impress a dragon who didn't know its own strength and was as likely to maul him as Impress to him. And yet, as two of them made their way closer to the boys, he couldn't help moving a little closer to the front...
Riagan! Riagan!
The dark colored Blue dragonet searched among the Candidates, desperately seeking his friend and ally. How will we change the world if I cannot find you? Where have you gone? Oh, it wasn't very fair when his other half was missing! Or maybe there were simply a lot of Candidates to search through. Your Basanuth is hungry, and tired of looking for you, please come find him! As the Blue hatchling had not encountered any obstacles until this time, he truly did not know what to do.
And so he sat back down again, resting his wings and tired legs. Where was his? Weren't they supposed to fix everything? How could they do that if Riagan was hiding?
Oh. Oh. Hello, Goran-as-shield. That was an unexpected, but reassuring gesture, but at the same time worrisome in its own way. Nadry didn't want anyone to get hurt for her sake, but she didn't know how to object, and suspected it probably wouldn't do any good if even if she did. With little else to be done, she met Ichta's gaze and returned the nod with a small smile. It was as reassuring as their large friend's overt protectiveness. Together, the three of them would make it through this. They would be fine, all of them, and maybe even leave the Sands with Theirs.
Did Ichta have a favorite, too, she wondered? But it didn't seem the time to ask, though there was a bit of a lull in the chaos as the hatched dragonets searched for their riders, and more eggs started to wobble.
Alusia
Alusia found herself next to Lucayr and Emori, both riders of High Reaches. She was pleased that the younger man didn't seem to mind, and could always appreciate an amicable nature. She didn't know his companion as well, but her smile to both was genuine. "I promised to pick up a few extra shifts later, but it's well worth getting to be here now." Thankfully, the Weyr had been as accommodating to the staff as possible, especially those with Candidates on the Sands. Padmia was a fair woman, for all that she could be strict.
Luisalu almost flushed when Lucayr asked her about her own impending Candidacy. Still, she gave a nod, and offered a bright smile, even if she leaned into her mother a bit more. She wasn't used to such attention as her siblings or mother, but appreciate it. "Yes sir," she spoke, but as dragons began spilling forth, her attention was quick to turn to it.
While Lucayr spoke to her daughter, Alusia turned to the gentleman settled on the opposite side. "Good morning to you, too! A nice way to start the day, even if it is a bit early."
Her eyes turned back to the eggs, watching as they twitched and shook. A few of them even spilled out hatchlings. Her eyes danced from the eggs, to her children, and back; she hoped that her children might find their mates today, but also worried they might get in the way of one of the dragons, like the poor girl did.
"Do any of you have family or friends on the Sands today?" She asked the group cordially. She didn't want to distract from the Hatching itself, but it wasn't exactly a quiet or somber affair, either. Especially when there were only a few dragonets on the sands.
Riagan had barely taken his eyes off the blue since it hatched -nor had they even rarely left the shell since it first started shaking- though they did occasionally stray here and there with all the excitement that was going on in the sands. The blue seemed to be waiting for something. Someone maybe? He glanced over his shoulder and moved aside to make sure he wasn't blocking any candidates when it seemed to be having trouble finding one, when he heard someone calling in his head.
He didn't know how but with three hatchlings on the sands, he still somehow knew exactly where the voice was coming from. No. Way. His little purple friend. His ally. The one egg he'd really, really liked. There was no way he could be that lucky! He gave one brief glance back towards the stands, where his mother and sisters were sitting, before he started shakily moving forward, still half sure he was about to be mauled and then yelled at for approaching a hatchling. Nah, who was he kidding.. He was more sure about this than he was about anything. A smile took over as shaking steps turned to a run, though he was still practically quivering with excitement.
Basanuth! he said, wrapping his arms around the blue's neck, comforted by the feeling of his skin rising and falling with his breath. I'm here. I'm here
Vitre
Vitre would have entirely missed the blue impressing if he hadn't suddenly been swept up in the roar of a thundering audience. His head whipped this way and that until he at last spied the blue, sat back on his haunches again, eyes rippling rainbow. He...couldn't quite tell who down there had impressed (not that he knew any of their names any way) but he joined in the clapping all the same. Someone had found their dragon! Someone was a new rider! Amazing! And he'd seen it happen too. Anticipating swift action from the others now, he fixated on the greens. Who...were not as fast to impress. But still adorable! A few more eggs were wiggling too. Maybe a brown would come next, or more greens! There were supposed to be a lot of those, right?
V'mel
Ah. There it was. The first of the impressions. A blue, to a boy, quite fitting if you asked V'mel. Women on blues were alright too, but still a bit...well. As long as they could fight and pull their weight. "Over this way then," He called out to Riagan, lifting a rough hand to flag him down. The moment of impression was barely past, and already he was hustling the boy off the sands. The rest needed room, and his blue would need food. "Bring him here," He continued, glancing back to be sure everything was ready. It was going quickly. A relief, no need to waste meat. "If any impress while I get this one settled and eating, find out their names and call them over too, assistants." He eyed the greens again, and then focused in on Raigan once more. "Rather dark colored thing, isn't he? Well, handsome enough, and looks strong. A good sign."
Z'rik followed his eyes down to the sands and winced. Looked like hurt, though he'd definitely seen worse, obviously. She'd likely be fine though. "Roger that, sir." Z'rik responded, finishing strapping his regular prosthetic into place before her rolled down his sleeve. He went down to talk to one of the journeymen at the healer station, and got one to follow him back up to the weyrling area to stand by. If the girl didn't impress and none others were injured (though that seemed unlikely) they could always head back down, but they would get the injured here first before they would be released to help those remaining candidates on the sands.
As far as keeping her calm goes, having been on the other side of it, he knew how that went. And Azmodioth was standing by as well to calm any young dragons that needed reassurance.
Ellain fretted silently as she stood with the other female Candidates. Like them, she was cleaned up and ready as can be, but the robes draped on her awkward frame even more awkwardly and she hadn't had time to braid her hair, so it showered her shoulders in beautiful waves. She felt a bit naked without her braids, but it wouldn't make much of a difference, would it?
She was extremely worried about Amila, especially after the girl had retreated and looked very upset. But she didn't move. There were three babies walking about and she didn't want to upset them, too. Poor things must be so confused! Well, soon they would have a guiding hand in the world.
Ellain couldn't help but smile, too. They were so adorable. And the sight of Riagan Impressing the little blue made her eyes swell with joyful tears. They both looked so happy! A cause for celebration, indeed.
The sight of the boy crossing the sands to the beautiful blue caused Ichta to sigh with relief. "Oh good. That's wonderful," she said, passing a look to Goran and Nadry again, just beaming. One down, 21 to go. But they were off to a good start.
At least, as Ichta looked back to the other eggs and the other two dragonets roaming the candidates looking for theirs, she hoped they were. Go ahead. Find them. You can do it.
Hazel eyes locked on the goings-on below, Lucayr replied, “I’ve a young brother at home, but no family here today.” He grinned, glancing back at Alusia. “I do see some suspiciously lovely children on the sands, though – I have hopes to see Cahlusi and Alumet Impress today.”
He noticed the dark blue hatchling taking a seat, swinging his head as he searched for his intended. A few moments later, he shook his fist in victory as the first Impression was made.
--------
Emori suddenly paled. She fanned herself, appearing uncomfortable in the heat of the hatching grounds. Perhaps her dress was a bit too heavy, after all.
Whatever is the matter? What? What is it? Inannath sputtered.
Nothing. It’s nothing. “No, I have no one here today,” she answered Alusia. “I’ll be cheering for yours, though.”
The Fool was surprised when her sister broke shell, and almost jumped back in alarm. Thankfully, her green sister seemed to be all right, and in one piece. Giving a happy warble, the green nuzzled the Wheel of Fortune before sprinting along.
There was so much energy in the green, she didn't want to stop, or slow down.
In her joyous nature, she first ran up to The Sun Egg and started digging at its mound. That bored her in about two seconds, though it did mean the egg toppled sideways.
Then, the Fool rushed over to the Candidates. She immediately made a bee-line to Goran, Ichta, and Nadry, her wings spread, but her eyes bright blue. Was her person here among this group? She kicked up sand and even took a leap at Goran. This one looked big and strong and tough... but maybe not so fun.
Though her wings and tail whipped around her, she veered out of the way, and bolted right past Mallan and Amila and Timor, trumpeting as she passed.
Where was hers?
When she got to Rhey the green gave a shriek that was almost a laugh and attempted to pounce right on the boy and would do so, if he didn't otherwise get out of her way. Who was this? Who was he? Was she hers? . . . . Nah. With an impish whip of her tail, she turned around, and bounded right over to The Devil Egg instead. She did bowl over any slow moving Candidates in her excitement, but like Amila, didn't seem to think twice about it or the damage her baby claws could do.
Now this looked like fun. Once again, the green resumed her happy digging, oblivious to the whirlwind in her wake.
Had she been a little startled by the sudden voice in her head, waking them all up? Why yes, she was. Avalinia quite literally jumped right off her cot, blinking rapidly and prepared to get scolded or told the pots she was cleaning weren't scrubbed enough.... except there were no pots. And she was staring at a flurry of movement from other candidates.
Oh. Right. Dream forgotten just as swiftly, what that voice in her head actually said began to register. A new type of unease mixed with excitement started to settle in her stomach as she quickly went about the motions of proper dress attire and slipped out of the barracks with the other candidates. Her heart pounded and there was a rare smile lighting up her face. She even momentarily forgot her wariness of the sands, bowing respectfully to the dragon parents before taking her place among the candidates.
And then there were dragons hatching. Shards, but it was one thing to hear what to expect. Quite another to actually see it in person. Avalinia felt her breath catch. It was such a strange and exhilarating feeling watching the hatchlings emerge. At least until one of them mauled a girl in its excitement.
OhFaranth. Avalinia couldn't help the step backwards she took, catching the movement and working to steel herself for whatever happened here today. She had to be brave!
As she watched the two greens with a little more care, she spotted one of the male candidates run up to the blue hatchling. Surprised, and a little curious, she observed the two. Was... that an Impression? Is that how it usually happened?!
Hearing the weyrlingmaster's voice, Riagan nodded, taking a step back from the blue. Hungry? he asked with a big smile, though he still felt like he was barely breathing. He glanced over to the right, where the weyrling master and several other were waiting near an adjoining cavern.
Hungry, yes. Basanuth confirmed.
Let's go then! Riagan encouraged him, starting to move off to the side, making sure the blue was trailing behind him and could keep up.
The blue stood following him off the sands, moved him with the same calm grace he had shown during the hatching, picking his way through candidates carefully without harming one (he may have accidentally bumped someone with one long wing, but it wasn't his fault they were so big and, well, in the way), until they made it to the edge of the cavern.
"Sir." Riagan said to V'mel, awkwardly saluting, though he could barely tear his eyes away from Basanuth, still not fully at grips with what was happening. He beamed at the compliment. And Basanuth too, sitting calmly, seemed to turn his head in an appreciative manner. Yes, he was strong. Thank you for noticing. Eyes still wide, he looked towards the buckets of meat, waiting for instructions. He knew he had to feed him, but he assumed V'mel would give him the details.
Farensil winced as the dragon rend a hole across the girl's shoulder, but smiled as she had plenty of help from the other candidates. She would get the help she needed, surely. She let her eyes roam over the dragonets to assess their attention; The fool was still running around in active little circles, and the Wheel she'd been pushing had split and was now hunting for her own amongst the boys. The Judgement's blue result was wandering around forlornly, heading towards the boys curiously.
And now the fool was- Faren spun out of the Fool's way, as one of the slower-movers, she'd been in the way of its path to the devil, and couldn't help grinning at the green. At least until the green's tail swept her sideways again. She didn't wind up on her rump again, but made a note to keep better track of the extra limbs.
Ichta inhaled sharply as the green came running towards their trio, already prepared to raise her arms to cover her face if needed - even if Goran would have likely taken the brunt of the damage in any such meeting. It seemed, however, the little dragon changed her mind and continued to run about, looking for hers. It was only when the green returned to the eggs that she released the breath and allowed her arms to drop to her sides again. Was Goran okay? She looked to him to make sure after the green had launched at him.
This is fine. Everything is fine. she repeated to herself, fidgeting with her fingers as she picked at the skin around her nails. Would The Fool's happy ways do the same with the red egg as it had with the blue one?
