(RP response not required for Wingsecond rolls.)

Quote:
If a Wingsecond, you're always looking out for your fellow wingmates, and trying hard to lead and inspire. Though you take cues from your Wingleader, you're a force onto yourself. This time, you make an inspired call, and wind up helping them get a burst of renewed confidence. Quote your Wingriders and they all immediately Gain +5 HP in a moment of renewed energy and inspiration. You can do this!

[firestone toss for r'gal and yihoth!]

Quote:
2-5. Ah, success just seems to come naturally this firestone run! In fact, you find this easy as pie. Your dragon successfully flies just under the dragon pair, and you're able to easily toss up the stone. There's no trouble here, nope! Nothing but smooth sailing....

One of the Browns had flagged them down, and E'dao had scrambled into action. Even somewhat retired as they might have been, going on a firestone run was certainly within their abilities, and Uerath wouldn't have dreamed of letting someone else take this one. He wanted to get back into the air as much as any fighting dragon, and now seemed as good a time as any--when they got close enough to pick out the R'gal and the behemoth that was Yihoth, E'dao took aim, already trying to figure out the best way to throw the bag. The wind had definitely been a problem, and he'd thought ahead enough to bring a spare, but he'd prefer not to have to use it--it seemed like he wouldn't have to, either. They got into position with ease, and the bag made a perfect arc up toward R'gal's waiting grasp.
Giving a quick salute, E'dao and Uerath turned back to the weyr, feeling rather accomplished.

Your dragon is effortlessly flaming Thread. Honestly, they almost seem to make it look easy. Both you and your dragon start to feel more confident, and even start to get a bit cocky. Low Altitude Wing was always the easiest wing to fly. Unfortunately for you...a gust of wind sends you out of formation, and you know your Wingleader (or their Seconds) just saw.

With a fresh bag of firestone in hand, R'gal and Yihoth were eager to get back to work. They went through the motions with ease, turning thread to ash at every opportunity. Just as R'gal was starting to get a little overconfident, though, the wind stirred up again, batting Yihoth out of formation once more in the middle of a turn--cursing quietly, they did what they could to compensate, circling back around to rejoin their wingmates.

It was all going well. There were injuries, but that came with fighting Thread. Nothing tragic. Nothing life-altering. Nothing unexpected.

No sooner had the thought passed through G'rey's mind than there was a wave of unbearable grief from Karhath that sent both him and dragon alike staggering for a moment in the skies. His dragon was keening, and in only moments he heard the entire wing joining the cry. One of their own had been lost. The dragons had all sensed it, and the overwhelming wave of raw grief had significantly thrown the both of them off balance.

Thankfully, it was not enough to injure them in that moment. Karhath blinked Between, reappearing and flaming down a sliver of Thread they were perfectly positioned to catch.

Doin' fine. Think we'll make it pretty okay. It ain't too bad down h--

The feeling hits Yihoth out of nowhere before he can continue, though--loss. Death. Somebody--someone won't be coming back to the weyr with them, and the keen tore its way out of his throat before he had any chance to stop it. He wouldn't--their grief was shared, and other dragons joined in tp form a ghastly chorus.
Who-- Who was it? What happened?
Thella and Lireloth... Yihoth's eyes whirled in shades of gray even as he prepared to ignite another cluster of thread. I-- I don't know. But it's... They're Trespassers. Above us.
You think it's getting bad up there, maybe...?
I...hope not. I really do.

Your dragon is starting to feel tired. This particular fight is wearing them down. A strong gust of winds tries to throw them out of their position. Roll a D4 to see what happens!

Grief was a heavy thing, and G'rey could feel it starting to weigh on Karhath. There was a sluggishness to his movements that hadn't been there before, and was downright unusual when typically His moved nimbly. But Karhath had always bee such a sweet dragon, and the thought of the loss of one of theirs undoubtedly made his loving hearts ache. Even if death to fight Thread was an honorable sacrifice to be lauded, that made the loss itself no easier.

The moment the wind kicked up, G'rey knew what was coming. He braced himself as Karhath was sent careening out of formation, still keening as the wind tossed him about like he was still an inexperience Weyrling just learning to fly. There were warnings trumpeted to them interspersed with the conintued keening grief of the dragons in the air, but it did little good to help them in that moment.

It was only when the gust finally died down that Karhath was able to right himself and make his way back into formation, and G'rey was infinitely grateful they hadn't been caught by Thread in that moment of helplessness.

Whoops! Your dragon is blown completely out of formation, and is too tired to stop it. Fellow wingriders notice, and trumpet warning, though it's unclear if your Wingleader has noticed or not. Either way, your dragon is just spent. Fatigue Effect For the next 3 rolled turns your dragon will suffer from Fatigue Effect. Any XP earned during those turns is negated. On the plus side, any negative status effect (i.e. additional Fatigue Effect or Bitten Tongue) is also negated, since your dragon is too tired to care. The only exception is if you get a status that cures Fatigue or your Wingleader/Wingsecond rolls a status cancelling roll.)

One of their wingmates had been blown off course in much the same way as they had earlier--Yihoth craned his neck to catch sight of G'rey and Karhath behind them, still doing their best to recover following a sudden massive gust of wind. R'gal sent Yihoth a wave of comfort, trying to bolster his dragon enough to keep going just a little further--Yihoth responded by bearing down on his duty, trumpeting his encouragement to his wingmates despite the sadness in his hearts. They couldn't lose anyone else--one pair was too many as it was.
Come on, Karhath--! Can't stay down there forever. There's still a note of melancholy in his voice that he can't quite shake, but Yihoth knows he has to focus on the here and now. We'll get back to the wing together. You've got this.

From a blue or a green, Karhath might have written off the words as empty flattery. But from another brown - an equal in all, with Turns more experience that lent weight to his words... It gave Karhath the boost he needed. His hearts still ached, but the worst of the weight of his grief was shaken off. He would not allow himself to become another casualty. Not today.

Thank you, Yihoth! I needed that.

He sent a wave of warmth and gratitude to the other brown in response, retaking his position in the wing and turning to receive more firestone from G'rey. And just when he thought he was back on his game, he managed to bite his tongue while chewing, yelping in surprised pain.

Although his own heart was heavy, it was enough to make G'rey smile just a bit. Karhath would be pouting for that for ages later.

The aching keen that tears through Heimdath takes Y’qua by surprise, as the pit of loss runs deep through their bond -- a cavernous loss for another wingrider of High Reaches. Another dragon, another rider lost amongst them.

’Who was it?’

Lireloth, and his Thella. Up in Trespassers, I believe. Heimdath ached, her eyes a soft, pale grey of pain as she seared away a clump of thread -- early, so very early, but both were minorly pleased when she was still able to reach it from so far off. They would continue to fight, especially for those who would never make it home with them all.

They were back on their game, G'rey was sure. Although the loss of their own still echoed in the skies and their hearts, and he was certain none of them were truly focused with it hanging over them. But for the moment, Karhath seemed to be moving at least close to his typical speeds and reaction time. He flamed down any Thread that came within reach, and managed to catch a small strand right in front of them.

Right as the wind picked up again.

The hot ash was blown backwards, and Karhath hissed in pain as it caught his forehead and head knobs, thankfully missing his delicate eyes. G'rey brought up an arm to shield his face, even though he wore protection as any rider should. It was pure reflex, and he shook the ash from the sleeve of his riding leathers.

You alright?

I am beginning to loathe this wind.
