Lucian leaned in close to Joey's neck to inhale his scent. He smiled and rolled off of Joey. "Yes...Lucian is a dragon. Lucian also liked when your mo..." he trailed off into a mummble. "Lucian want's more food..." he looked back at Joey and smiled genuine at him.
(((Sorry I haven't been on lately. Computer crashed and had to ship it off to get fixed. Now I am using my sisters which sucks. T^T So I won't be on for much longer.)))

Disclaimer: All this stuff about krakens, mermaids, et cetera, I am completely making up. I don't know if this is true at all.))
Kra's rumbled laughter boomed out again. "A very long time, as you humans would think, I am sure. I have watched civilizations rise and fall, Joshua. As I said, I grow old for even a kraken."
Katalina intervened. Stripped of all the fancy talk, what he means is that he's pretty close to the full lifespan of a kraken. And you're...what, five thousand years old? she asked Kra.
"Six," said Kra. "Six thousand, seven hundred and nineteen. An average kraken living in a healthy environment, Joshua, lives for five to seven thousand years. When these eggs hatch and the children inside have grown to their full size and are mature, they will be perhaps five hundred to a thousand years old." He looked down at the boulder. "We grow slowly, but then we are meant to have a great deal of time."
His enormous eyes flicked to Katalina. "Whereas mermaids grow quickly, and spend the rest of their immortal lives wishing they had had more time to be children."
Katalina grinned, knowing he was teasing her. We grow fast, sure, she retorted. But we only live forever if we don't get into accidents.

Joey sighed when Lucian rolled off of him. He sat up and looked at Lucian. His eyes looked questioningly at Lucian. "My...mo...what?" He sighed, curiosity lost. "Oh, never mind. And I don't have any food left, sorry." He looked around. "Huh, seems like Joshua and Katalina left." He was feeling bored, so he glanced at Lucian, his curiosity growing. He didn't want to ask, but...he wanted to know...

Lucian stared back at Joey, wondering why he was being stared at with curiosity. He tilted his head to the side, "Huh?" He smiled at Joey and poked his belly. "What does Joey want?"

He shook his head at Lucian and looked away. He stared at the ocean, putting the question away until later. He stared out at the ocean, his mind drifting with the currents. His thoughts drifted, his mind open, though he didn't realize it. He pulled his knees up and rested his arms on them.

 Joshua gave a low whistle. That was a long time. Compared with these two, he felt insignificant in the world. If he was extremely lucky, he would live for hundred years. But that was it really, nothing compared to even the eggs which Kra protected. Now, the only question left on his mind, was about mermaids rather than krakens. "Thank you Kra, for answering my questions." He turned to Katalina. "Are you really immortal? Besides the accidents thing?" Joshua had heard the odd legend that claimed this about mermaid, but most only said a really long life-span.

Katalina nodded. In most cases, yes, she said. Mermaids are supposed to be immortal, but it's a very rare mermaid who actually gets to take advantage of that. The only thing we don't die from is old age. Accidents, wars, illness...all that can kill us as easily as it does humans.
She asked, Do you have anything else that Kra can tell us, or shall we meet others? With a grin at Kra, she added, We're doing the quick tour today. I promise I'll come back for a longer visit sometime soon.

Joshua nodded and thanked Kra once again. "I'm ready to move on." He could barely contain the excitement in his voice. There were so many fascinating creatures in the sea. The best ones could talk to him, tell him what he wanted to know. "Where are we heading next?" Joshua's amber eyes sparkled.

Katalina waved goodbye to Kra, who resettled himself in his hole. Then she shifted so that she swam alongside Joshua as she considered and rejected possibilities. He wasn't yet ready to meet some of the folk she thought of, but...well, yes. She would do, thought Katalina. She would do nicely.
"We're going to meet Lorelei next, I think," she told him, using her regular voice now that they were on the surface. "That means we'll be going around some rapids. Watch yourself. Those rocks hurt."
And she started off in a different direction.

"I'll be careful." Joshua promised. He swam next to Katalina, following her lead. "So does Lorelei live near the rapids? Or do we just have to pass by them?" He wanted to see if maybe he could figure out what Lorelei was before hand. Then maybe he wouldn't say something stupid right away. Not all sea creatures were bound to be as easygoing as Kra was.

"Not many people consider Lorelei to be a sea creature," replied Katalina as she swam on. "Mostly when they see her, she's on the rocks. But she actually lives just behind the rapids."
She knew Joshua was fishing for clues and was amused. It would be fun, she thought, to see if he could figure out who Lori was before he met her. Probably he would, just from that, seeing as he seemed to have read every legend about the sea ever written.

"Not a sea creature and on the rocks...." Joshua mused over his clue. "Behind the rapids...." Mentally, he ran a check against what legends he knew. "The rapids." He repeated. Somehow, he was sure that was vital clue. Joshua continued to think as he swam. "She wouldn't happen to like singing would she? Luring sailors with song?" He smiled at Katalina. "Is she a siren? Or maybe a harpy?" He wasn't so sure about the harpy, but it was a vague possibilities.

Lucian sat beside Joey and put his arm on his shoulder. The boy sometimes seemed lost and confused. He would get the same look in his eyes as he would. Staring off into the distance as he thought about his past. Lucian leaned over and nuzzled his neck. "What is wrong with Joey?"

"Nope," said Katalina casually. "Sirens come later. Lori's a little more special than that." Flopping over and letting the first hints of rapids carry her, she continued, "Some might even go so far as to say very special. I'm not sure if she sings or not - she's never mentioned it, and I've never asked." With a slight grin, she added, "Come on, Joshua. I've already all but told you what she is. You can do it."
"Or perhaps I can," a smooth voice said from the rocks. Katalina righted herself and smiled. Within a cavern, just above the water level, a woman sat. She looked every inch an ordinary woman, except for her astounding beauty - and the fact that she was semitransparent.
"Lori," Katalina greeted, turning to her. "Joshua, this legend may be a little out of your range. Meet Lorelei - the Lorelei."

It took a couple seconds for Lucian's words to register in Joey's brain. He turned his head and looked at Lucian. "Huh? Oh, nothing. I just like to stare off at the sea and let my mind drift. It is relaxing to me. I think about nothing, and yet my mind goes over everything." He sighed, leaning away from Lucian, feeling a bit awkward from him being so close.
