Joey's eyebrows raised as she spoke. "Wow, you came far. I knew you weren't from around here, but to that extent? You said you followed humans, correct? Why did you leave your home to follow them?" He was becoming increasingly curious about Aoife.

A blush broke out acrossed her cheeks. "I-I wanted to learn more of humans."

He grinned when she blushed. "Ok, well, you have now met one. What would you like to know?" His feet lifted off the ground and he floated belly up in the water.

Aoife watched, looking at his legs. "Are you boy or girl?" She was very serious.

Katalina led him farther down the side river. The sheer cliffs that had marked Lorelei's home grew even more forbidding over them now, until at last they were moving through near-complete darkness.

Ahead, there was a faint blue light. Katalina turned back to smile at Joshua, unsure if he could see her. Okay, we're almost there, she thought to him, not wanting to scare them away before she and Joshua reached them.

He blushed a bit. "I'm a boy. I take it that you are a girl." He said it as a statement of fact, not a question.

Aoife looked down at herself, almost as if she was checking. "Yes." She then looked up and gave a small smile. "Who is Joshua? You mentioned name earlier."

Joshua watched in wonder as the darkness grew more complete. He stared at the blue light ahead of them. When Katalina spoke to him with her mind, he almost jumped out of his skin. He'd been concentrating on the light, wondering what caused it. 'Is the next one shy?' He asked. It was the only reason he could think of for her to use thoughts.

They're scared, Katalina replied inscrutably. As well they should be.

Just when it seemed that the passage they swept through was too small to possibly go any farther, it widened out into a kind of pool. Katalina stopped talking to Joshua long enough to say, in a soft voice, "It's me. I brought a friend."

It seemed almost as though she was talking to the water.

"He is a human, like me. He is kind and is very interested in the sea and all of it's creatures, like you, for instance. You would like him." Joe smiled and stood.

"Oh." Aoife looked pursed her lips considering. "I like all humans." She summed her thoughts up simply.

Joshua tread water as he looked around. Who was she talking to? It didn't look like there was anyone here. But he had learned that the sea kept it's secrets well. So, Joshua waited patiently, his eyes never still. He kept watch, hoping to see them as soon as they appeared. 'Whoever they are. Whatever they are.' He thought to himself.

He looked at her, then said, "You had better be careful with that kind of liking. Not all humans are as kind as us and some may bring you harm. It is better off to be cautious around humans until you are absolutely certain that they won't harm you." He shrugged.

"It's okay," Katalina cooed soothingly. "He's a friend. Friend. Come on out."

Slowly, the water began to ripple. One after another, three tiny heads popped out of the pool. The small, blue, scaly creatures examined Joshua narrowly, then turned and chittered at each other for a few seconds before turning back to study him again.

Katalina smiled at Joshua. "Undines," she told him. "Or nymphs, if you prefer."

As though her words had been a signal, all three nymphs promptly disappeared again, only to come up once more - and not alone. Katalina and Joshua were surrounded by at least thirty tiny, blue-scaled creatures, all chittering at each other or at the two of them.

"This is an undine village," said Katalina. "There aren't many left."

Aoife looked confused. She'd never interacted with even many of her own kind, so she was pretty ignorant of society and beings as a whole, but she took him for his word. "Okay." She waded a little further in, she stopped once she could sit, the highest waves hitting her neck but most staying just below her shoulders. She noted there weren't any people around, so she was willing to come this much in.
