Aoife could tell and released the subject. "You had great... affection for your mother... She sounds wise."

Joey closed her eyes. "Indeed, she was very wise and sensible..." He kept the pain in his eyes, which, thankfully were closed.

Aoife felt unsure of how to comfort, so she let the waves of the ocean fill the silence. "I am sorry." She said looking away, tracing symbols onto the surface of the water even as the waves carried them away.

Joey sighed and opened his eyes, the pain still evident. "Its ok. You did nothing wrong. There is no need to apologize. My past is my past."

"It is hard to understand. I never had mother. Only me." She looked at him. "I try to understand and I feel sad." She frowned knowing her words were not conveying what she felt.

Joey sighed. "I know. You stared off by yourself, right? I had somebody when I started off. I may be alone now, but I had someone when I was younger. I suggest not trying to understand...It will only lead to more hurt..." He shrugged and looked back at the sky.

"Yeah! Mamamama..." Nellie began eagerly, to be cut off by a smoother, softer voice. "Nellitia, that is quite enough." The elder undine came closer, observing him carefully. "I am indeed Nellitia's mother. I apologize for her manners. She is...young." She inclined her head gracefully. "My name is Aishtarte," she added politely.
Nellie, bored with the conversation, was now inspecting Joshua's scuba gear with evident fascination. "Whazzis?" she demanded, tugging on his mask. "Shinyglitterglitter on eyes, right? Whassit do?" If Nellie was any indication, it was clear that despite their reputation, nymphs weren't born shy.
Katalina watched the little drama unfolding for a few seconds more before turning away to socialize with a few of the other undines. Due to the stress of the journey, she rarely came to visit them, and there was a lot to catch up on.

Joshua smiled at the older undine. "It's nice to meet you Aishtarte. Thank you for allowing me to be here." Nellie's tugging demanded Joshua's attention return to her. He laughed as he heard her question. "It's called a mask." He told the young nymph. "It lets me see underwater. I'm not build for living in water like you so I have special stuff to help me."

Aishtarte receded slightly, watching her daughter's play for attention. Once the elder nymph was no longer directly in her line of vision, Nellie's barely-there manners once again vanished completely. "There more...Whatwhatwhat? No water?" she demanded, looking horrified. "Live where? Wherewhere?"
Katalina glanced over her shoulder at Joshua, laughing quietly to herself. Good luck explaining land to her, ace, she told him.

Joey sighed. The sun was setting and painting the sky multiple colors as well as the sea. It was picture perfect. Joey righted himself and put his hand on Aoife. "Look at the sunset. It is one of the most beautiful things to ever witness, yet we take advantage of it until we realize how important it is to see the sunset." He turned and watched it, his hand still on her shoulder.

Aoife looked up. "It is pretty. You don't feel so lonely loking at it." She wrinkled her brow, at the lack of expression in her words again.

Joey nodded and removed his hand. He thought for a second, then said quietly, "I...I think that...I will stay here and take up on my friend's offer for a place to stay." He turned and looked at her. "Truthfully, this is the most fun I've had in years. I...Thanks..." He turned and watched the sunset again.

Joey nodded. "I hope so...I hope so..." He watched the sun paint the sky and sea brilliant colors, a testimony the the ending day.
