Joey was curious. "Like what? Based on what you said, being in the water is boring and repetitive." He smiled in response.

She smiled. "The..." She fumbled looking for the words. She let her body float up. "Lightness?" She asked for comfirmation of the right word.

Joey nodded. "Yea, I understand what you mean. On land, if you fall, your face smacks into the ground, hard, unless you catch yourself. In the water, you don't really fall. Your body just floats. Like a lack of gravity." He looked at her tail and realized how white it was.

She spread her arms out, smiling. "I've never 'fall' before." She let her hair fall into the water and seemingly dance in the waves.

Joey raised his hand, running his hand through her hair. He didn't mean to, but he couldn't resist. He pulled his hand away and blushed a bit. "Sorry..."

SilentShadowDreamer Aishtarte receded slightly, watching her daughter's play for attention. Once the elder nymph was no longer directly in her line of vision, Nellie's barely-there manners once again vanished completely. "There more...Whatwhatwhat? No water?" she demanded, looking horrified. "Live where? Wherewhere?"Katalina glanced over her shoulder at Joshua, laughing quietly to herself. Good luck explaining land to her, ace, she told him. Joshua cast a glance at Katalina. 'Thanks for the vote of confidence.' He told her sarcastically, before turning back to the little nymph. "Let's see....How to explain land....." He contemplated how to try and explain it to Nellie. After a moment of her impatient bouncing, he had an idea. Joshua made his way to the wall of the cave. He shifted so that he held Nellie in one arm, leaving his other arm free. Using his free hand, Joshua patted the rock of the wall. "See this Nellie? This rock? Land is lots of rocks like this all put together. Humans," He took his hand off the wall and placed it on his chest. "We live on the rocks. Plants grow on the rocks and water forms in the cracks between them. Lots of animals live there as well." Joshua hoped the explanation helped at least a little bit. It was the best way he could come up with to explain it. He had the sense of trying to explain color to a blind man.

Aoife smiled unabashed. "It's okay." Then after a pause she began hesitantly, "Can I touch your's?" She really hadn't been able to get this close to a person before, so she was using the chance.

You're welcome, Katalina replied brightly.
Nellie reached out and touched the rocks. "What're animimals?" she asked. "How...how do you live?"
Katalina, unable to choke back her laughter, came back to Joshua and Nellie. Nellie, doll, they're not quite like us, she explained. They breathe some silly thing called 'air'. See these things?, she continued, grabbing Joshua's ankle. They use these to get around, instead of fins. Those are humans, and animals. Their animals are like whales and dolphins and sharks, only without fins.
Nellie frowned. "What're plants?" she continued right along. "Howcome we don't have plants?"
We do, Katalina assured her. Just not in this cave. I'll bring some to show you next time I visit.
Nellie considered for a moment, then nodded. "Kay." Blinking up at Joshua, she asked, "D'you wanna know something now? I can tell you lots, too!"

Joey nodded. "Ok." He lowered his head a bit, his hair just coming over his eyebrows. It was still somewhat damp, but was growing increasingly dry out of the water.

She reached up, using the water to raise her just a little further. She combed her hands through it. "It's soft." She said in amazement.

Joshua nodded as Katalina explained things to the little nymph. He blinked as Nellie's flow of questions suddenly stopped. "Me?" He asked, before laughing. He'd gotten so wrapped up in answering her questions that he'd forgotten all about his own. "Oh, Nellie. There's so much I want to know. So, so very much." He shook his head, thinking of where to start. "Do you all live in groups like this? Or are there loners as well? What would you call a group like this?"

Nellie tried to wrap her mind around the questions. "Lon-ers?" she asked carefully.
Katalina chuckled. Joshua, you have to remember you're dealing with the nymph equivalent of a...a toddling, I think you call them? A toddlet? Anyway, use simple words. Loners are merfolk like me, Nellie, she explained. The ones without a family.
"Ohhhh," said Nellie, understanding. "Nonono, there's no lon-ers. We gotta be in biiiig groups, all the time, or we could get eated. We're not big like Sorry or hyoomins." She frowned at his next question. "Mamamama? What're we called?"
Aishtarte's voice drifted to them, as though carried on the wind. "Our groups are called clans, darling."
"There," said Nellie happily. "Ky-lans."

"Mmhmm." He had let his hair grow after his last encounter at the barber shop. He sighed and straightened his head when she finished running her hand through his hair.

Joey laughed. "It is as simple as simple gets, really." He looked back. The sun was at the waterline, now. He sighed. Katalina and Joshua better get back soon before it gets dark.
