That's wasn't a virus, it wasn't a hack, that huge dialog you just saw was us telling you about the arrival of a new feature, Gaia Instant Messenger (GIM). We hope you're enjoying your newfound ability to send messages to people on Gaia in the blink of an eye, and we beg you to use this power for good!
Some things to note:
- we are going to slowly let users into GIM at first, just to make sure that all our internets tubes are wide enough. So if you try to log in and you get an error telling you to wait a bit, try again in half an hour -- we plan to have everybody able to access it by this afternoon.
- Please use this thread to report any of your feedback, good or bad. If you're reporting UI bugs or other such, be sure to give us your browser version and the platform that you're running on (Windows, Mac, Linux, or whatever), and screenshots if it helps show the problem.
You can post in this thread for feedback, both good and bad. We sincerely hope that you like this latest feature!
UPDATED 9:44am: Some questions that are showing up:
- you may be prompted to install Quicktime (or another audio program), depending on how your plugins are configured for your browser. You don't need these programs for anything other than the sounds. You can also turn the sounds off in the settings dialog.
- you shouldn't need to install anything, this is done entirely in the browser. We've heard that there are some addons that may cause problems, we're trying to get more information on this.
- You can choose to not be logged into GIM -- that will prevent you from receiving messages. Alternatively, you can use the settings (lower left button in the buddy list) to control who is allowed to send you messages.
- The Gaia Guild Bot will always be on your list -- it's a special NPC that will be responsible for sending messages between guild members.
