Talis waited patiently for the young man to take her in, noting where his gaze lingered but paying it no mind. For her part, she could say that it was odd to see someone - so many someones - with no obvious marks on them. They were practically nonexistent in the mines. At any rate, it was noted and dismissed, and she nodded approval when he accepted and applied the paste. There was more in the jar than she needed, and there was no point in hoarding it all to herself. When he'd finished, it went back into her sleeve with enough for another someone to use, or for reapplication if they were out for an especially long time. She had no idea how long Hatchings usually went on for.
"High Reaches," she answered, one corner of her lips quirking up into a tiny approximation of a smile as she elaborated, "For all of a week. You?" A week had been enough, for her at least, to adjust into a semblance of normalcy despite the magnitude of the transition. Not dwelling overmuch on the differences helped, enabling her to accept the change and get on with things. Rough as she might still look, despite some feelings and memories that would creep their way in in quiet moments, she was functional. She could handle this.
One of the brightly-colored eggs started to wobble, drawing her eyes away from her new acquaintance to fix on the purple shell. Would it break?

Kambri (W)
While it seemed that only yesterday Kambri had been standing among his fellow candidates, from both Western and High Reaches, it had been many moons since then. When the call had come for candidates in the Weyr to assemble he had needed to make a quick decision on what to do with his flit Little One as she wouldn't be able to accompany him on the journey to the gold who had clutched so far from home. Needless to say she was not happy to have been left behind, but at least she was being well attended to by one of the dragonriders who wasn't carrying items and people to the beach. He could only hope she wasn't a complete terror while he was gone.
In the meantime, Kambri stood once more in his robe in a semi-circle around the gold as she watched over her clutch. Some eggs began to wiggle and move, and his heart swelled with the possibility of impressing. It was surprising to see that so many were able to gather in such a short amount of time. In fact, he was lucky to be here at all. He was one of the last batches of candidates to arrive. The sun baked the candidates and dragonriders alike, but he was used to the heat and reveled in it. If only he didn't have to wear the robe. Kambri much preferred to go shirtless, and if it was acceptable he'd probably walk around naked. Alas, people did not like wandering naked bodies. With all the dragons running about Western it probably wasn't a good idea to have certain parts exposed. He shuddered at the thought. "It's going to happens soon. I can just feel it." Kambri thought to himself with a jittery feeling stealing over his body. While Kambri had been disheartened after the results of his last impression, he had found the time educational as he now found himself excited not only for the opportunity to be on the sands of a hatching, but being able to witness the moment other candidates impressed with their lifemates. Would his heart still ache if he didn't impress? Of course. Would it still be worth it to him if he could witness the joy the dragons brought to others? Definitely.

As the gathered Candidates began to chatter, Shar took stock of everyone that was here. She recognized quite a few other High Reaches Candidates and a good handful of new faces which she could only assume were those from Western. There were more than enough Standing today for each dragon to find Theirs easily which was incredibly important what with the return of Thread. Every dragon was a valuable asset to saving their world and each one needed to Impress to ensure the safety of everyone present and then some.
"Ah...movement," she said, glancing at Riz to see his reaction. She could remember her first Hatching, the excitement and worry and thrill even though she hadn't found Hers. There had been disappointment but she was young and there would be other clutches to Stand for. Patience was a virtue and she'd wait forever if that was what it took.
"It's a bit strange not to have a Touching," she admitted as a small egg closer to the front began to wriggle with intent. She sent out an encouraging thought to the clutch at large, wanting them to know that they had quite the audience waiting to meet them.
---
M'aze gave the offered hand a firm shake, still smiling pleasantly. He glanced over at the young lady and gave a little bow towards her, always thankful for those who dedicate their lives to patching up people like him after mishaps and accidents.
"A pleasure to meet the both of you. It's nice to see the two Weyrs meeting on neutral ground for once." He knew some of the High Reaches Candidates had gone over to the Western Weyr for the last clutch. This time both of the Weyrs were called out to for help to see that this clutch wasn't wasted and he was glad to share the sands with the other group of riders.
"Should be an egg-cellent hatching. Lots of surprises," he said, his tone completely unchanged from how he had been speaking before. Above him, Zeath gave a delighted trill and wagged his head at his fellow bronze. It was strange being the larger one for a change - normally he was the smallest of his color and even smaller than some of the browns he knew - but he had never been one for feeling superior or inferior simply because of his length.
It certainly is an egg-squisite location for a hatching. I didn't think this place would be all it was cracked up to be, but I'm quite impressed. Oh! It looks like someone's ready to get cracking!

Farellen was busy, helping the healers set up while trying not to over use his still healing arm, on pain of being banned from Standing if he didn't take care of it, he'd been told flat out by the healer in charge of his care when he was bed bound.
It wasn't until he was thrown forward by a heavy pat on the back, making his scars sting but knocking his arm on the edge of a table and biting back a hiss of pain that he knew K'gan was there. Blinking back tears that threatened to prickle, he turned, cradling his arm, wondering if he shouldn't borrow a sling for a while, he'd left his back at the weyr, "K'gan!" he said cheery enough, clearing his throat at the fact it squeaked a little. Damnit he was over the voice changes.
"Hatching Sands aren't in the full glare, i wouldn't know how hot a dragon's Nut Sack is there K'gan, i don't make it a habit to go around and check" he laughed, eyeing Singarth with a grin while his five fire lizards scolded K'gan before vanishing 'between' together, led by the blue. "huh, wonder where they've gone" he muttered. "Nah, i'm here helping the Healers, i'm not allowed to Stand yet" he added, lifting his now slightly throbbing arm up and pointing to the eye patch "least i can watch hey?"

Dorianus(High Reaches Weyr)
Listening to the other talk, Dorianus found he was glad that he wasn't from Western and hadn't had to deal with the sudden quick time change. Going between made quite a few many things easy, like hurrying to an impromptu hatching, but it had to make you feel strange going from morning to afternoon fairly quick.
The exclamation about movement made him turn his attention back towards the eggs once more. While the one who had moved stilled once more, another seemed to move and he couldn't help but raise an eyebrow some. "Seems as if they are playing a game with us." The twitching caused the candidates to hold their breath and wait, wanting to see the shell begin to crack and break open to reveal the being inside, but nothing happened. Those this egg seemed to move a bit more, it seemed to be more awake then the others.
"I do wonder how long they will keep us waiting." He wasn't impatient, but more worried about the heat. Being from High Reaches made it easier for him to withstand the cold more then the heat, though he would endure it, as he always did upon the hatching sands. Hopefully it wouldn't last too long, however...
A girl moving towards them made his grey eyes move in her direction, watching as she joined them. It got a questioning look, more because he was wondering why he was being chosen as a gathering spot, though it didn't look like this new girl knew the boy he was talking to. Of course, thinking of that Dorianus seemed to remember he didn't know the other boy's name, nor had he given his own. He let his eyes move back to him, holding out his hand. "Dorianus."
DaisyMilk Notices Esfir joining them.

—————Jacquol————— "Those frosty, stuck up wher-snouts? I mean, yeah, it's great the dragonets will get their pick, totally." She hadn't had a bad time with the High Reaches candidates before...but honestly, she hadn't spent much time with them either. They'd seemed overall quite formal, taking things far too seriously. It was only the fate of Pern and the direction of their entire life, right? So what was to worry about! Alright, alright, so they'd nearly single-handedly saved Pern upon thread's return, fine. They could stay. Didn't mean she was going to go trying to goad them into a joke or two though!
"Your ship, huh? Well! Now there's something we have in common! My big brother left home to...sail, and a bunch of us took after him. Went and impressed himself a dragon first, and all the attention made him take to the sea, but he's an alright sort. Back fighting the good fight now. And like little ducks in a row, some of us that had followed him onto those boats ended up coming back to shore too." That was one way to put it. Honestly, she'd snuck into Western to make a quick mark, maybe find a firelizard egg to nick. The timing had just gotten in her way, that gold rising, and the next thing she knew, well! Ambrin was worth his weight in marks, not that she'd ever tell him. His head was big enough as it was.
"I dunno. About the touching, I mean. The Weyrs seem to think it makes a difference. I know if I'd had an expectation and then not had it met, I'd be a bit miffed. Suppose at least a few will hatch out confused, looking for certain folks. It's a bit sad." Though if they did impress, she wondered if that might change the Weyrs' attitudes on the touching. Not that she'd minded touching Vimiath's eggs. It was fairly bizarre, but not bad. And she herself hadn't been mauled in the end, so that was something.
"Oh, look!" The sudden shifting of the one egg, indigo and yellow, was too intense to be missed. She grabbed Kiri's arm, pointing with open amusement. "There's mine, right there!" She joked, though no doubt plenty of those around her in the throng had similar opinions. Everyone wanted their partner, everyone felt that this would be theirs, their time, their egg.
—————Zelaya————— She glanced down at herself, as if to double check that, no, indeed, she was not in robes. It had been a bit strange not to go and join the rest of the candidates, but then, "I'm not...here as a candidate?" She offered quietly, as if the words might offend the eggs across the beach. It wasn't their fault that their mother had made some poor choices. And surely they would make some lucky candidates into very happy weyrlings—she hoped they hadn't all decided upon Fort children, as none were available. "But my chores are done, and with all the rest of the candidates here, and Gr'del here...It felt improper to wait alone in the empty barracks. And Z't—father, seemed to think it would be good to see it. I was not at the hatching at Western..."
In fact she'd never seen baby dragons upon the sands. Never seen them split shell, or the potential chaos, tragedy, and triumph that might follow. She'd heard ample tales of the horror of Western's clutch, seen the scars in her rankmates' skin. But she was still technically naive to a hatching itself. If she was going to do her father proud, best to remedy that before her real chance to stand came, back on High Reaches' much more sensible sands.
It dawned on the young woman then that she'd neglected to introduce her father. How terrible of her! She turned to the man, the faintest light of hope shining in her eyes that he would approve of this potential friend. It was, after all, the only one she'd begun to make so far. "Wingleader Z'tir, this is Sylfie, of Gold Hesperith," As if he wouldn't know already. "We've spent...a little time together. Sylfie, this is my father, Z'tir, of Bronze Sorath, Wingleader of Harbingers Wing, under Alpha Flight Leader and Weyrleader Second Y'mar, of Bronze Worenth." She listed the man's connections and rank from memory, a full and proper (if formal) introduction, as she felt befit his station. "Though, maybe you've already met...?" She glanced Sylfie's way, meeting her eyes just briefly in a gesture meant to shore up both of their nerves, and in the process entirely missing the movement of both eggs.
—————Oseathiol————— Watching the candidates mingle and orbit around each other like the planets around Rukbat was nearly as interesting as the dragons. So many! In so many colors! Osiathiol kept a careful eye on which dragons dropped off which children. Were candidates sorted to their rides in any sort of pattern? Were those expected more favorably to impress put on bronzes, or at least, if they came from High Reaches? Probably not, given the wide array of sorts even now hitting the beach, but it was worth wondering about. And see how the candidates swirled and mixed! There were few firm lines of division by weyr, and one or two of them had seemed quite keen to...well, almost hoard their peers. Many stood in twos or threes, but here and there a larger clump of hopeful youths had begun to form up. And more rarely, a lone person stood, slightly outside the bunches, looking either resolute or neglected, though to a one they all looked intense, grouped up or not.
He could certainly sympathize with those outside the growing groups. Socializing was...hard.
A surge in noise caught his keen harper ears, and the man perked up, hastily dragging curling bangs from his eyes to follow the suddenly unified gaze of the candidates...to a wobbling egg! "Oh!" He couldn't hide his own burst of excitement. Was it time? He was three steps forward, out of the protective shade, before he caught himself. It was so hot...and the egg had stilled. It did little to deflate him though, even as he scooted back again into the shade, quill flying to mark the first lines for a poem or a song he'd pen just for this clutch.
A bright little egg, Not too great or too small, Rolled forth from the sands 'twixt the gold mother's claws. The crowd all leaned forward, Calling out, standing tall, Was it first to split shell and to take up Pern's cause?
Tsunake @Alya, just that he noticed her antics, no real interaction.

Nimueh and brown Mharlith.
Nimueh indulged the comment with a light chuckle. "Maybe I just want to be seen with the person simply everyone is talking about." She countered with a dramatic wave of her hand. And another playful half smile "I have to admit it was fairly easy to pick up your name when I arrived but you shouldn't take that as a negative. That is what having a clutching gold is all about, weather you are in a weyr or more unusual settings. You are bringing new life into the world as well as changing the lives of candidates. Of course the pair of you are the focus. Besides when you get this many people together they have to find something to gossip about." She added wryly glancing at the mix of candidates and riders huddled together.
"You know I think you should be rather proud of yourself, you might have had help from Fort but It was an achievement in itself keeping your eggs safe isolated out here. And even when the worse happened and upset your plans you still managed to rally and get candidates here for your eggs. And all of them are so excited because of it, " She made a sweeping gesture at the babble of candidates.
"As for what people are saying. Sweetie, men don't impress to golds because most of them couldn't handle it. They think having bronze can be a challenge but they have no idea. And female green riders handle their broody partners much better. Don't let them get into your head. I'm not even sure I would hve the will to direct a gold. With no clear weyr, she is going to clutch where she likes."
"You could do anything, a gold would be lucky to have you. I just got to your first. Because you are mine" Mharlith cut in adoringly, because of course he had been listening in.
"You know I wouldn't have any other." Nimueh replied with a rush of affection that built between the two as they touched minds and souls.
As she finished she reached out and gently touched Pavari's arm giving it a gentle squeeze, hoping she had helped steady the gold rider. "Ah, looks like it s starting." she spoke suddenly as the rocking of a small egg near the front of the pack caused her to refocus her attention. "I best let you attend Susurinth. Let me know if either of you need anything"
Erastan
From what Eastan had understood from his lessons with the candidate masters and eves dropping on riders and hopeful class mates being with a dragon was like having another part of yourself, being bound body and soul, always having another who knew what you were thinking and feeling. Well, that all sounded lovely but as far as the young boy could see he already had that with his twin, why did he even need a dragon? Just glancing at her and following her line of sight he knew she had been on the same track as him. They had never needed words to communicate.
Vosin was plan B should everything go array. Though Erastan had never managed to trust the gold rider like his sister, as he saw to much self interest in her actions, that didn't matter. He still owed her and he had faith enough in her gold dragon.
Suddenly he felt his sister shift subtly beside him, a ripple of excitement ran through the crowd like a living wave, but then, all eyes were fixed on one of the smallest eggs, rocking and shiver so violently it looked ready to upend itself. "Green first. Erastan guessed, looking at the size of the egg. "....or white." he added as a after thought.
Roana
Roana waved once more to Nicara trying to wave away her worry, even though the closer she got to the eggs the more the red head felt her heart hammering in her chest. Which is why she did decide to seek familiar faces in the crowd of candidates. She wasn't scared, but last time having someone to talk to had helped calm her nerves.
It didn't take her long to track down Iathe again, her opinionated tones rang strong as expected. Weaving her way through the crowd she slipped up behind the high reaches candidate and tapped her shoulder. "Iathe, it's good to hear your dulcet tones again." she teased. "And well, a touching didn't seem to help us much last time." she pointed out. "In fact, considering how disastrously it ended we might have been better off skipping it all together so I am willing to give it a chance. And Selfish or not. I kinda admire a women that can make three whole weyrs jump at a word." She grinned and then scooped the poor Iathe into a surprise hug. "whatever the circumstances, good to see you again." Only after she had set Iathe down did Roana turn to the girls new companion.
"Hey, sorry to interrupt. " She offered a hand out to Marirae. "Just couldn't pass up the chance to say hello to my hatching time sister. My names Roana. I'm a western candidate." She would have said more but there was a sudden flurry of excited voices around her and like all others Roana found her eyes drawn to the wobbling egg. "Too late for second thoughts now, looks like we're starting."
K'gan and Blue Singarth
K'gan seemed oblivious to the damage he had done, or he didn't care and thought the boy could handle it. He grinned impishly. "Ugh, well Singarth sort of sat on me once, so trust me its hot and pretty unpleasant." He quickly gave his hand a wave to dismiss questions before they could come. "But that's a story for another time." Behind him Sigarth chuffed his disapproval or disagreement and shook his great head in a motion that might have signaled laughter.
"It was just a game, a good game. I'm not unpleasant "
K'gan answered his partner out loud for Farellen's benefit so at least he could hear one side of the mental conversation . "Sin. I love you, but trust me, that part of you isn't exactly a basket of roses." Singarth snorted his disagreement again and K'gan chuckled.
"Ahh well, don't let that get you down, there has been stands impressions before and that kid impressed in the healers area last time and he looked like he was justa bout ready to keel over." Tactful as ever K'gan. "So don't give up and look, here's your chance." he pointed over at the eggs as a few began to wobble and shudder, signs of life showing from inside.
