Aoife nodded in agreement and dove beneath the water. She swam up to the mermaid. "Uh... I am Aoife."

"I'll be careful." Joshua promised, not wanting to think of the consequences. That was how he made it through a lot of things. If he didn't think too hard about what he was doing, he wouldn't freak himself out. There'd been a few cases of over thinking things when he was younger. Joshua just found it easier to think less most of the time. He gestured towards the water around them. "So? Where are we going?"

Katalina grinned. "We're here," she replied, stretching out in the water. "Look up, my boy."
Tucked into a crevice at the top of the cliff was an enormous nest. It was easily big enough that three or four women of approximately Katalina's size could have fit in there, with room to spare.
Katalina tilted her head back and called out in her own language, and there was silence. For a moment. Then there was a soft rustle, a whisper, and brilliant gold exploded over them as a truly gigantic creature appeared at the top of the cliff. It had the body of an eagle, with the head, forepaws, and tail of a cat. Then a second one, slightly smaller and bronze instead of gold, looked out of the nest at them.
"Griffins," said Katalina, smiling at Joshua. "They might come down, or they might not, I don't know."
Her caution became unnecessary a few seconds later, when the gold griffin swept down towards them and perched on a large rock just above the water.

Aoife paused a moment forgetting that Sea fairies must not be very common. "I'm a Sea Fairy. I was..." looking for the words, "wondering why you are here?"

Joshua allowed himself one good look so he wouldn't be staring. He watched the golden come down and perch. 'I have to remember to get or do something for Katalina later. These are such amazing creatures.' He tucked the mental note away for later. Following the etiquette rules he'd been taught as a child, Joshua addressed the griffin. He gave a nod of his head, the closest thing he could do to a bow. "Hello. My name is Joshua Ritchen. It is a pleasure to meet you."
He didn't know if the griffin could speak or not. It was one of the things that the legends couldn't seem to agree on. That, and how much was cat as opposed to eagle. 'All of them agree though, on the fact that they are extremely smart and can be very dangerous. Especially with young.' He didn't dare glance away to look at the smaller bronze one. He didn't want to offend the gold griffin. 'If that one even is young. Could be a mate. They're also sticklers for manners.' Joshua was trying to recall if he'd read about the proper way to deal with griffins, besides just generally being polite.

The griffin inspected Joshua closely for several minutes, then looked at Katalina with its enormous coppery eyes. Katalina winced a couple of times, then murmured, "Please, lady, gently. No need to shout." She listened a few minutes more, then smiled and replied, "Yes. Yes. He can. He does. Yes. I can do that."
Turning to Joshua, she said, "She wants you to approach her - she doesn't want to have to use me as a translator for any longer than she has to. She says it's...inelegant? I think. Anyway, if you'll go to her, she'll find a way to speak to you."
The second griffin took flight as Katalina finished speaking, and came down to land beside the golden one. Once they stood side by side, it was clear that they were mates, not parent and child - they were too close in size. The gold one swiveled its head briefly to look at the bronze one, trilled at it, then returned its attention to Joshua and Katalina. It shifted very slightly and its tail flicked, as though gesturing to Joshua to come closer.

((Have you read a book called Wild Magic by Tamora Pierce? If you haven't, that is one heck of a fluke.))
Joshua watched Katalina as she conversed with the griffin. He nodded when she told him to go closer. As he moved closer to the griffins, he cast a quick glance at the bronze one, marveling at the color. 'At least I know which one is which.' He thought, referring to the gender of the griffins. "Is there something you wish me to do?" Joshua asked the golden griffin. He wondered how she would make it possible to speak.

((OOC: Oh my God, I think I love you. I've been quoting from those books for ages, waiting for someone to pick up on it. heart ))
The griffin stretched its head forward and examined him briefly. Then, ever so delicately, it unsheathed its claws and pricked his arm with the bare edges of them - just enough to draw blood.
Immediately, the thunder of the griffin's voice came through clearly. "I need nothing more in order to speak to you, Joshua Ritchen." She used his full name without seeming to think about it. "We have no names you would be able to pronounce, so for the sake of simplicity, you may call me Liwa. He," nodding at the bronze one, "will respond to Radin. Now. Sorry tells me you may have questions."
Although it was not phrased as a question, it was obviously an interrogation as to what those questions might be.

((I read your post and I was all "Wft? That's from Wild Magic!" I had to know if it was intentional or not. Those books are awesome!))
Joshua rubbed his arm where the griffin had drew blood. Thankfully, the cuts were small and already had stopped bleeding. "Thank you Liwa." He bowed his head again, ever conscious of his manners. "I goal is to learn everything I possibly can about this world. Sorry," It felt odd for him to address Katalina using that term. "Has been taking me around the sea to help with this goal. May I ask how old a griffin must be before it is considered mature?"

((OOC: It entirely was. I love Daine, she's awesome. 8D))
Katalina smiled at Joshua briefly - it was funny to hear him using her old nickname - before turning to speak to Radin in an undertone. She was sure Joshua and Liwa would get along fine, although it amused her that Liwa thought Joshua wouldn't be able to pronounce their names.
"You may," replied the griffin. Her voice was undeniably amused now. "And you may also dispense with the formality. It's only necessary for the original greeting, in most cases." She tilted her head, apparently thinking out Joshua's question. "It depends very much on the griffin. Some are considered mature younger than others. As a general rule, however, a griffin has matured once it has gained its adult feathers - which would be anywhere from sixty to eighty of your years."

((Daine rules. Wild magic has got to be the best of the magical gifts in any of the Pierce books.
Whoo! I got a new book for my birthday! A book called Monsterology. It's got some really good stuff on various creatures.))
Joshua gave a quiet sigh. He could be polite when he needed to, as he had just proved. Overall though, he found it irritating to be that polite. He liked to be able to speak his mind. "Thank you." He told Liwa. "Sixty to eighty years as an fledgling." He mused over this thought for a moment. "How long do griffins live on average then?" He wondered what kind of life span these magnificant creatures had.

((OOC: Daine is my favourite, closely followed by Kel. I wasn't the hugest fan of Alanna for some reason, but I still like her a lot.))
Liwa tilted her head. "A very long time," she replied mischieviously. "On average, though, a healthy, moderately intelligent griffin should live about as long as your average family line of humans. Two, three thousand years, perhaps? Long enough that in ancient times, humans revered us and spoke of us as 'immortal'."
She glanced up at her nest. "With any luck, my fledglings will live so long. But I fear this human pollution." She sighed softly. It was a strange sound to hear coming from such a creature.

((Dain is my favorite, but for me, Kel comes in third. She was in second until Alianna bumped her down. Alanna was okay, but the other characters often are better.))
Joshua mimicked the griffin's sigh. "Once again, humans are destroying and threatening." He followed the Liwa's eyes to the nest. "Do you have fledglings in the nest right now?" A thought occurred to him. Being half-eagle and half-cat, which did they take after when it came to their young? "Are griffins hatched or live born?"

"Hatched," replied Liwa briefly. She hesitated and examined him carefully, then said, "You are Sorry's friend. I will trust you. There are two fledglings in the nest now. Would you like to come see them?"
Katalina glanced over at Joshua, looking surprised. It soon blossomed into a smile, and her telepathic voice whispered, Say yes.
