I for one, think of emotions this way- Things you can't hold, like ideas, are abstract, correct? And correct me if I'm wrong, but abstract art is "fake", right? So emotions are "abstract", meaning that they aren't exactly "not real", but more of a figment of our mind, right? Like a thought- you cannot hold it, but you can THINK it, right? So it's a figment of the thoughts creators mind! So, emotions like "love", or "hate" is mearly a figment of our imaginations! So, love or hate isn't real! Some people call "feelings" love or hate, so, in theory, they're just naming things. So, love or hate are indeed not real! Maybe that's why people call me emo... emo

I am because I think. Life is no thought, life is real!
Emotions are scientifically only hormones stimulating receptors in your brain. Your way of thinking is influenced by emotions, the things you did inspired by a thought are grabable, so emotions are grabable. No difference between love or hate, both are able to create or destroy.
Anyways, emotions are connected with irrationality, but emotions make a man the perfect computer. Our emotions make us able to decide beyond binary thinking, computers only think in 1 and 0. Emotions also provide our instincts.
Abstract art is not fake, abstract art is speaking a language understood by only the artist and a handful of others.

Or they call you emo because they're ignorant that's the general case with people labeling others.
Emotions are as real as you believe them to be the ideal behind emotions is basically the same as the one behind souls they have no physical representations yet some people claim they are real while others disagree and say they are fancies or falsehoods I personally think emotions are real for if they are fake how could we feel them or know what they are of course you could use the argument of colors saying my red(anger) is your blue(sadness) but we both call it red(anger) we'll never know if they exist or if they're real you just have to believe in what you think is the right answer..

biologically speaking, emotions are caused by electrical impulses in the brain. emotions are real, no matter what their purpose is.

wow out of all the posts in this guild this is the first genuinely hard question and unfortunately i have no idea of i can't even begin to comprehend such a question because at first i thought it was like a chemical process but after thinking how could a chemical imbalance in the brain cause such feelings still a good question truly it makes me wonder

Scientifically speaking, yes emotions are caused and influenced by hormones and electrical signals between brain cells. Their PURPOSE is to provide a sort of guideline in the subconscious in order to promote the growth of the speices. This is why we feel lust towards members of the opposite sex we feel would make good mates, as well as the reason we feel guilt and sadness when we see members of our speices die. These have evolved as a way to increase the chances of our own survival and the survival as a communal species.
We often associate emotions with irrationality because they conflict with what our conscious minds and experience tell us, a battle between our conscious and subconscious, as well as a battle between our right and left hemispheres. What matters is that emotions tend to focus on one thing at a time, acting quickly based on limited information without taking the time to see the bigger picture. Our reasoning, however, often takes a great deal of time to work out the optimal course of action, during which case the moment of opportunity is lost. As our brains have evolved and enlarged, both sides have become more sophisticated, allowing us to analyze and plan courses of action quicker, while retaining emotional attachment and motivation. Of course, experience and learning also plays a large part.
Example: In combat, the fight-or-flight response is always active, and the adrenaline fuels our emotions to protect ourselves in a variety of ways. We can flee or fight. Now, let's look closer. If a punch is on the way, the flight response is always to run or to turn away. There is an instinctive defense mechanism leftover from prehistoric times that believes if they cannot see the threat, the threat cannot see them. This is, of course, not always the case. The punch will still connect, and possibly cause a knock-out or death. Any boxer will tell you that you need to face the punch head on, and actually advance towards it in order to take less damage. It will hurt, but it will keep you standing. Here we can see how the first instincts, with limited information, can work (no one needs to learn how to run from a fight) or not. With training and experience, however, we can still use our emotions to accomplish a greater task, advancing on our opponent to launch a counter-attack.

They make you have hobbies or fighting for a sake. They are really underestimated.
