Little Bo Black Sheep

User Image

Name: Little Bo Black Sheep
Personality:
History:

Taken from soq Halloween contest in which I won Bo

Bo had lived her whole life with the rest of her flock in a small, quaint village. It was a pleasant enough place, with a clear river to drink from, and plentiful fields of long juicy grass. The only problem was the occasional wolf attack, but the village had a smart system, and one cry of “Wolf!” from the shepherd and half the village came running. Thus the flock lived their days in relative peace, with kind shepherds to tend over them and many grew lazy and dull. Bo had never been quite like the other sheep. She was born with a quick mind and a temper to match. Though she loved her flock and her shepherd and so found little to be angry about. But the day the goats came changed everything.

The village had decided to buy a herd of goats, and why anyone would do that was beyond her. The goats were loud, obnoxious, stubborn, and not even very intelligent. They broke through fences, ran into the forest, and got themselves into all manner of trouble and then needed rescue. She disliked them immediately. Not to mention, because of this the village needed extra shepherds to watch them. The sheep, who had been with the village for as long as anyone could remember were tame and happy, and really felt no need to wander. Because they were not seen as needing as much watching, their shepherds were transferred to the goats, and the sheep got a new shepherd.

Meet the boy.

Cocky, lazy and stupid Bo had no idea where this pathetic excuse for a human had come from but it was obvious he was a good for nothing boy with no future. She would have left him for the wolves as a baby – but she was not his mother and thus he was still alive, having not quite managed to be killed by his own stupidity just yet. She was confident it was only a matter of time. Meanwhile of course, they were forced to put up with him as their watcher.

The first time the boy watched them she could tell he was bored, he was nothing like the other shepherds and instead spent his time either ignoring the flock and skipping rocks through the water, or chasing the flock around for his own entertainment. Twice even he cried wolf, a false alarm that not only roused the village each time but panicked the flock. She didn't understand how they had put someone so incompetent and self serving to watch over them. What at first was a frustrated acceptance soon grew to hatred of this boy. She talked to the flock leader about it, she wanted him replaced, he was horrid! But the elder chastised her, with the new herd of goats the village needed the shepherds to look after the goats who were more stubborn and prone to wandering. They would just have to put up with the boy until the goats were better trained and they could get their shepherd back.

But this didn't sit well with her, she wasn't content to just waste away being chased and bullied by some pigheaded two-legger. And so she hatched a plan...

the wolf had plagued the village for as long as anyone could remember, always sneaking in to attack the sheep and sometimes succeeding in making off with one or two as dinner. He was dangerous, their enemy. And yet it was for precisely this reason she knew it had to be him. She went to him, offering a trade of sorts, mutual benefit and all that. He would kill the boy, that much she needed to happen without a doubt. But she knew he would not agree to that, the humans would most certainly come after him. And so she also offered him access to the goats, an opening in the fence that only she knew. Something they both wanted, she reasoned. Him, an endless supply of dinner, and her to be rid of the horrid boy. The goats were a casualty, she disliked them certainly, but it wasn't the hatred she had for the boy. Still, she needed something to bargain with and they were her sacrifice, a necessary one. And with the goats out of the picture they would get their old shepherd back and things would return to the way they used to be.

On the day they had arranged she went for a walk, not wanting anyone to catch onto her mood. At the time they had agreed on, she heard a yell. "Wolf! Wolf!" Screamed the useless boy. Bo looked over to the village, and saw no one coming. The boy's futile cries were repeated again, and still, no one came. She smirked in satisfaction, he had been foolish, playing far too many games and now he would pay the price. Not wanting to miss the one chance she would have to witness his demise, she trotted over quickly.

The sight that greeted her eyes was not at all what she expected. The boy was alive and while, lying on the ground and staring at the wolf with fearful eyes. And instead of the goats, the dismembered bodies of her flock was strewn all about the grass, blood staining the once green fields. Shock overtook her, what was going on!

"This wasn't the deal!" She yelled, distraught. "What have you done!"

The wolf cackled. "Silly sheep, did you really expect me honour your deal? Goats are stringy and bad to eat, not to mention if I kill the human, the other villagers will most certainly hunt me until I am dead." He grinned. "All I wanted was your sheep friends. And you played them right into my hands."

What had started as numbness gave way to something else, a smoldering in her chest, a fire that gripped her with burning hands and wouldn't let go. She glanced at the boy. He had given up yelling, but was still just lying there, useless sack! He hadn't even tried to fight off the wolf, he had stood by and let her family die! She felt the rage build up and this time, unlike times before, she let it go.

Without another thought she grabbed the boy's staff, hooking the crook around the wolf and dragging him down with a strength she didn't know she possessed. Time and time again, her hooves crashed down on him, beating his body until it was prone and still beneath her bloodstained hooves, black body stained all over with his blood.

And then she turned on the boy.

She took him the same way she took the wolf, using his staff against him and trampling him until he was practically pulp. She stepped back, sides heaving as she gazed upon her rage. She draped the pelt of the wolf around herself, picking up the staff and glancing back one last time at the village she used to call home. No more.

The staff was her weapon, the pelt a warning to all, showing them in no uncertain terms that she would not be tricked, would not be crossed. And with these items, she set off, leaving far behind the only home she had ever known.
