It's not really "important" in Canada, and it's a day that is "observed" more than "celebrated." I don't think anyone throws an April Fool's Day party, and it sounds bizarre to hear it called a holiday.

EDIT: @Inmate, there are a lot of origin stories regarding April Fool's Day, some regarding changing from one calendar to another, one relating to Noah's Ark, and one about people celebrating spring too early. It's an extremely old concept, either way.
