A Question Concerning "Neon Genesis Evangelion"

I recently watched the entire "Neon Genesis Evangelion" series and there's something that's just been sitting in the back of my mind: Why did Gendo take Yui's surname when they were married? As far as I know it isn't common practice in Japan and it certainly isn't in any western culture that I know of, though I also don't think that it's frowned upon.

Is there supposed to be some meaning in that or am I just being ******** with by the writers again?

They're all warship names or nautical terms. Ikari means anchor (Yui's last name). As to why he preferred on over the other, who knows.

EDIT: never underestimate the power of google. Yui was of higher social status, so taking her name would be a way of keeping her social ties. As well, Gendou was quite the submissive so giving up everything to Yui is very easy to see.
