I read a book by an author named Faith Hunter, called Skinwalker. Its a fiction novel but has some research into the skinwalkers in it. It mentions them needing an object of the animal in question in order to change into it, by "finding the snake within in" or the dna.

i think its convenient that most peoples had similar shapeshifting type lore. i think theres more to it than wish fufillment stories. there must be some truth.
