I guess I should just say the reason on why my ref sheet is so damn long. My story has two storylines: first story is a modern romance, and second story takes place in 2004. So past history is somewhat important to me, because I can play off that for the now storyline. Height and weight, I completely understand how that's not very important, but I actually have plans on making this a manga/comic (once I start drawing again).

Like I said on the post with my ref sheet, take out and add whatever you find relevant to your characters development.

@ Lyvidian:

I did mention two or three times that I understood that not all writers worked like that or thought like that. And here's a few examples of what I meant when I said that name, age and purpose were really the only things necessary:

Name: Pepper Meadows
Age: 18
Purpose: Be the catalyst that allows Main Character to meet his father

Name: Dr. Vince Dunn
Age: 38
Purpose: Introduce the main plotline.

Name: Diana Elizabeth Margaret Tremblay
Age: 75
Purpose: Prevent the Main Character from achieving his objective.

I'll say it again: I understand that not all writers work this way. It is just my opinion that a character doesn't need page after page of information that probably won't have any purpose in regards to the story itself. In regards to creating a good character, here's how my personal outline usually looks:

Name: Luce Cristina Tremblay
Age: 21
Gender: Male
Role: Main Character
Purpose: To tell the story; personal purpose is to gain freedom from grandmother/abusive boyfriend
Obstacles: Personal demons (emotional, psychological), his grandmother, his ex-boyfriend
Additional Information:

Physical Features: Fair bone structure, dark red hair (usually in ringlet curls), slender build, freckles, dark blue eyes
Magical Ability: Natural affinity for botanical magic; medium power level

It depends on the level and maturity of a writer. If you've got something that works for you, great - it is just my experience that most people think that extensive character sheets are set in stone and shouldn't be changed or just used as personal references. I am not in any way saying that every single person who uses a character sheet will have immobile, sterile characters, and I apologize if that's how it came across.

@ Isacean: That's not how it came out at all. I understood what you were saying, and I know you said it doesn't work for everyone.

Was just giving my thoughts on your reply. =]

Lyvidian: I think the height and weight is really important, even for OFCs. I mean, if you say "he reached up to the top shelf" but later tell your readers that the character is short... that presents a problem.

Another thing I like to do when I'm stuck on character looks: TekTek. It may sound strange, but I often think of my best cultures and characters while I'm tektekking. I will give this warning: TekTek has a tendency to produce plot bunnies. Like, it probably gives me a plot bunny for every decent idea. And sometimes it just gives me duds. But when I get it right, it at least gives me a general reminder of what my character should sort of look like (eye color, hair color, typical garb).

Also sketching characters, scanning them in, and adding the profile as text on the image.

Isacean: I get what you're saying. See, the reason I started doing ref sheets isn't to dump information into my story - most of it will never be seen by anyone but me. But when I can look at a character in my story and know why they do what they do, and what shaped them, I can write them better. And then write them consistently wink I'm bad at that. Also, some of the info I have does make it into the story; little bits and pieces, perhaps only vaguely referenced by another character, that more fully flesh out the character in question for the reader.

So yeah, it's definitely a case of what works for the writer. I think if I used your method, I'd be hopelessly confused. :'P But it's always nice to see other ways of doing things. At the very least, it inspires me to think about why I do what I do.

Wow. I...wow. That's...holy sh-

Thanks! I think I have to go read it again just to wrap my mind around it. Someone put a lot of thought into that.

Indeed they did. The funny thing is that if you Google "detailed character sheet", that thread is the first link.
