For a starry sky full of reasons, I had to leave Memphis. There were all the usual excuses, of course. I was in the wrong place, at the wrong time. The politics were working against me. This city wasn’t the right fit. My chakras were not properly aligned. Strange how these same excuses fell into place wherever I went; Biloxi, Jackson, and Birmingham were all somehow wrong for me.

That’s what I had done when I left Mobile. There was no job waiting for me, like I had told my family. I wasn’t seeking glamor and blues, like I had told my friends. I thought that I could outrun my ghosts, trick them with a new haircut, with a new wardrobe. I was fooling myself, thinking that they wouldn’t find me, wouldn’t recognize me. There was a ghost waiting around every corner in Memphis. More often than in Mobile, it seemed. Nothing had changed, save my surroundings.

So I was returning to Mobile.

I didn’t have much of a choice, really. There was nowhere else for me to go, nowhere else to run. I sat on a bench like a bird on a wire, watching families and vagabonds shuffle through the train station. Children begging for candy, businessmen buying coffee for their fancy ladies, and middle-aged women refusing to let go of their debutante days. I imagined lives for them, all of their hopes and their dreams. I gave them plans, and decided their destinies.

From here, I couldn’t tell where I was. They were all the same, city train stations. Mason or Dixon, it didn’t matter. All the same delays, cracked plastic chairs, and iced tea that was either too sweet or not sweet enough.

From here, I could almost see home.

So... what was the main idea of this story? She just moves back to Mobile? Is she at the train station when the story takes place?

If by 'main idea', you mean 'topic', then yes, she moves back to Mobile, disillusioned. If you mean 'theme', then no; it's about being unable to run away from yourself, but trying anyway.

And yes, she's sitting in a train station, waiting for her train.
