Tatamisa had been doing her best to stay out of trouble but it seemed like there was no avoiding it nowadays. She didn't want to get into the middle of any fight, but somehow the huge, all-encompassing fight over who was in charge felt like it would be easier than figuring out what was really going on with her parents. But that, to her, mattered more. The Rebels could take care of the pride, she would look after her family.

It had been some time since Tyfu's death and her parents' split, but she was done giving her mother space or waiting to see if she would come looking for her- or Iki, or Zahiya, or anybody. So here she was, uncomfortably close to the Royal Dens, trying not to glare at every shadow as she sought out her mother in the slave dens.

If anybody that had met Halili as a cub and knew nothing of her life between then and now had seen her this night, they would think they had the wrong lioness. That Halili had a doppelganger, a twin who was night to her day. The once happy-go-lucky cub had grown up into an angry, bitter lioness, living alone in a den meant for a family. She was not - would never be - as bloodthirsty and cruel as the infamous Tyfu...but she could almost understand why the black lioness had acted the way she had.

Maybe Tyfu had onced loved too.

And see where it got them! First the problems with her father. Then her daughter. Now her mate. At this rate, Halili would find her whole family ranged against her when the Rebels made their final push.

These were the beige lioness' thoughts as she sat in the darkest shadows in the back of her den, pale purple eyes glaring blankly at the faintest trickle of moonlight that made its way back to her.

Tatamisa knew where she was going but she very nearly turned around and apologized when she peeked into her parents' den. Mother's den?? She wasn't sure. She had never seen her mother like this and it made her sick realizing how long it had taken her to check in.

"Mom?" she called quietly, frowning, "You look awful."

She stood in the entry of the den, the moonlight behind her doing little to illuminate her bulk but her pale feet and eyes practically glowed.

Halili had been glaring blindly, but her gaze was quick enough to sharpen and focus on the daughter standing before her like a shadow.

"Tatamisa," she said. Not a loving nickname, not a fond shortening. A simple, cold, acknowledgement of the lioness who stood before her. The silence between the pair stretched on as the Slave glared.

"Have you come to abandon me too?"

Being glared at by her mother brought up a mix of pity and frustration that Tatamisa had not been expecting, and her expression was a completely open book. She knew her mother, or thought she did. Stubborn, of course.. but like this? It was hard work to swallow her anger at the accusation that she was only here to pick a fight and leave her mother and for a moment she only stared back.

Finally, after what seemed like an eternity of silence, she sighed loudly and then walked right up to her mother, giving her an affectionate bump with her head and then nuzzling into her neck.

Halili really seemed like she needed a hug. With all the stupid, terrible things going on around the pride lately, maybe Tatamisa did too.

The silence was not encouraging, but what hope did Halili have left after what had already happened? Her children were adults, she had raised them as best she could, and even if they had abandoned her, a part of her (if she could bother to reach for it) was still proud that they were standing up for themselves.

In the icy coldness that had encircled her heart, the older lioness could not have predicted what her daughter did next.

The warmth of the younger lioness against her own cold body, the weight of Tatamisa leaning against her, these were sensations Halili had not thought to ever feel again.

The ice around her heart began to melt, reflected in the tears that began to fill and then overflow her eyes.

"Everything is a mess," she said, "It's not just you, or dad, or you and dad. It's everything. But we're not going to abandon you, we'd never do that."

Tatamisa stayed snuggled into her mother. It was hard not to add on that she had been worried that her mother had abandoned them. She had come here half-expecting a fight but it didn't seem like there was any fight left in Halili. Whatever fight her and dad had.. that was it. And whatever Tatamisa thought of that or the sides they'd taken didn't matter so much in the face of truly losing her mother.

"I'm sorry I took so long to come."

Did nobody else think to check on her? A plan to yell at her brother and sisters was already forming in her head.

For long moments, Halili was silent, nuzzling her daughter, leaning on the younger lioness to feel her warmth, wetting both their cheeks with her tears. She wanted to wonder which of her other children Tatamisa was referring to, whether it was just her littermates or all her siblings, but there was too much risk, too many who already stood openly against.

"But you did come, 'Misa. And I'm glad you did," Halili told the girl.

Tatamisa wasn't much like Halili had been at that age, but she was caring and loving and what more could a mother ask for in a daughter?

"When you have children of your own, Great Lion grant that you have one just like you." At the moment, she could think of no greater blessing for this most loyal of her children.

Tatamisa smiled and leaned back from her mother, staying close even when she took a seat and got comfortable. The only problem now was that pushing to talk about everything could ruin the moment, and they needed this. There would be time later. Who knew how much later, but it would be enough.

"Do you mind if I stay here tonight?" she asked.

The older lioness smiled, many of her cares and worries falling away from her face. All of her children had moved out, being adults, and it had been lonely, empty, and cold in the den without Orion.

"Of course, 'Misa," Halili replied. "I'd love for you to stay."

Perhaps, after some sleep, the future would look brighter. The night certainly did with Tatamisa present, despite her daughter's dark fur.

"Good."

It was all there was for her to say. She smiled at her mother and let herself down onto the ground with a soft thump. They could spend the night just being together and figure out the rest later. Her mother clearly needed more time.. and Tatamisa was surprised to find maybe she did, too. Dealing with this kind of family drama was hard.
