Upon arriving home, the Mwezi who had been in the Tianxia for so many months had very quickly split up. Kimondo was, naturally, a popular lioness but she escaped the crowd deftly. She couldn't deny her people the chance to see that she had indeed come home safe and sound, with the luck they had it was a great relief (even to her, now that she was home) .. but there were lions she was especially eager to see. As important as it was to catch up with Hodari- she already had heard shouted half-stories of Firekin and the mountains- but she couldn't keep herself from heading directly for the slave dens. Their return was anticipated but not on a strict deadline, she didn't know who all she would find there but hopefully..

Haiba had made a point of avoiding the crowd that greeted the homecoming lions, having learned in his time as an official slave to know when to be seen and when not to be. He was eager to see his mother, of course, but he knew she would come to them. She had to. They were young when she left but not babies, he consciously knew she loved them and never let any doubt creep into his mind.. still, when he heard she was back, he waited anxiously.

"There she is!"

Matumaini was lying next to his brother, waiting far more patiently. Oh yes, he was also excited for Mom's return, but she was the Queen and so had lots of lions eager for even a glimpse of her. After all, when your past few monarchs have not died so peacefully and you went on a journey that took forever, people generally want to be sure you're okay.

"Oh, she's coming to see us this soon?" 'Maini asked aloud. He was pleased that their mother would show them so much favoritism, despite their status as slaves. Well, even the Great Lion couldn't - and wouldn't - prevent love from binding people together.

Haiba couldn't help but glare at his brother just a bit, even as the relief of how quickly she appeared flooded him. That there were only the two of them right there said a lot, in fact. Sanaa's life was chaos with cubs of her own but the others would hear and head home soon.. but Kimondo made it to them first.

He shook himself off and tried to straighten up his mane a bit before their mother could get to them, she hadn't seen them since their manes had barely begun growing after all.

"Where is everybody else?" he wondered aloud, looking around as if their brothers might magically appear beside them.

If Haiba were just a little darker and a fair bit smaller, he could have been mistaken for Unyezi. With Matumaini beside him, though, there was no chance of confusing who she was seeing. Kimondo was struck by just how big they were, and how well their manes had filled out.. and how there were only two of them there. But she would catch the rest later.

She hurried up and didn't stop until she was close enough to bump each son affectionately.

"Haiba, Matumaini," she said, "You're both so big!"

The manes helped but they were both obviously larger than she was.

Matumaini clamped his jaw shut on several discourteous remarks he could make. He didn't want to make his mother feel bad for missing her children growing up, and he didn't want to talk about how small she looked compared to his memories. Silence wasn't a bad habit in a slave, but the white and red male made sure to cultivate it because his first reactions tended to be...harsh.

"Well, surely you didn't expect us to stay small forever, did you Mother?" he was finally able to offer a joke. Sure, there was the stereotypical parental response to make to that, about how a child would always be the paren'ts cub, but it was a loving thing to say. He was trying, right?

He could save the savage, biting remarks for...later. Elsewhere. A different audience.

Matumaini's hesitation didn't go unnoticed but the Queen had no desire to pick a fight when she was just so happy to see them. She, too, held her tongue when she longed to ask where the others had gotten themselves to. She missed them more than words could say, but she knew she owed them what words she could find.

"No, of course not," she replied, though her tone didn't sound so sure about it, "I bet you've both got grandpa beat."

Haiba sent Matumaini another glare, having spent his youth trying to keep his siblings corralled on behalf of their absent mother- he was the oldest, it was his job to keep the family together, after all! He had always taken it a bit too seriously, but even he knew not to nag while their mother was right there. Mother hen that he was, he too had learned the value of silence as a slave.

"We've missed you, mother," he offered, turning to Kimondo and smiling, "Have you even talked to Aunt Hodari yet?"

Haiba's Look didn't go unnoticed, and a bit of mirth lit 'Maini's purple eyes. Very well, if the Eldest wanted to keep things under control, he'd have to just spoil it for his brother. Aunt Hodari would undoubtedly fill Mother in on everything, but who said that patience was a virtue?

"It's been pretty quiet here. Aside from the strange visit by these big red lions called Firekin, and Sanaa's cubs, and, of course, everyone missing you lots, it's been nice and boring without you."

Practical jokes were best when said with a straight face. It helped that the only "joke" here was just blurting everything out purely to see how the Queen reacted.

Haiba froze when Matumaini just went and decided to spill everything at once. The Firekin were one thing but just telling their mother about Sanaa's cubs- and leaving out the circumstances--

Oh boy.

Kimondo was not surprised to hear Matumaini describe a strange visit from the Firekin but the words Sanaa's cubs stuck out immediately. She hadn't even entertained the thought that she might come home to find her children had started families of their own, which was ridiculous considering Hodari had grandchildren born in the Tianxia that were just being introduced to their home now.

She barely managed to bite back the one question that immediately came to her mind: What class are they?

"Sanaa--"

In the end, it turned out she was lost for words.

Haiba stared as Kimondo processed the information and decided to cut off any more word vomit that Matumaini might blurt out by jumping in for himself.

"You might want to sit down," he started, stumbling a bit as he wasn't fully prepared to explain.

"Yes, of course, sit down and rest from your long journey!" 'Maini exclaimed, getting up to push aside rocks and retrieving some dried grasses that their mother might recline in more comfort. He was now being overly solicitous, if only to mess with Haiba.

Really, this was too much fun.

"Speaking of new faces, did you bring any home with you?" the younger lion asked as he busied himself. He wouldn't be surprised if any of the travelers had opted to stay...or if they'd picked up any strays on their way home. It was just good conversation to ask, right?

Again, Haiba was cut off by his brother but this time, thankfully, he simply overindulged in attempted hospitality and changed the subject instead of diving right into what exactly Sanaa had gone and done.. and Haiba wasn't sure if that was more or less frustrating than just tossing the information about her grandchildren out there.

He simply fell silent and glared for now.

Kimondo's mind was occupied trying to imagine Sanaa as a mother, married, or not married! And her cubs! What class they were in was extremely relevant, but if she was just hearing about it now did that mean there was no chance they could be heirs? She was vaguely aware of Matumaini going out of his way to be extra courteous but she didn't sit down and she ultimately did let his question distract her.

"Miyako had cubs while we were in the Tianxia," she said, suddenly realizing that perhaps this made her and Hodari even on that front, "You have young cousins who will join you in the low class soon, actually."

She admired Miyako and how she and her family returned to the Mwezi'Johari without reservation. The young family had handled the birth of slaves much better than the Queen herself had, but there was more hope that Miyako's cubs would stay out of the spotlight anyway.

Matumaini blinked as his mother answered the question. Cubs, huh? And more for the Low Class? Well, he certainly hoped they'd been raised thus far with an understanding of the various classes. Otherwise...well, they'd cross that river when they came to it.

"Well, cubs seem to bring smiles to everyone's faces," he replied diplomatically, before his smile turned mischevious. "Even when they're no longer cubs."

That look went straight to Haiba and 'Maini had no doubt his brother would interpret it exactly as it had been meant.

They were all adults but Haiba and Matumaini were both still quite young.. and Haiba knew he couldn't speak or act out of turn with almost anybody else but like hell he was going to just let 'Maini do this. With a frustrated snarl, he suddenly turned and tackled his brother.

"Stop! Being! Such! An! a**!" he snapped.

Kimondo jumped back when Haiba flew at Matumaini. They were much larger, their voices much deeper and Haiba's language was a tad more colorful.. but suddenly it didn't seem like she had been gone all that long. It was almost reassuring to know that even if she had left them while they were still growing, they were still themselves. And now she was here to see it.

She chuckled to herself, and carefully stepped around them while they were distracted- spotting another figure demanding her attention nearby. They could sort themselves out, she would be back.

It was so good to be home.
