Katranak had proven herself worthy of proper membership in the Firekin, though she had done so somewhat reluctantly. Being a social experiment of sorts never sat right with her, nor her sisters, really.. but still, she had developed some loyalty to the Firekin and had decided to stay after she won her way in. That there were other rogue-born Firekin now helped alleviate some of her anger, and she had finally decided she was ready to continue her path in proving that she was a worthy fighter.

She was very familiar with the training grounds but she was there with renewed purpose now. She waited and picked herself out a victim. He was an older lion in bright red, giving the strong impression that he was old blood. That was good enough for her.

Off to the side, out of the way of the practicing lions, Utsaha sat silently and watched as her partner prepared to duel. The jackal had befriended Katranak at a young age and had pleeenty of opinions about her form and technique, it had been the easiest way to solidify their friendship before and now.. it was expected of her since Katranak had decided to pursue a higher rank.

Wook arrived with his usual friendly grin and hearty hellos. He was loud, and it was obvious the training grounds were a home within a home. He had met his mate on these very training grounds, dueled with her and eventually bettered himself along side her. They held a special place within his heart - especially with his desires to rise the ranks. Following a quick conversation with a young, hopeful lion he lifted his head in time to spy a lioness headed his direction. "Hmph." He made a small sound as he considered her pelt and the way she moved. Like a snake gliding its way towards him, he was a target.

Near seconds after watching the lioness walk towards him did he realize who she was. Names escaped him frequently, but he knew her as the first of many cubs to be born to a rogue Father. His thoughts were neutral on the matter, his own bloodline defied him the chance at arguing the necessity for rogue breeding. He didn't dare speak first, silence was a tool like any other, instead he chose to peer at her with his piercing purple eyes in curious wonder at her determined pace.

"Are you ready?"

She wasted no time or words issuing her challenge, they were in the training grounds and she could be as friendly and chatty as she liked .. or not. Besides, any Firekin should be ready to fight at a moment's notice. It was a far more interesting strategy than just wandering around asking for a sparring partner.

Since she already had his attention, Katranak didn't wait for a response and she lunged forward to commence the duel.

From a safe distance, Utsaha watched, shaking her head silently at the bold move- though it was immediately apparent she was going to land a blow. If her opponent didn't accept the challenge and fight back, she'd just be beating up a random lion in the training grounds and oh boy, that would be fun to explain.

Ready. Was what the lion had meant to say, but instead she was met with silence and a steady stare. Wook just couldn't open his jaws fast enough due to the sudden assault. With a small sound he made an attempt at dodging the blow by stepping backward, but her momentum firmly placed her presence within his space. Purple eyes grew wide and where a frown should be a wide grin grew giving him a rather insane appearance. The position wasn't great for him though and his inability to dodge caught up with him as he felt the collision run it's course. This meant pressing his paws into the earth and attempting to hold his own against the surprise attack. The whole ordeal knocked the air from his lungs and he had to inhale, deeply as he could, to gain back some form. "Ready." He finally managed to say - still wearing that same grin.

"But are you?" He taunted merrily, enjoying himself. Wook was firmly planted where he stood following the episode, she had gotten a paw up on him. He didn't dare look away from her. Collecting his thoughts to make hasty decisions was easy when it came to duels or fighting of most any kind. These moments were second nature. Now that the gap was closed he decided to take his chance on striking out with his left paw, claws sheathed - there was never a need to harm ones own soldiers or guards or that was his ongoing thought.

The change in Wook was noticed simultaneously by the lioness and the jackal watching, and the whole duel suddenly became more interesting. Katranak had a wicked grin on her face when he taunted her, dancing back a few steps as reached out to strike her. He missed, but barely- had his claws been extended, she would have felt it more.

She noticed that, and made a mental note as she pushed forward again.

With her claws extended, she aimed a strike at his face. If she hit as expected, it would avoid permanent damage but send the message that she wasn't willing to return his consideration. Since her mother was the heavily scarred regent, it made sense.

Utsaha got to her feet and inched closer, though carefully. So far there hadn't been much broad movement in the duel, but Katranak moved with such intention that it was obvious she was missing something. From her spot she had no idea they were each making a statement about the use of claws.

The miss turned his grinning face sour for a moment, but the moment passed quickly. He found himself dueling for fun and not for the pleasure of winning though she was stirring up his desire to do better.

Her next move was predicted, but not predictable. Wook didn't have a chance to blink before she was at him again. The unpredictable part was the unsheathed claws that he saw glint just before he narrowly closed the eye where they were aimed. He felt the contact almost immediately. His pelt hid the immediate draw of blood, but only for moments following her attack. True colors were shown in mere moments - he should have known better.

His head fell to the side a little as he dared to open his eye. Wook feared, for a moment, the worst but those fears subsided as his blurred vision focused. Close. His gaze returned to her in a glare that looked odd with the smile he opted to wear. There was no hesitation or second thought on his next act. Wook chose to swipe once again, this time with claws - he aimed for her face as well, shot for shot. His blow likely wouldn't likely do much in the way of heavy damage as he felt his footing give a little.

Katranak watched his reaction to her strike carefully, pleased to see she successfully demonstrated control by not blinding him in the process of testing herself (and him). When he retaliated, she wasn't expecting him to mirror her action but she was ready enough that he didn't do nearly as much damage to her. The blow succeeded in another way, though, as it paused the onslaught of attacks.

She leaped back a few feet and grinned at him.

"So close," she taunted.

Utsaha found a place to watch from that was significantly closer, but balancing between watching and not being a distraction was tricky. Thankfully she was small and around the training grounds it was common to have an audience.

Please would also be the way to describe his final appearance as she backed off. Even her taunt rolled off his shoulders. She was adept in combat, as she should be, and he could see she aimed to go places with that continued determination and pressure applied. He was impressed.

"So it would seem." He finally decided to respond to her. Following his words he took in a slow breath to calm the sudden adrenaline that came with making contact in an assault. The whole fight was refreshing. "Is that?" He queried, but it was a rhetorical question for he wasn't finished with her yet.

Just as she had done to him in the beginning of their duel he turned on her - while they had been talking he worked his back legs to position for quick movement. And with his final question he launched himself forward to tackle the lioness. He found that he did well in close quarter combat, not that this battle was anything to go off of.

She didn't respond when he spoke, perfectly content with the level of conversation they were having during this duel. Katranak was sure she had the upper paw in this, but that just meant it was her's to lose from here. If she lost focus just because of a good start, she'd deserve what she got.

When Wook lunged at her, she was easily taken down but used the momentum to prevent him from pinning her down. Kicking out her back legs was enough to give her room to roll out and get back on her feet, but it was barely a counter attack.

Utsaha watched Katranak go down and held her breath, but she let it go almost immediately. The move was far from elegant but the jackal knew the lioness generally had mixed success with the maneuver. It looked about right. Not perfect but good practice. A mental note for later discussion.

A Wook in motion doesn't stay in motion, not this time. Where he thought he would have a chance there was none. Her nimble movements got her out of the jam just as quickly as he had her 'pinned'. He felt the pressure of her back legs against his gut and was winded for the moment, but that was all it took as he watched her escape a possible embaressing prison.

She was gone, but he wasn't about to leave her alone.

Wook turned to fully face the lioness again. She was back to her feet following his attack. He paused, in what might look like hesitation, but it was more of a how can I trip her up? He considered himself relatively skilled, though not creative by any means. One thing he was good at was through his weight around. Striking out was great, but a pin would be better.

Looking a bit more fiercely determined than before he lunged forward again, this time paws out stretched and claws unsheathed. He didn't aim to do much damage, but he wanted a more firm grasp - if he managed to get her. Of course this put him in harms way just as equally as it did for her.

Katranak hesitated in the moment it took Wook to decide on the next best course to take. Like him, though, her hesitation was not idle and she prepared herself for whatever his next move was. When he came lunging at her again, there was only a split second to decide how to respond. She wasn't going to get anywhere just throwing him off, so she had to act more offensively.. so she braced herself for impact and followed a similar motion as before.

Wook succeeded in getting a good grip on her, and the weight of the strike paired with the pain from his claws digging into her made it difficult for her to gain control- but that he was guarding against her getting away again worked in her favor.

She didn't want to get away this time, instead she put all of her strength into flipping him over so she could get the upper paw. She barely hit the sand before she managed to turn the tables yet again.

Utsaha held her breath again, this wasn't as clear a win as when she had escaped before. Katranak was using momentum to her advantage but while they were still tangled up, her opponent could use it, too. Her lioness was clearly gambling after realizing they were about even, what happened now would decide who won.. and the jackal didn't want to miss it!

Determination helped him find his way to catching his opponent. Claws sunk into her flesh in a satisfying pace that helped adrenaline course through him. It didn't change what happened next..

Wook was moving at such a speed that he very nearly missed the fact that her sheer force was propelling him the opposite direction just as quickly. He caught glimpse of her face, it displayed the pain she must have felt when his claws set in, but that wasn't about to stop her - or so he discovered.

"Oof."

The sound he made was so quiet it could have almost gone unheard. It was made as he collided with the ground and settled amidst the dust that would eventually settle. He was breathing heavily now from their most recent efforts. This was a taxing duel, one he would enjoy recalling for plenty of time to come. At this point he realized his loss and simply took a moment to absorb it in silence.

Victory!

Katranak was rather.. surprised when her final move worked out so well for her. Not only did she keep them moving but now she had managed to pin him. It took more grace than she had to be a good winner, her self-satisfaction was plain on her face, but she still tried to be good about it. When it was clear he wasn't going to fight back, she carefully removed herself and shook off.

The claw marks on her were stinging and her body ached from being tackled twice, but she paid it no mind.

"You almost had me," she said.

Utsaha bounded over and wove through Katranak's feet excitedly.

"You probably shouldn't just jump at lions," the jackal chided thoughtfully, "Maybe this doesn't count."

Katranak rolled her eyes.

"Shut up, Utsaha," she said, and then started to walk off. Utsaha followed and the pair chattered back and forth as they headed from the training grounds toward the Oasis. Katranak didn't know exactly what she wanted to do with herself, but being someone to watch out for in the training grounds was good. She had a decent start at building that reputation now.
