The following are notes, thoughts, and observations on Tai/Buki/DR System in no particular order.

Warning: This post is subject to edits and things may be deleted, altered, or added to. While they are open to discussion, they may be incomplete and should not be taken as absolute in regards to opinion. A more Concise and structured version may be developed in the future

Things that seem commonly Forgotten:

Descriptive ranks will only factor into simple and complex attacks. Specifically, your speed and strength are only counted for attacking with simple and complex techniques, and reflex and fortitude only count for dodging and deflecting complex techniques.
Fortitude and the rank of your defensive action determine if you can block a simple or complex attack. Reflex and the rank of your evasive action determine if you can dodge a simple or complex. This is the opposite of how strength determines the damage of an attack, and speed how fast it's coming at you

When attempting to avoid ninjutsu, you HAVE to use the X ranked dodge to avoid being hit by the ninjutsu. Reflex will no longer factor in to dodging ninjutsu and any other spiritual techniques, and fortitude. A general rule of thumb, is if an attack is not affected by DR, then DR cannot effect dodging it. Techniques involving dodging that are affected by DR do not have their affects boosted by reflex against ninjutsu and spiritual.


D.R. cannot increase anything past S+ in rank.

Once a Practice or Training technique has been learned, it becomes a passive bonus for the practitioner.

Observations:

People tend to perceive DR as a Power Boost over Cost Efficiency.

People tend to confuse Passive bonuses as Active bonuses

Classes and styles provide massive amounts of Passive DR bonuses.

Terminology mixed and unclear.

Rules are spread out.

Thoughts:

Terminology is mixed and unclear due to failures in development, implementation, and maintenance.

Oversaturation of passive DR bonuses lead to ineffectual class and style bonuses.

Misconception of DR as Power bonus over Cost Efficiency, leads to an unhealthy and misinformed view of DR resulting in a desire for maximizing Active bonuses. Paired with commonly forgotten Rules, it culminates in an interpretation as a broken system.

Potential Fixes:

Reduction of passive bonuses where needed.

Re-establishment of terminology with reflected changes

Streamlining and Condensing Rules to a single location.

Adapting changes to classes and styles to better offer bonuses to make them competitive.


Terminology:

Descriptive ranks: Strength, Speed, Fortitude, and Reflex. Values are: Slightly (1), Mildly (2), Moderately (3), Heavily (4), Greatly (5), and Supremely (6). Each Supreme bonus (6) Provides 1 rank increase in that DR's field.

* Strength: increases Damage and difficulty to Block or Brace against the attack.

* Speed: Increases Difficulty to Evade or Parry

* Fortitude: Increases Ease of Blocking or Bracing.

* Reflex: Increases Ease of Evading or Parrying.

Simple: Techniques that cost stamina/ DR applies normally/ Considered 1-rank weaker when interacting with Complex, 2-ranks weaker when interacting with Spiritual.

Complex: Techniques that cost stamina and Chakra/ 1/2 DR applies/ Considered 1-rank Stronger when interacting with Simple, 1-rank weaker when interacting with Spiritual.

Spiritual: Techniques that cost Chakra/ DR Does not apply and Techniques interacting do not benefit from DR/ Ninjutsu is considered Spiritual for interactions/ Considered 1-rank Stronger when interacting with Complex, 2-ranks Stronger when interacting with Simple.

Passive: Does not require an activation. DR Provided from all passive sources caps at 12 for the four Descriptive ranks.

Active: Requires an Activation to use. DR provided goes beyond the 12 cap on passive.

Training: Passive modifiers that change how a style operates. They are learned like any other technique in a style.

Defensive: Any technique that is used to block, brace, evade, or parry. Has costs and takes an Defensive Activation.

* Block: Defensive tech where something is placed in the way of an attack: Physical techniques applying DR use Fortitude

* Brace: Defensive tech wherein the attack is endured or otherwise makes contact. Physical techniques applying DR use Fortitude

* Evade: Defensive tech wherein the attack is avoided completely. Physical techniques applying DR use Reflex

* Parry: Defensive tech wherein the opponents attack is deflected or redirected. Physical techniques applying DR use Reflex.

Offensive: Any technique used to Strike or Grapple. Has costs and takes an Offensive Activation.

* Strike: Offensive tech where the user attempts to punch, kick, hit with a weapon, or otherwise attempts to impact the opponent. Physical techniques applying DR use Speed to determine how fast the attack is and strength to determine how hard it hits.

* Grapple: Offensive tech where the user attempts to grab a hold of the opponent's limbs, weapon, clothing, or attempts to throw the opponent. Physical techniques applying DR use Speed to determine how fast the grab is and strength to determine how hard one is thrown or held.

** Combination{a.k.a Korabo}: Any technique with a specific rank, that allows the use of multiple techniques in a single activation. The rank and type of the technique is dependent on the combination technique and not the the techniques used within.

Clashing: When an Offensive Technique is used to Interact with another Offensive activation.

* Counter: Any technique that includes a Defensive and Offensive Technique in a single Activation.

Supplemental: Any technique that does not cost the user an action to use.

*Augment: Any technique that actively modifies another technique as a supplemental activation

Sustained: A type of technique that lasts beyond an initial post, wherein the activation is only used in the initial post and the cost is paid per subsequent post to maintain.

* Stance: Active modifiers to Strikes, Evades, or Parries that are Sustained techs. They are learned like any other technique in a style.

* Position: Active modifiers to Grapples, Blocks, or Braces that are Sustained techs. They are learned like any other technique in a style.

                        ▰ SOCIAL AND PERSONALITY

                        Nindo: "There's nothing quite like the sea, its a shame we're so far away from it."
                        Personality: Mostly kind and helpful, but tends to get aggressive quickly. Doesn't doubt herself and insists you don't either. You either survive or you don't, its the law of the ocean. Thinks quickly and acts quicker. Be careful with her temper, her bite is really worse than her bark. Has a tendency to give people nicknames and use them rather than their real names or titles. Tends to have a Matriarchal viewpoint as women have generally treated her better throughout her life.

                        Background: Originally from the land of Eddies, Miyoshi village. Ostracized for her shark-like features, Mako was an abandoned child who survived by stealing fish from the fisherman. Some of the fisherman even attempted to burn her alive when she wasn't much more than 8. During an attack by vampires, she grabbed a machete from a shed and saved several villagers. Bathed and blood and gleefully slaughtering monsters, made her seem like a greater monster and she was driven out of town. She made her way from her homeland into the mountainous Land of Floods.A Kunoichi from the Village Hidden in the Storms found her and seeing her potential brought Mako to the village. She entered the academy at a late stage, but is ready to prove herself an asset.

                        Mako's first day of class did not go as expected. She had followed directions to the appropriate classroom and was waiting patiently. Then a very rude individual known as Sun-b*****d (Belamos) followed by Akasame (Aurelia) entered and demanded she vacate the premises. When Mako asked Akasame why said Sun-b*****d spoke on her behalf, the man attacked her. Being unable to fight back, she calmed down when Akasame spoke to her. Afterwords, she was given a weapon and told to spar Akasame. Impressed with Akasame's strength, she agreed to spar her again anytime. Then, Sun-b*****d and Akasame abandoned her to do their own training. Mako went to the library and studied up on Ninjutsu from the scrolls listed there before traveling throughout the academy to Self-teach. With nothing left to do, Mako decided to travel around the village. She came across a Dojo where she met To-Be-Named (Unki) and Hesaki (Sheva). To-Be-Named (Unki) found Mako's treatment to be quite upsetting and offered to see where she and Hesaki were at in regards to their skill.


                        ▰ CLASSES AND STATS

                        First Class: Bloodline
                        ▱▰▱ Dual AncestryDual Ancestry allows you to have full access to two bloodlines upon creation including all techniques, abilities, and personal attributes associated with them. Your primary bloodline's roster is where your name appears. For biographical purposes, your secondary bloodline may be genetic or implanted at your discretion. The Rinnegan may not be chosen as a secondary bloodline. Combo Element Kekkei Genkai and Jiongu users do not have access to Dual Ancestry nor can they be chosen as a secondary bloodline. Dual Ancestry users do not have access to the implant system including the Genetic Palette personal attribute.
                        Second Class: Bloodline
                        ▱▰▱ KeystoneYou receive an additional 5 custom technique slots to be used only on bloodline and bloodline-related techniques. Additionally, you may create a "keystone" technique; this technique is essentially a Bloodline ninja's signature move, with power and versatility similar to a technique such as Kamui. This technique must be submitted as a custom jutsu and approved. It also does not take a custom jutsu slot. In addition, you are able to use your third activation for any Bloodline Jutsu, whether it is offensive or defensive, once every two turns. This discipline may not be taken in conjunction with another Keystone Discipline.

                        Strengths:
                        • Swimming. Fast, Wicked fast.
                        • Highly intelligent and acute vision.
                        Weaknesses:
                        • Temperamental. May one moment be your best pal and next snapping at you.
                        • Sharks are friends, not food. Will become enraged if served a shark based dish. Also seems extra attracted toward squid based dishes...and people.
                        Fears:
                        • Her irascible nature and intimidating size, do not lend well to making friends. Deeply ingrained instincts make her afraid she will ultimately ostracize herself.
                        • Deserts. The absence of water, humidity, and any form of moisture really freaks her out. She loves to swim and does not like the thought of there being a place nearly devoid of water.

                        Modifiers:
                        • Bloodline – Bloodline: If this class is taken as the first and second class, you may pick 2 of its disciplines. Additionally, bloodline cast by this specialization are cheaper in cost as determined by the users body rank. At body rank D and C costs are reduced by five[5]. At body rank B and A, costs are reduced by ten[10]. Finally at body rank S and S+ costs are reduced by fifteen[15] These reductions DO NOT stack and override their previous totals. (D+C -5, B+A -10, S beyond -15). Gain an Additional 5 Custom slots dedicated to your bloodline.
                        • Learn 2 extra Bloodline technique per post.
                        • All Hoshigaki have the water element, and techniques that form a fling sharks made of water do not require slots to learn.
                        • They learn water techniques and bukijutsu at a rate of +1 per post.
                        • Hoshigaki are quick to anger, and when they smell blood, literally or figuratively, they tend to be quick to capitalize on the weakness they perceive.
                        • Hoshigaki are capable of harnessing natural energy while moving so long as the are in water, and have their own sage mode as well. This sage mode cannot be maintained for long while on dry land, but because they can continuously refresh their own natural energy while in water they are capable of using it for much longer than normal. Requires A rank to access. It only requires 5 posts of deep meditation on their connection to the sea itself for them to access it. This sage mode follows its own rules, and gives the listed Senjutsu techniques as well. Incompatible with another sage mode simultaneously.

                        The Sage mode gives an active supreme boost to fortitude and speed, alongside an equivalent boost to strength and reflex while in the water. The user gathers 50 natural energy per post while in the water, but the sage mode can only be maintained for a max of five posts, even while submerged, after which the user's remaining chakra and stamina are reduced by 50%, and all NE is lost. Water techniques and bukijutsu overwhelm same ranked techniques, following normal sage mode rules.
                        • The Raiton Techniques the user performs appear the same color as the user's chakra.

                        Personal Attributes:
                        • Sharklike Aggression: The Hoshigaki clan members start with an additional 2 buki styles.
                        • Raijin's Blade: All complex and spiritual Bukijutsu gain a lightning element. This additional lightning element added to the technique reduces the opponent's speed by a slight amount [1] per contact made between the technique and the target per rank of the technique.
                        • Hydrodynamic Casting: Mako may exchange Handseals for Somatic Movements when casting Jutsu.
                        • Academy PA: Apex Precision: Mako may use and adapt any Bukijutsu style for use with her weapons.

Technique Name: Ampullae of Lorenzini
Rank: E-S+
Type: Bloodline Keystone (Hoshigaki/Hatake)
Element: Suiton/Raiton Bloodline origin
Description: Along Mako's face and body are what appear to be small black freckles. In reality these "Freckles" contain a chakra receptive, jelly-like substance. The substance reacts to the presence of bio-electrical and pheromone signals, sending warnings of impending attack. Mako's Fight or Flight instinct flares up allowing her to react to the presence of a foe more efficiently.


Passive(Triggered): 30 foot Radius Movement sense.
Trigger: Fight or Flight instinct.
Activation levels:
At E-S+ rank: Adds a slight (1) increase to reflex per rank, at S+ it becomes Double Supreme (12). Sustained at 1 rank less than initial activation cost, to a minimum of E. In addition 30 foot radius extends by 5 feet per rank, then doubles at S+ to 120 feet.

A-S+ Senjutsu Bonus: In addition to the effects listed above, When in a Sage mode, all Buki, Suiton, and Raiton jutsu negate opposing Overwhelming in clashes by paying 1 rank less Nature Chakra of the technique used by the user in the clash. If within a body of water, the sensing range extends to entire body of water. At S+ The user's ability to detect Individuals within range no longer requires movement. In addition, the user becomes immune to damage via their own Elemental and Bloodline techniques for Duration.
