Still with her goal of climbing the ranks in mind, Katranak was taking her training very seriously. She didn't have much of a social life and she didn't really care, this was how she liked spending her time. Besides, she had Utsaha and the jackal was not only helpful but a good friend. The pair frequently lurked in the Training Grounds and today was no exception. What was unusual, though, was that they stood in the middle of the sparring area quietly chatting before Katranak stepped back and traced a wide circle in the sand.

"This should do," she said, walking back into the middle of the circle thoughtfully. Utsaha looked doubtful.

"Sure," the jackal said, "But it won't last long."

The lioness walking from the edge inward had already disturbed the tracing, and it would only get worse when she fought. But the plan was less about the exact boundary and this was a way to visualize it.

"That's fine, you just keep watch," Katranak replied, "Now let's find an opponent."

Huoxin hadn't been to the training grounds in too long. It wasn't that she had forgotten her own desires to rise through the ranks, but she had let herself take a break. Now that she had returned, she realized that she was extremely rusty, and would probably not do well with her first bout in too much time to count.

As she drew closer, she noticed another female who was ready. Her darker coat made her stick out against the warm sands, and Huoxin's eyes were drawn immediately towards her. She gauged her form for a moment before deciding to offer a duel against her.

She nodded to the striped lioness as she drew closer. "If you are looking for a training duel, I would be glad to be your opponent," Huoxin stated. "I would like to sharpen my own dulled claws, if you would have me."

Roll 1: Glancing Blow!
Total: 2

Katranak spotted Huoxin as she approached, offering a grin and a nod when she offered a challenge. It was an exceptionally polite challenge but it was all she needed, really. An older, out of practice lioness.. she would have to adjust her strategy accordingly but she had two goals in mind so she was ready.

"Sure," she said, "Get ready."

A nod to Utsaha and the jackal marched away to watch the lions spar. While each got into place, she made a mental note of how far apart they started and the invisible boundaries that Katranak would be setting for herself.

Katranak barely waited for Huoxin to get ready before lunging forward.

Roll: Glancing attack
Total: 2

The acceptance of the duel was appreciated, and Huoxin responded with a smile. The jackal companion that her opponent had safely tucked itself out of the way, and then the duel began.

Huoxin knew better than the let her guard down, but she had a lot more rust to shake off than she had initially realized. Her opponent was quick to move, and Huoxin was able to dodge the worst of the hit. She hissed with the pain, and tucked her ears back on her skull as she returned the hit with one of her own.

Roll 2: Bide!
Total: 4

Katranak missed her mark, though she felt the nearness of it- and also barely evaded the counter-attack of her opponent. Rusty enough to not be able to full dodge, not so rusty that she couldn't counter equally. Unlike Huoxin, Katranak was silent when struck and fell back into the sand. She didn't go far but she didn't immediately strike back either. Mindful of her imaginary circle, she kept close and looked for a better opportunity.

Utsaha made herself comfortable in the sand some ways away and watched closely, too, lest she miss something useful to discuss with the lioness later.

Huoxin was feeling the disappointment of her actions n** at her heart. She knew that she could be better than this, and had proven herself in the past to be better than this! Her golden eyes narrowed as she watched her opponent skillfully pull back, keeping at eye on her movements. Huoxin took a moment to attempt to collect her thoughts and cool her mind, but the warmth of the sand under her paws felt like they were telling her to rush! Push forward! Life was about the heat of the moment, and she she reached out to strike with her right forepaw, back legs pushing her forward as quick as she could go.

And yet...her forepaw hit nothing but air, and confusion enveloped her mind. What just happened?

Roll 3: Glancing Blow!
Total: 6

Katranak was so close that it was amazing that she managed to dodge Huoxin's next blow, but far less surprising that it was followed up by a poorly aimed blow from the younger opponent. She knew even as she reached out with her paw that she wasn't going to hit but stumbling back would be worse than a failed follow-through. From the side, Utsaha was starting to see a problem in their training plan already. It looked to her like they did indeed find something that the soldier needed to work on.

Roll: Hit!
Total: 6

The foolish miss had hit Huoxin's pride hard, but she knew it was because she was letting her poor impulses control her. She needed to sort back to her original training, and learn to do what she could to predict her opponent's movements. It wasn't too easy when her opponent had dizzying stripes and a dark coat, but the golden-eyed lioness did her best to guess.

And though she was delivered a slight blow, the claws of her opponent brushing through her fur and barely grazing her skin, she pushed through that attack and swung out for her own. She felt like she would scream in triumph as she at least made a connection. Yes!! Her confidence was beginning to warm and heal her heart for what she wanted; to get better and dueling.

Roll 4: Glancing Blow!
Total: 8

As Huoxin landed the first real blow of the duel, Katranak finally made a sound: she snarled in frustration. It didn't cross her mind that she might be doing better if she wasn't trying to keep the fight so restricted to one place, she didn't have the time to think about that- and stumbling backwards, away from the blow, only made her more frustrated.

So she lunged forward again, closing the gap created by the solid blow Huoxin got in, and tried again to get control over the situation- not as poorly as some might, but clearly not headed for success unless her opponent fumbled.

Utsaha shook her head from the sidelines. Katranak was thinking too small and she was limiting herself too much. So far there was nothing that should have been exceptionally difficult to handle but the young lioness was making it worse for herself. And her opponent, she guessed, but the obvious flawed choices the dark lioness made wouldn't be as obvious to someone who wasn't familiar with her.

Roll: Hit!
Total: 9

To be honest...though there were moments that Huoxin felt like she was faltering completely, she wasn't doing too poorly. That realization hadn't quite hit her until she finally focused her mind and landed a solid hit. The jarring heat and sudden contact made the red lioness realize that though she had been grazed a few times, her opponent hadn't been able to land that same sort of solid hit against her.

And so even if Huoxin ended up losing this fight, she felt her skills honing back into the blade she wanted them to be.

She went back into the fight feeling more calm. She pushed through the blow that the dark lioness attempted, and retaliated with her own hit. She felt the successful move land its mark, and sucked in a hiss of air as she celebrated that contact. Another hit!

Roll 5: Miss!
Total: 9 - Katranak can't win

The frustration of missing again didn't help Katranak's focus as Huoxin retaliated. She didn't even see it coming before she had been struck again and set stumbling away again, growling and trying to steady herself but not giving herself enough time. If she hesitated, this would have been Huoxin's chance to end the fight, so Katranak foolishly tried again. Desperately, instead of striking out with a paw, she pounced.

If she didn't get full control now, it was over.

And unfortunately for her, she missed. Her paws touched the sand and she knew it was over.

Utsaha was shaking her head from the side.

Roll: Glancing hit
Total: 11

Huoxin was easily able to dodge the next attack from her opponent. It seemed that though Huoxin had been able to gather herself up straight and continue the fight, somehow her opponent seemed to lose it towards the end. As Huoxin didn't know much about her...she wasn't really sure what went wrong, other than perhaps her confidence cracking once she was able to land a blow.

She attempted one last strike, one to hopefully feel as confident as her last two. She realized too late that she misinterpreted her opponent's movements, and she barely made any contact at all against that dark fur. "Damn."

Katranak missed her attack and barely dodged one more blow from her opponent.. and she knew there was no recovering from this unless the duel was going to go on for far too long. She was a proud lioness but she could admit defeat, she had to be able to or she wouldn't get very far. Or learn anything or whatever.

"I concede," she said, taking a deep breath and moving purposefully away from the red lioness, "You win."

She shook herself off and tried not to look too frustrated about the loss. At the very least, she was being polite about it and not storming off, so that was something. Utsaha recognized the end and started walking back in towards them, already starting to review all the mental notes she had made to share with Katranak when they were alone again.

Towards the beginning, Huoxin had doubted that she could win...but she did. THis was another step in the right direction, and she was thankful for what she had learned in this duel. Her opponent seemed polite, though didn't necessarily want to discuss exactly what had happened. And that was fair enough for her.

"Thank you for the duel," Huoxin said with a slight nod to her opponent, noticing that her companion was approaching her. Perhaps she could speak with her another day...but for now, Huoxin would go stretch her muscles, and see if she could find her mate, somewhere in the sands.
