• Shards: The Soul, a Shard of who you used to be before death. A piece. Shards are what the dead community call the recently departed who have come to the Younger Plane and the Gates whether by choice or by design. Shards are rife with Emotional Energy, called Chroma, as they are near to their original selves. Shards maintain memories of who they once were, and are constantly gushing this energy out as any human would. The problem is that Chroma is an energy source, like Mana, for the dead and also serve as a form of currency. As such Shards are highly valued since they can regenerate their Chroma, unlike the other Dead. A Shard can be drained of all Chroma, however, and as such they are kept just above the draining point often in factories to keep the Chroma machine running. A Shard drained utterly of its Chroma become Cracked, and if caught by a Gate Warden will be drawn through the gates into the Elder Plane or the Echoes and transition into Fade or Sprite.
• Fades: Shards that have Cracked and been drawn into the Echoes become Fades over time, dead beings that are defined by their emotional state while originally alive. Were they filled with anger, jealousy, or other commonly "negative" emotional states? If so their Karma is Negative, and they become a Fade. There are six types of fades, depending on what emotion they were mostly feeling upon death. There are Fury/Anger, Greed, Gluttony, Vengeance/Hate, Lust and Torment. Each emotion gave a specific type of appearance, And though the higher Rank a being was the more human they would appear these always had characteristics of this emotion. Until the Humans began to return each Fade was only allowed to be tethered to 1 emotion at a time, but now hybrids began to appear, causing a great many variations never before seen. Fades, despite their ties to these negative traits, are not inherently evil or bad, they simply personify the extreme of that emotional state as it makes up their very being. A Fade of Greed hordes like no tomorrow, where Gluttony is about consuming all they can. Yet their personalities can vary beyond that, depending on Rank.
• Sprites: Shards that have Cracked and are drawn into the Elder Plane become Sprites over time, dead beings that are defined by their emotional state while alive. Were they filled with joy, honor, good will towards all? Were they selfless and righteous? Were they innocent despite it all? If so their Karma is Positive, and they become a Sprite. There are seven types of emotions that impact Sprites, being Honor, Joy, Love, Passion, Righteousness, Innocence, Tranquility.
