Chapa gave a wide yawn as he sat, waiting, for the match to start. High above him, he could spot the familiar form of his vulture companion, and he snorted as he recalled his earlier attempts at getting her "opinion" on the competition. Vita had remained tight-lipped about it and had only given him an amused, playful look before taking to the sky. Clearly, he would get no help from her in this.

Oh well, her visions would probably count as cheating anyway... or at least, that's what he decided to tell himself.

Shaking his head, the bright-colored lion perked up as he noticed his opponent approaching. It was time to see how he'd do in the Sky Ceremony -- time to see if he could live up to what his father did the year previous.

Gadane was second-guessing his plan to enter the Sky Ceremony but he had a particular goal in mind, outside of reaching the top.. he just wasn't sure it was going to work out.. and finding the pool of combatants included a bunch of scruffy-maned youngsters was off-putting. Thankfully, though his opponent was younger than him, it wasn't by much.

He was from the Bird Clan, though.. it was perfect.

Or.. maybe not. But.. that would be a worry for later.

So he offered a smile and nod to his opponent.. and leaped into action.

Gadane goes first! First move to follow.

Move: Hit!
Count: 1/3 hits

Striking first was not a strategy that always worked but Gadane was willing to gamble on it. For him, it actually paid off and his first blow landed on his target- though he was far from being able to pin the colorful lion outright. He would never be that skilled at this sort of thing. His early success bolstered his confidence .. but it also distracted him from the possibility of retaliation.

He'd actually managed to hit Chapa, that was already kind of a win.

Move: Hit!
Count: 1/3 hits

He hadn't been expecting that first strike, and Chapa let out an "oof!" as he was hit, stumbling back a few steps but managing to stay relatively on his feet. Good thing too, because he didn't want to go down that easily.

He lowered himself down into a crouch in the hopes of solidifying his center of gravity a bit more. It seemed like they were equally matched so far, so he'd have to keep on his toes if he wanted to get the upper paw.

With narrowed eyes, he whipped his paw around and landed a hit as well.

Even though he saw the paw coming for him, Gadane couldn't avoid it and was startled by the force behind it- and encouraged by it. It had been a long time since he was a play-fighting cub but this wasn't as hard to get into as he had thought it might be. If they stayed this close together, it could be decided really quickly, too.. he just had to make sure he wasn't the first one to mess up, one mistake could lose the match.

Stumbling back from the blow, he reached out and returned it. And this time, he was watching for what would follow and imagined he could plan a counter. Maybe he wasn't going to be bad at this.

Maybe.

Move: Hit
Count: 2/3 hits

This time, he had braced himself a little better for the hit, having seen the paw coming but knowing that he wouldn't be getting out of the way soon enough. Instead, he decided to try something... a little different.

Chapa let out a grunt as he swung in and outright headbutted the other male. It maybe wasn't the most graceful thing he had ever done, and he was sure that he was going to regret the crick in his neck later, but for now, he was hoping that it would give him an edge.

Assuming he didn't lose his balance and end up being the one pinned instead anyway.

Move: Miss
Count: 2/3 hits

Gadane was watching but he wasn't expecting Chapa to come full-force, head-first at him the way that he did. Being ready to counter worked against him and he completely failed to brace against the weight of the other lion coming at him. Thrown off balance, he let himself drop to the ground rather than get his feet tangled up and lose right then. If Chapa was quick, he could pin him.. but if Gadane was quicker, he could still roll away..!

Move: Hit and a win!
Count: 3/3 hits

Honestly, that headbutt had been a gamble, and one that only sometimes worked whenever he or his siblings tried it in mock fights, but it worked now. Perhaps it was due to this being a new opponent, or maybe he'd just gotten lucky. Either way, his tackle had paid off, and Chapa was quick to seize the moment.

Pushing himself up, he threw out his paws and landed them squarely atop the other lion in a pin. Now he just needed to hold on and hopefully keep his grip on the other until they gave in.

Trying to keep his weight as centered as he could, Chapa grunted as he held on tight.

Gadane tried to roll smoothly away so the fight count continue but Chapa was quicker than him and the attempt served only to make sure he was caught at the most awkward angle possible. He, of course, struggled against his brightly colored opponent and hoped he could brute-force his way out of his predicament.. but it was useless. So he ultimately yielded, heaving a great sigh and glancing quickly towards any onlookers, hoping not to see a certain few faces.

"You win," he said.

Well, this was embarrassing. His only hope now was that Chapa would win.. but he would be happy as long as he didn't go on to lose against one of the scruffy-maned youngsters who got mixed up in this. It would certainly make watching the rest of the tournament more interesting!

Chapa's ear flicked up as the other lion stopped struggling and sighed, conceding defeat. He won.... He won! Well, the first round, but it was still an accomplishment to him!

Moving himself off of Gadane, he smiled and helped nudge the male back to his feet. "I think it was pretty evenly matched though." What did one say after winning a duel like this? He actually wasn't sure. So instead he just nodded and said, "Good fight!"

Hopefully he would do just as well in the next round too.
