Flamepaw could do this, there wasn't a single doubt in her mind on that one. Rather than worry, she sat calmly waiting for that stoat to see its last day. Seeing her apprentice needed a bit more to get going, not that she blamed her at all, the dark shecat reacted.
Lowering her head she gave the younger cat a nuzzle on the side of her head whispering, "Keep your eyes closed, if it gets too tight for you to get a paw in front come back out. Strike with the paw, while it will bite you'll be able to kill it before it can do more than scratch. If you are really lucky, it'll be asleep. Listen and trust your whiskers." With that, she nudged the younger shecat again to encourage her to go in after the prey.
Idealy the thing would be asleep and she could kill it without a fuss. Otherwise, a little bite would be worth the reward. For both of them, naturally. Already she could see the younger cat dragging that rodent back to the kill pile with her head held high.

Flamepaw hesitated a moment longer before swallowing and nodding. "Ok.." she said softly before slinking forward. She paused at the entrance to the burrow and waited a moment. Again she scented the air, the smell stronger from down there. It was definitely in there. But it was also narrow and small. Would she really be able to fit?
Deciding to trust her mentor, Flamepaw pushed inward into the burrow. The opening was wide enough to get her small lithe frame through but the farther down she went the maore narrow it seemed to go. Each pawstep was careful, doing her best to remain as silent as she could be. She closed her eyes as Shadowsong had said and stopped, letting the scents take over. She felt the sides of the burrow brush against her whiskertips, the smell of the rodent getting closer and closer. She knew she could proceed another half a paw step or so before she'd really be stuck. But she tried.
Finally she reached the point where she couldn't quite fit anymore, her rear haunches and tail still outside the burrow but it was close. Slowly she stopped, almost holding her breathing to see if the critter stirred yet or not. Already questions swarmed her mind. When should she strike? Now? Later? Would the creature smell her and run the other way? Had it already done so?
Trusting her instincts, Flamepaw pushed it all aside and lashed out with her paw where she thought the creature would be, feeling her claws sink into flesh. Instantly she curled her toes, hooking her claws in attempt to not let it escape. It reared around and latched onto her paw. She let out a startled cry before shoving her head forward and sinking her teeth into whatever part of the animal she could feel. For what felt like several long moments it wriggled and writhed in pain, screeching.
And then all fell silent.

Shadowsong laid down casually grooming her left paw with one ear cocked towards Flamepaw. No sounds but the birds calling above and bugs making their constant racket. The breeze was just right, only thing missing was more sun and this would be a perfect spot.
All couldn't be perfect, she supposed. Continuing her grooming, Shadowsong worked on her paw then brought it up to wash her face. Paw in mid motion stilled when she heard Flamepaw cry out. Thats when she put her paw down and moved into a crouching position.
Ears fully trained, she watched what she could see of the other cat's red tail and listened hard. Sounds of struggling echoed in her ears, but that was drowned out by one smug thought. The sound was far too high and small to be Flamepaw's.
Once the sound stopped, she finally sat up but remained tensed. 'come on' she thought 'come on out Flamepaw' When the mental urging didn't see to drag the younger cat out, she chirped at her. "Lets see your prize." Of course the other cat caught the prey, more was the question of if she got hurt doing it. Technique would get better with time, but this was a win she wanted the other cat to have so badly.
And a small part of her wanted it too. Stoat deserved it.
