The pride was quiet. Well, no place with so very many lions concentrated could be quiet, so perhaps the better word was content. The strange goings on had ceased, although rumor had it some fish monster goddess was still hanging out in the watering hole for reasons only she knew, and nothing was amiss with the ruling monarch or her family. Lions could relax and have their cubs in peace, the cubs grew into adults who then contributed to the pride and the cycle of life continued ever onward.

And yet Nyeusi was restless.

She knew the Great Lion had blessed them all, she knew He had not abandoned his favor ever since Shangyue had been overthrown, and she knew her own family was doing well. Great Lion knew her cubs by Him had prospered.

But something wasn't quite normal. Nyeusi wasn't certain it was wrong, but it was definitely different. Like a storm about to break, maybe. But if so, she didn't think this was anything to do with the pride, not like when Shangyue had murdered his way to the top. This felt personal. Frustrated, the black lioness was seeking someone to help her figure things out. Not the Queen, of course, she was not such a rank to seek that aid. Nor the Shaman, for she had the feeling this was nothing of Lailah's domain. Her parents would be of no help, nor did she wish to seek an elder's opinion.

So she found herself outside of Rive's den.

After his daughter had been taken and after the long trek to save her, Rive had returned home with an underlying sense of anxiety that took much too long to shake. For what felt like ages he had been suspicious of every shadow and every rogue that lurked on the borders. While he hunted he spent extra time sniffing out scents even though he knew, really, that it wasn't his job.

At long, long last, he felt some sense of normalcy returning to he and his. The faith he had in the muses, most of all the moon that stared down upon his new home, settled over him like a protective blanket. Peace was once again with him and he had little by little allowed the tension between his shoulder blades to lax and diminish. He wasn't sure if he would ever feel one hundred percent at ease with himself but he had to have faith, he knew. After all, was that not the point?

He roused himself like he did every morning, took a long, deep stretch of the legs, and meandered out of the den expecting nothing to be out of place - only, it was. Nyeusi, even for all that they had come to some agreed companionship, rarely sought him out unless something was amiss or necessary. It was just her nature. Everything was done with a purpose. At once, his brows rose and he paused, half illuminated in the shine of the sun and half cast in the shadow of his den.

"What's wrong?"

The black lioness started, surprised to see Rive even though she was the on who had sought him out. She’d been so lost in thought she’d forgone awareness of her surroundings. To cover her annoyance at his sudden appearance, she blew out a breath in frustration.

“I don’t know,” she hissed. Nyeusi couldn’t stand still, stalking around in circles as she tried to assemble her thoughts.

“Something. Something is not right.” That was all she knew, but it was like an itch beneath her fur that she simply couldn’t reach.
