THE NOTION
From the proud halls of High Reaches Hold comes a well-established family, rich in history and noble in name, who has never known the sting of want or the discomfort of strife. They have earned their place in the ranks of the elite, and still yet strive to achieve further success and renown.
This, however, is not that family.
They're a more common kind of holdfolk, simply trying to get by as best they can in the shadow of the weyr--their family is certainly large, but that's about the only notable thing about them just yet, aside from the throw of circumstance that landed them their children.
Six in total, when they had expected merely three or four. What's a family to do when you wind up with twins out of the blue?
THE DEETS
first off, the family roster!
- parents : [npc] holdfolk
- oldest brother : [placeholder/npc] not a twin. bronzerider, impressed before thread returned.
- twins 1-4 : potentially quadruplets depending on how people want to play this out, but at least two sets of twins. candidates.
- youngest sibling : not a twin. also a candidate!
THE PLOT
Years ago, the kids' NPC older brother manages to get Searched, and goes and Impresses a Bronze--which he brings back to show his family at the first available opportunity. The kids are brought face to face with the possibility of a wildly different life than the ones they currently seem set to lead; surely it's possible, too, because their brother has broken free and become a dragonrider. It's a lot for them to process all at once, really. Any dragon at all would be impressive to a bunch of kids, but a Bronze is absolutely mind-blowing, the perfect combination of wondrous new status and a soulmate all in one. Unsurprisingly, the combination of the sheer awe of a dragon combined with the potential excitement and idealized/romantic image of a dragonrider's life that's put together from their brother's stories makes the rest of the batch of kids want to be candidates desperately. The next time a searchrider is spotted, they practically stampede over to meet them--and sure enough, even though it takes two trips, they're all successfully searched, sent off to the weyr to begin their training. Although being a candidate is harder than they thought, the potential payoff is still more than enough to keep them in the game--
--and then Thread comes back, and they realize that there are very, very real consequences, including death.
What makes them stay? Pressure, determination, who knows. They're at least sticking around for one Hatching--just one, maybe, or until they manage to Impress. If they go back to the Hold, what do they have to look forward to? In the end, it's up to them, but they've got a lot of work ahead of them, and that dreamy, exciting life doing whatever they want with their imaginary dragon is only a fantasy.
Now, they have to pull it together and get themselves through their stay at the weyr in one piece. But who knows? Maybe they'll actually be half decent at it after all.
