SALE OF
THE
CENTURY

The PSA opens with the Narrator inside the Set of Wheel of Fortune Daytime.

*History*
Narrator: Hiya, its the Narrator. Its good to be back on the Wheel of Fortune Set as today, I'm about to talk about another exciting Game from the 1980s...
Sale of the Century!

But we need to go back further to 1969 as that's when the World was introduced to this game. The Black & White Greyscale version of Sale of the Century lasted until 1974. However, like the B&W version of Supermarket Sweep, NBC wiped and reused the Master Tapes they were recorded onto for their other shows & is considered Lost Media as of current.

During 1980, Australian TV Media Baron, Reg Grundy brought the license to the show and it became one of the longest running shows in the Pacific & in 1982, the show was resurrected in the United States & premiered on NBC from January 1983 to March 1989 (8 Months before Disney's The Little Mermaid Original Animated Universe Changed History), while the Nighttime Syndication Version lasted from January 1985 to September 1986.

The Residing Host was Jim Perry, who is best known for hosting Card Shark from 1978 to 1981 and Match Game 90's Pilot Series known as Match Game 89. Both Match Game Classic & Card Sharks (Perry) can be seen on the Buzzr Network nowadays.

During Sale of the Century, there were 3 residing hostesses. Its worth mentioning that Scrabble is Sale of the Century's Sister Show which also aired on NBC.

SALE OF
THE
CENTURY

The PSA opens with the Narrator inside the Set of Wheel of Fortune Daytime.

*Gameplay*
Narrator: The Game is played with 3 Players, each starting with a Bankroll Score of $20 and they would build up their score by answering General Knowledge Questions.
Correct Answers were worth $5 while incorrect answers cost $5. After a few questions, an instant bargain would be shown as like the Fame Board, 3 are shown each game.
Instant Bargains gave the player in the lead to buy prize...

(Example: NBC Memory Recording 1985 Daylight
*Wish to party all day or all night? Well, now you can with a Sharp Stereo System with CD and Cassette along with Radio FM and AM. $900 but on Sale of the Century, its yours for only $5.*)

The player would then be present with the offer and its starting discount cost. The Host would then add additional offers such as Reduced Cost or a Cash Bonus. If the Player chooses to buy the prize, it was theirs regardless of the outcome but a Player can choose not to do so if he or she wanted which left his or her score unchanged. If there was a tie between 2-3 players, then the player who rang in won the item. By May 1984, Sale Surprise Offers were added as one last deal which would have an additional cash bonus should player accept or decline an instant bargain.

By 1986, an Instant Cash was also added, the player leading would choose one of 3 boxes containing a Cash Prize. So how I plan to do is that 1 box will contain a Cash Prize starting at $1,000 and increasing by $100 while the other 2 had $100, the player would their first place lead would cost them $10 but decreases until a player accepts or declines.

After the Instant Bargain and Instant Cash Segments, more Questions are asked then came the Fame Game.
The Host would then present clues to a person, place or thing with more detail as the question was read. A Wrong answer would lock that player out for the remainder of the question with no score penalties. A Correct answer would have the player pick one of 9 spaces on the Fame Board. Each had 3 Space Types, Money Cards that add to the Score, Cash Bonuses or Prizes.
The Money Cards came in $10, $15 or $25 values.

The remaining questions were asked after that and in 1984 was the Speed Round. After that, the player with the highest score wins the game.
In case of a Tie, a Tiebreaker Question was asked.

SALE OF
THE
CENTURY

*Endgames 1-3: Shopping Round*
Narrator: After the Core Game, one of 3 different endgames were played.
The First was the Shopping Round where the player can use his or her score to buy where 3 Prizes are shown at a Discounted Cost resulting in the Player Retiring should the buy a prize but had the option of banking their winnings to win another game. An Overall Score of $500 got them the Grand Prize while $750 gave them everything including a Cash Jackpot. The number of prizes shown depended on either the Daytime or Nighttime version was used.
Since I'm not using Returning Champion Ruleset, I may discard this First Version of the Endgame.

*Endgames 2-3: Memory Round*
Narrator: In 1984 during the Daytime Version and 1985 of the Nighttime Version, the Winners Board was used.
The player would need to win the game for a shot at 10 different prizes. 7 of them had prizes, 1 Grand Prize and 2 Cash Bonuses as it was played in the same style as Classic Concentration's Winner's Circle Endgame. A player would need to match all the prizes to win the game plus the Cash Jackpot which is how I would do it. Like Classic Concentration, I would use a 25 or 30 Space Board with 3 Wild Cards.

*Endgames 3-3: Big Money Round*
Narrator: In December 1987, The Big Money Winner Round was introduced where a Prize was won after winning the base game then played a Bonus Game for a Cash Bonus. First the player selected one of 3 envelopes, Red, Yellow or Blue with 6 questions. 4-5 Correct answers were needed to win. A Player can choose to pass a question and return to it later. However, a player had 2 attempts to clear this endgame. Clearing this 3rd Endgame resulted in a $5,000 Cash Bonus win.

Narrator: As you can see, Sale of the Century was and has been, like Press Your Luck and Pyramid, predates Who Wants to be a Millionaire.
See you on the sales floor for that game.
