My older brother learned German & since I was a kid he used it around me & to talk to me so I can basically understand it, but I've found over the years that speaking and reading/writing German are 2 VERY different animals.
The extent of my written German ability equates to a few short grammatically wrekt tial sentences that basically just say "Ich kann spreche kaum Deutsch, aber mein Japanisch is besser" (& I KNOW my spelling/capitalization is all jacked up but it's been over a decade since I got German spellcheck to work ugh I'M SORRY) which I usually follow in English with the answer to "How many languages do you speak?"- none, but I'm doing my best with English" which tends to cause more confusion sweatdrop
The "Jein" option in the poll absolutely SENT ME bc it's like, the bane of my existence. I've heard it sooo much in response to my attempts at speaking German rofl
I'd love to speak it more accurately bc it makes me feel nostalgic, but my focus when studying another language was Japanese & learning 2 new languages side by side with no immersion/exposure outside of the internet learning solo environment is quite a quest, oof.
When I do see my brother these days he does still use it sometimes, and I can still reply to him in German as long as I don't try to say too much or explain too much. it comes easily to me and I can always understand him but I got into the habit of replying in English to express myself more which turned into just a bilingual convo of him speaking German & me replying in English without missing beats, but it wrecked my German speaking skills gonk
From studying Japanese yet ending up better with German than Japanese, I've found I'm better at immersion learning with a language partner but I live in rural Florida so IDK how to find IRL speakers to use it with since my written German is a garbage fire. Any time I've tried writing in German I get asked in English "what are you trying to say? It's OK to just use English" emo
