I have a mess of computer issues, as usual. One is even more about Gaia than me.

And as usual, I fail at making threads that get attention, let alone answers. stressed

Proof:
(listed oldest to newest, under the dotted line are the active threads, and yes, I have deleted many of the bumps I made, I bump no more than once a day though.)
PLEASE DO NOT POST IN THE THREAD THAT ARE LISTED BEFORE THE DOTTED LINE

CD and DvD burner issues With disscussion!
Much help needed
Dial up download speeds - Mostly how long it took

-------------------

The active fails, the ones I've been bumping. Never really bumped the others. Apparently bumping these, even at different times, is useless and a wait of time anyway.

Fx 2 problems
Incorrect login errors - the Gaia related one
Can't update windows
Making photo CD play in DvD player

Discuss:
  • How to make a thread that lasts.
  • Meanies in the CT that require you to bold every other thing, and spell out every insignificant item or else they will set off a chain of people asking pointless irrelevant questions, requiring you to make a new thread, only to find out you forgot something else, that may or may not have been in the first thread. And that even when you answer they just continue in a horrid cycle of discussion and pointless irrelevant questions.
  • My thread-making mistakes.
  • How I remembered to add a poll to this thread.
  • Why putting as much info and every little bit of info you can imagine into the first post, you still get pointless questions, either because they didn't read, skipped over, or thought of something more irrelevant that you thought of.
  • How unfortunate it is that when disguising a question as discussion so that you can put it into the CT:TT where the nice nerds hide, it actually gets discussed, instead of answered, no matter how hard you try to stear it. crying

sooo....you asked for help, and no one replied? Maybe you should try a more computer based forum, rather than gaia.

yea i gotta say, if you want to b***h about stupid life s**t... or join the ongoing GD contest of "who's life is more ******** up". Yea gaia is the place to make a topic. But if you are looking for serious answers to serious questions, you prob wanna pick a forum website that's more computer dedicated. Not that there arn't a TON of nerds here... it's just most of them are distracted by PRON and shiny things.

download speeds are based on your bandwidth. most internal browser downloaders use 1/8 or so of available bandwidth, leaving you room to still surf. if you have a "download accelerator", its pretty much either downloading the same file in parts at the same time, it saves time but kills your bandwidth. if you want your "downloader" to download at top speeds you should adjust the settings to think you have a T1 or higher connection. but you probably wouldnt be able to surf when downloading.

I well used to leaving the room for page loading on certain sites, or if I have many pages open. I've long since learned to have downloads going when I'm off the computer. Basically, an attempt to use most of the few drops of bandwidth I get.

    Tell me domokun

PS I'm using Free Download Manager. --> http://www.freedownloadmanager.org/

PPS I'm on 56K dial-up with connect speeds from 28K-40K. Download speeds around 1.9K-4K.

Oh, and about other forums. I've tried. Took a year to learn that I should build a new computer, use my old hdd, and use hijack this to kill all bad stuffs. (The build anew is because the graphic card died while waiting a year for me to get told about the hijack this thing.)
Which didn't even work, because that hdd would work in this build without being reformatted. (I FINALLY figured out how to slave the drive...)

Which is another reason why I think it's more about me and how I post than where I post or what I post.

By yes, porn, or more specifically, furry porn.

*doesnt want to download that crappy downloader to learn*

i run most of my downloading through bearshare, so, using a download accelerator is unnecessary. i might look at it out of boredom though......

also, slaving a drive is as easy as moving a pin on the outside of the drive. xD
    PostPosted: Tue Jun 03, 2008 8:56 pm

Ya... I, magically, was under the impression that it had to do with jumper placement... and that lack of a thing to tell me where the jumper should be would make slaving the drive difficult. I used trial and error to figure out how to slave the drive, and it only took a few tries. Sad that it took a year and a half just to get to that point from when I realized that my computer (the old, currently slaved hdd) was unusable. (corrupted file errors suck balls, especially when a file avast needs to use on access gets one of those errors...)

yeah sometimes your posts are a little hard to understand sweatdrop but i know nothing about computers and can usually get the answers i need on specialised forums, so maybe its a combination of the 2

Dicks in your first topic were wrong: Computers with enabled routing protocols actually learn from previous experiences when networking and learn to communicate faster over the network and even make repairs when pieces of the network go down. Without such AI, the internet would be impossible to maintain. Considering that the number of such "nodes" is approaching the number of neurons in the human brain, the network between them, aka: internet, could actually be sentient. Some theorize that artificial life will be born from the internet itself.

Dicks in the second/third topic don't realize that the 12kb is due to compression of text and images during download. Your regular rate is 5-6; the 12 is simply optimization of data on higher network layers and is not your actual bandwidth. Transfer speed > Bandwidth.

I get the whole "can't switch tab" issue in firefox, as well. It seems to be a terribly un-optimized part of the program.

Windows update won't run very well on dial-up. It may be a timeout (due to your slow connection speed) or possibly a blocked port.

As far as the slide CD's, in windows movie maker, you're doing it wrong or something like that. Honestly, that one has to be your fault. Either you're moving the source files around, or your output folder is read only or SOMETHING. I really can't think of any other way to do it.

Next time, if you have discussion, ask here. If you don't, ask here or here.

Whoa, cool. So it's possible that based on someone's internet activity, the internet would find fault and try to kick the person away? o.o

I get the whole "can't switch tab" issue in firefox, as well. It seems to be a terribly un-optimized part of the program.

Ever open too much and have your computer start to lag? Maybe just one program that needs some time to load, so it won't let you click anything in it's window? Fx does that to me periodically, but when I click a different tab or bottom/link anyway, the whole window goes white, except for the top, with the [] _ X and the title of the page. Then I wait, and it usually fixes itself, but sometimes it doesn't, and even when it does it takes a while.

That's the odd part. It's before I even see what updates I get to choose from that I get that error. I won't have anything else loading, and I've tried a lot.

Not messing with source files, not sure what you mean by output folder. If you mean where I'm saving it, I was trying for my desktop, which isn't read only.

I don't quite get the question. Though I believe a number of layer 3 networking devices are quite capable of selecting what traffic they "think" should be allowed past, based on their knowledge of the network. Think of them like intelligent gatekeepers. High end routers, like the cisco 800 series, already "guard" schools, universities, businesses, and other networks. It isn't a firewall. Firewalls say "this looks bad". They're actually intelligent enough to say "This has no business going in this direction".

    Internet = 7 layers.
Physical, Data Link, Network, Transport, Session, Presentation, Application.

Application layer is what you actually SEE (highest layer), physical layer is the wires themselves (lowest layer). Data goes through processing in all the other 5 layers between when you see it in your browser and when it actually sends a signal over the wire. The "speed limit" of the lower levels is 5KBps for dial-up, meaning that no matter what, you won't get an ACTUAL speed of more than 5KBps. Fortunately, the other five layers compress the data so that more data fits into a smaller packet. (Yes, it's literally called a packet). The packet has a smaller size than the data itself. This allows more data to be transferred in packets that take up less data, due to compression. (I know that explanation was redundant, but it should make sense). The speed you see in your download window (11kb) is how much data you've received AFTER it's been decompressed. So here's how it works. (All of this in one second).

11KB gets put into a 5KB packet, is transmitted at 5KBps to you, arrives, your computer decompresses the 11KB, and displays that you've received 11KBps (11KB in one second). Your CONNECTION speed was still only 5KBps.

Okay, I get it, so how to I make it compress that well the whole time instead of just for the first half of the last mb?

This is the odd part, I can do other things just fine while Fx is having a stroke, and the task manager shows no strain, apart from the cpu usage being above 10%, even the coretemp program shows the cpu temps as normal, or just barely high. (CoreTemps spike withe cpu usage, rather useful, a bit higher than normal lately, and occasionally 13% in cpu usage, not sure why either are high.)

I didn't think anyone used those, although through my short explorations, I couldn't figure out how something became a meme, or how a convo was actually held there. :/

@metallic: if your only running on a 28-40kbps connection then your going to have considerably less speed than trevors explanation using a 56kbps dial-up connection. as for the random burst of information at the end of your download im think it was just some temp. files left over that the computer threw together at the last second. that, or your download program has a flaw in it. your download speeds will only go as fast as your network allows.

    crying

B-but my interwebs hates me!!! gonk

Yesterday, I kept getting a wrong pass thing, when I had the right password!!!!! crying

Just be happy I didn't have a hammer near by, this case would have a few more dents.

Like many pass word errors, some servers are busy messages (audio, like the automated voice when you dial an inactive number), many pass errors, a few call didn't do through things (audio), and one or two connects in between that lasted about 5 minutes before I was disconnected.

See? I have proof that the ISP servers are seneint and hate me!!! cry

    [/whining]

Still, isn't there at least something I can try?
