Roleplay Description

This is a mainly un-GM'd (Game Master) roleplay thread. While there will be GMs that control some of the non-player elements of the world, much of the actual play will be decided by you, the players. However, players may petition the GMs at anytime to initiate bigger, more-involved adventures. Feel free to play and interact with the world as you like. Just remember that, on occasion, the GMs may interfere in their own amusing ways.

In addition, players may be promoted into GMs after some time playing as regular playable characters. These attentive and creative players with in-game experience need only ask any of the GMs for consideration.

Fredric "Fritz" Lang
Played By: WiskersThCatfish (Game Master)

Fritz is a herbalist by trade, but a scientist by nature. This has proved to be an odd combination over the course of his lifetime, because as a man who's job relies on him making balms and salves to maintain people's health, he always found the exciting part of his job was pushing the envelope and experimenting. He couldn't very well ask any of his patients to try out his unstable concoctions, so the only logical test subject is of course himself. He is prone to irregular fits of blindness, deafness, decreased IQ, mood-swings, severely decreased libido (although already not a very sexual person), hyperactivity, and rapid hair-loss (even though it always seems to grow back by the next morning).

All of these symptoms are the result of Fritz trying to immunize himself to nearly every contractible disease he could find. This proved to be a very bad idea though, as he soon found himself utterly unable to interact with other humans. Huge cancerous bulbs were growing on his face, and beginning to block his air passage. In a last ditch effort to stave off everything he had subjected himself to, practically dragging himself from town to town, he was eventually able to find and contract lycanthropy.

His genetic structure altered, and his body made super-resilient, Fritz was restored to his capable old self. Only occasionally does his status give way to the onslaught of degenerative viruses and infections that his former body could not handle. (On a d20, a roll below three declares Fritz afflicted for the day, a random pick between one and seven determines what he is afflicted with from the above symptoms.) Of course, once a month for two days on either side of the full moon, Fritz removes himself from society to live up to his decision to become a werewolf.

Fritz is a lively, and springy man in his late twenties. He seems the type to wear spectacles, but never has them on, and always wears the well worn-in clothing of a gentry-man with... a bit of a problem. He's good at finding and mixing natural ingredients to make useful consumable items, and also sewing.

Corinth Alekksander Trimatsaa
Played By: Sentama Lin (Game Master)

Corinth is a faithful member of a local convent to a deity charged with the energies of life. His main duties in the convent is to pick up goods in the various stores of the city and to tend to the more-minor patients of the convent -- citizens of the city who visit the convent to be treated of wounds and sicknesses.

The community, on occasions, find the members of the convent to be a trifle annoying. They spread their messages of life and law with the same fervour as the Witnesses of the Great Jehovah -- a group similar to theirs, but a lot less liked. Sometimes, the members do go around the residential districts to spread the good word and, oftentimes, will talk about it at any chance they could. Still, the community as a whole find their presence to be beneficial -- providing business to the fabric makers and the herbalists of the city and, in addition, treating the sick of the city.

Corinth isn't as zealous as the other members of the convent; he still spreads around his deity's word, but not in the extreme (going from house to house, etc.) as the other members. Perhaps that's why he has never ascended to higher ranks and learned any higher arts. Still, he is very good at his job (he makes bandages and salves from fabrics and herbs and other things he buys). In addition, he has learned some minor magick from his superiors which, in essence, works by transferring life energies of one target to another target.

Bustling Metropolis Te'l Darotha

***

A metropolis of all peoples, races, and classes, Te'l Darotha is a cultural melting pot of technicians, scholars, magicians, artisans, criminals, aristocrats, trainers, and people of all kinds -- a perfect place to get information, jobs, education, or, perhaps, fame for the beginning adventurer.

***

The Metropolis of Te'l Darotha is situated in a valley surrounded by fields of green and spots of wildflowers. It started as an abandoned Elvish fortress rebuilt into a trading town by humans and other races who traversed through the area. Eventually, travelers chose to settle there, slowly expanding the population. Over time it has flourished into a bustling metropolis and has expanded beyond the valley where it started. Luckily, the bits of past nature can still be found on the city's outskirts and, on occasion, inside the city itself. Indeed it spans a large area and its streets are often winding and more often than not confusing for the first-time visitor. Thankfully, a series of cable cars, suspended in the air, have made travel between areas of the city much easier than traversing the streets.

Upon entering Te'l Darotha, one notices the primary feature of the busy metropolis: the seemingly-harried movement of people of different races, genders, classes, and professions. Milkmaids traveling to and from the various taverns and houses of the residential district; scholars, apprentices, and artisans traveling from place to place discussing all manner of topic or perhaps delivering various goods; fighters, hunters, and journeymen hustling about for information or jobs from various clients; and the lay people of the city, minding their own business, could all be found traversing from building to building and street to street.

Te'l Darotha is divided into three main districts. It is worth noting that these districts were not decided by the leaders of the city; the districts, in a sense, sort of formed themselves as more and more people began to migrate and settle into the metropolis. The residential district is -- by its nature -- the area of land where many of the city's citizens live. One can find any number of artisan -- blacksmith, baker, tailor, cobbler, and others -- in the Artisan Square; it's the place to go when one wants customised items. For the more everyday mundane purchases the Commercial District contains all the shops -- from weapon stores selling ammos for revolvers, rifles, and shotguns to libraries selling copies of ancient tomes and other intellectual wares -- from which all citizens can buy their required sundries of the day. Scattered around the town, in all districts, are various guilds, inns, and taverns where information may be gathered and jobs may be obtained.

While the city is divided into districts, the actual boundaries are shadier than the definition. The formal boundaries defined by the current government is, at their best, a guess, at its worse, laziness. Te'l Darotha, over the centuries, has assimilated, acculturated, and -- when it wasn't possible to do both -- built around actual settlements, absorbing them into the city's life. Spots of assimilated-settlement architecture -- sometimes thatch-roofed cottages, sometimes wooden buildings, sometimes old and rotting fishing docks, or maybe patches of farmland-turned-small garden -- could still be seen as one traveled through the city. While some of the absorbed settlements prospered and flourished, other parts were not as fortunate.

As with all cities, Te'l Darotha has its shadier areas. Crime is often an issue -- particularly in the shadier parts of the districts. Thankfully the crime in this city is comparable with others of its type -- and definitely not as rampant as other bigger towns. Some discretion, however, should be taken whenever traversing the poorer slums, guilds actively involved in crime (though they won't be named), or other dark areas (unless, of course, one is the harbinger of such shady dealings).

Nevertheless Te'l Darotha is a big hub full of many people and opportunities for all types of folk. While it's sheer size is daunting, the amount of people, the types of people, the various guilds, and the constant traveling of products, goods, and gossip make this town a central place for information, job-gathering, and professional (or otherwise) educational/advancement needs.

World Physics

***

Machines and Magic are the opposite, and cannot perfectly exist in the vicinity of each other.

***

The Crash Course (In A Nutshell)

In the very simplest of laymen's terms, machines and magic are the opposite, and cannot perfectly exist in the vicinity of each other. This doesn't mean that no magician can handle a machine, and no machinist can handle a magic object, but indeed neither can operate and full capacity as long as they are doing the less-desired activity.

The Longer Story

Our world is governed by the laws of physics. These mandates define the smallest bindings that hold the pieces of ourselves together, dictate what keeps us tethered to the ground, and explain the various states of matter. However it's never discussed how magic simply defies the logic behind these things. Indeed, only since the coming of popular technology such as steam engines has the difference between physics and metaphysics even been touched upon.

There are in fact two sets of laws, equal but opposite, that dictate how all of these things work.

Example Scenario

This wizard can use the Metaphysical-Law of the Creation of Matter From Nothing.

This machine actively uses the Physical-Law of Conservation of Energy to build energy for a steam train.

The wizard decides one day to ride a steam train, this is normally not always allowed, but we'll say, this one time. The wizard has a magical aura, a metaphysical residue which stays with him no matter where he travels, one of the many side-effects of practicing magic.

This residue naturally alters the laws of physics, and because of this, the mechanisms in the engine don't work as well. Since physics is what allows the engine to apply energy to the train, and physics are being tampered with on a general level around the wizard, the engine has to work harder to do what it's supposed to do.

Next, on his ride, the wizard gets hungry, and decides to conjure an apple or two. He loves apples.

He casts his spell, only to find his hand completely absent of an apple's presence. As we mentioned before, all of these laws are equal but opposite, so naturally, the running engine is to blame this time.

If a weak metaphysical occurrence were to happen in the vicinity of a working physical act, like an apple-conjuring spell cast next to a running steam engine, the spell simply would not produce results, or may produce odd, undesired, or unpredictable results. There is no such thing as physical residue, so instead this occurrence is explained by the lack of metaphysical residue around objects that implement physical laws.
