It's a gold sink because the Gaia lotto caused too much inflation in the MP. Seeing as we don't want anymore gold being pumped into the economy, it's a pretty smart move.

I personally think the items are too "over the top" to really make an avatar look good, but that's my opinion.

Either way, the shop was realeased to try and combat inflation.

Yeah, I don't think I'm going to be spending anymore gold on it... it's sort of annoying having to check to see if you won or lost - just give me a damn notification instead of having to remember to go click on it.

Gaia used to be mostly a free site.
Now look at it.
The monthly collectables were a GREAT idea. I know they made killings off those.
But did they really need to add the gaia cash? e.e
