Alchemy V

Professor Juan Amorocho

Nestled in the far corner of the fourth floor, the Alchemy class can be found behind a large oak door revealing a dimly lit, and brief tunnel passage way and lead into the rest of the wide circular room. Tremendous windows lined the walls to give birth to the section dedicated to herbology, which also lined the walls and flowering beds filled with a myriad of plants blossom in the sunlights dazzling rays. Broad desks occupied the center and faced the professor's desk which sat directly in between the windows and the children; two cauldrons reside upon the wooden desks, adjacent to their wooden chair counter part. Traditionally, the hispanic alchemist could be found tending to the foliage, or otherwise seated behind his desk.

At the front of the class, the Hispanic professor with bronze glowing skin offered a generous smile to any student who passed under his door and entered the half-circular room. ”Welcome class to Alchemy V, I am Professor Juan Angel Amorocho, if that’s too hard to say, than Professor Angel, or just professor, will work all the same. Now, this year we’re going to study the Quintessence. The long sought for path that only few ever find can create a heaven on earth and in spirit, wherein, all of life’s secrets and turmoil are suddenly breathed with a new light, and everything that never made sense before suddenly does.

“This is a journey that every alchemist hopes to embark, I, myself, have travelled down this road as well, but it is a very rare truth that only sheds its light to the rarer few. In any case, it should be noted that this spiritual breakthrough is the reason why we have so many more powerful spells for good than there are dark magic. Of course, that is only a theory that has been rivaled for years. In any case, today, we’re going to learn a protective spell that was believed to have been created by Nikolaj Haster-Blandeu, a famed alchemist of the renaissance who claimed to have found the Quintessence, but had been murdered before he ever finished his book about it.

“This spell will actually transform your wand into a shield with a simple incantation, SKEW-dum, and there is no need for wand movement, the focus of this spell is entirely dependent on concentration and focus, and as such, this spell has had many reported findings that its strength and skill actually increase in dire and stressful situations. Once you’ve copied your notes, I’d like for you all to give it a go.”

Juan was casually lounging across the leather arm chair situated behind his desk, a wand carefully swayed in the air to tend to the foliage lined against the walls of the classroom. His alchemical book was left open to the page of today’s lesson with the page number sprawled across the chalk board while he waited to ensure if this class was, indeed, empty or not.

After a short break, Angel entered his classroom with a whimsical hop to his step and an apple in his hand. Crunching down through the skin of the apple, he took a seat at his desk and reclined leisurely in the seat as he waited for the class to start. With the flick of his wand, the classroom door swung open to allow the few students to enter.

Entering the classroom with long, swift strides, a callous and purposeful flick of his wand had led the description of a potion appear on his chalkboard while he waited for any students to gather at his class.

Dream Catch Potion- This potion needs to only sit on the bed stand at night; it records and encourages the witch or wizards dreams, and only works if concocted by that same witch or wizard. Dreams are often difficult to understand, but the records act as a means to remind the drinker of what’s truly important. Each vialed potion can only record one week’s worth of dreams.

”Welcome to your last year of alchemy, and your last year here at Hogwarts—I hope you had a brilliant summer. This year, we will be reviewing everything entirely for your NEWTS. There might be a bit spell casting at the end of the lesson, but for now, take out parchment and quill and copy down any notes you feel you might need, might have forgotten, or might have missed.

“Now, Alchemy is a branch of magic and an ancient science concerned with the study of the four basic elements, as well as the study of the transmutation of substances; it is thus intimately connected with potion-making, chemistry and transformation magic. Alchemy also concerns philosophy; alchemical literature is dominated by mystical and metaphysical speculation. The best known goals of the alchemists were the transmutation of common metals into Gold or Silver, the creation of a Panacea, a remedy that would cure all diseases and prolong life indefinitely and the discovery of a universal solvent; but some pursued the spiritual enlightenment of the soul. The Philosopher's Stone, a substance created by Nicolas Flamel can turn ordinary metal into pure gold, and produce the immortality-granting Elixir of Life." He turned on his heel, and withdrew his wand from his trousers and offered a simplistic wave across the chalk board. "Copy these notes down and that will conclude our lesson for the day, any questions?"

Analyzation: analyzing the properties of the substance you wish to transmute.

Reconstruction: reconstructing or recomposing the broken down ingredients into a new substance.

It was fairly easy and more than useful at times if the imagination was put to the test. Only once he was sure that every student had entered, he spun on his heel to address the class. ”Welcome back, today we’ll start with a quick warm up. One by one, come to the front of the class and demonstrate one spell you have learned while in this class.”

Once you’ve copied your notes, I’d like for you all to give it a go.”

Arriving to class, the Slytherin Prefect silently slipped into his desk, the same one he’d occupied for the last four years he’d had this class. This class, along with another small handful, was the rare few that had managed to keep the same professor throughout the entirety of his school career. He shrugged the thought off his shoulders; after all, this was his last year here, anyway. The events of this school now meant little to him, he’d be past these castle walls soon enough.

”Scutum,” he recited as he had had many times before, watching as his wand emit a pale white glow and transformed into a deft wooden shield.

As the professor of alchemy entered the classroom, he ushered a simple wave of his wand to create a flutter of his handwriting to appear on the chalkboard at the front of the class. Striding diligently across the rows of desks and chairs, Angel reached the front of his class and turned to meet his students. “Now, unbeknownst to many alchemists, the true reasons behind the study of alchemy was not only for science, but for spiritual ambition as well. Alchemists believe that there is a quintessence, where the Above can be created in the Below, thus, heaven on earth in spirit and mind. So, with that in mind, there was only a very small percentage of alchemists true to the ideal of discovering the truth of alchemy, which is why in ancient texts, it can be impossible to discern which ingredients is being used because of the basic, generic terms used for each items.

“All of this was to dissuade the callous and greedy of heart from discovering the truths behind alchemy, and it’s because of those wizards that we have spells like Expono to help identify what type of man you may be dealing with during experiments and such,

“This spell is quite exhausting and requires a keen sense of mind, but the wand movements and pronunciation are quite simple in comparison. A simple and gentle tap on the temple with your wand, and then guide the tip down towards the heart as you recite the incantation, ex-poe-NU.

The trick is to imagine yourself in the darkness, you can't see who your facing, but you know they're there, so use every bit of information you've ever seen or heard from them to help shift their body into the form that best represents their motives, their ambition in life. Now, I’d like you all to pair up, and give it a go. Keep in mind, it doesn’t always work, and oft times, the ethereal representation is a complete and exact copy of the original…”

Is there a distance requirement?: Must be in immediate distance
Are the effects lasting?: Only for several minutes
Anything else?: Spell works best upon the sleeping, or the unexpected (often does not work at all.)

Slytherin Prefect, Seventh Year

(meh, been so out of it. Weather messing me up. Sorry guys. I'll just say that Jess missed the first class, because something came up.)

Jessica scurried to catch the second lesson of her Alchemy professor -- not wanting to miss another lecture. It was bad enough that the orphanage had chosen that particular moment to deliver the rest of her possessions and go through all of the legal paperwork for the willowy redhead to be fully emancipated under wizard law. Of course, the result of that was that at the moment, she didn't have a home now.

Entering the classroom, the prefect wiped those thoughts completely out of her head. Jess needed to concentrate. Quickly bowing and taking her seat, Jess immediately pulled out parchment and quill to copy the notes on the board:

Something triggered in Jess' mind about a detail about Mars from her Astronomy class -- at low atmospheric pressure, water boils off the surface at 'normal' room temperature. Does that mean that this spell is actually increase the 'atmospheric pressure' on an object? The willowy redhead was curious.

As the thoughts pervaded Jess' thoughts, she stood ready to cast. Clearing her mind of everything except the task at hand, Jess pointed her Cypress wand at a beaker of water on the table. Suddenly, Jess flicked her wand upward, and then directed it back toward the beaker once more speaking with a clear voice, "Fran-GUU FRI-jus!"

The result was the water within the beaker turning to ice, expanding rapidly enough to shatter the glass beaker itself. Most of the glass in question was still stuck in the newly formed ice chuck, as if the ice snagged the majority of the shards of glass before it could completely be propelled away from the site of the casting event.

When Jess' spell was completed, green eyes turned toward Professor Amorocho and inquired, "Professor, does this spell actually increase the relative atmospheric pressure on the object cast?"

After writing down the information on the spell, a bit of worry seemed to furrow Jess' brow, What would this spell reveal about me? Would it be anything like my 'boggart' -- a representation of myself as a medusa? Jessica slightly shuddered at the thought. The willowy redhead did worry a bit on how others perceived her. Jess did want to be thought of as just being like the rest of her greedy and ambitious family. Trying in vain to clear her mind on those thoughts, Jess waited to see who'd she be paired with....
