The Earth, 2659 has become nothing more than a city, compressed by the fears of the outside world. Humans created robots to try and protect them from the ‘savages’ that lived outside the city walls that attacked constantly without relent. However years pass and fears of the ‘savages’ grew less and less, until they were just facts within a history book given to human children to learn. The robots were sent to live in one side of the city, humans disgusted to look upon them encase the fears of the savages came back. The city was divided into two parts, humans and robots lived separately. No contact was allowed. To cross over would have you placed under watch for the rest of your life, to make contact with the other side would mean expulsion to the unknown world outside and your fate would be at the hands of the savages. It’s rumoured that the air outside the city walls isn’t breathable for humans’ lungs.

She skidded along the wall on her hover-skateboard, avoiding touching it as she flipped around. A great big grey thing, it was the thing that separated the living quarters that were close to the robots. There were some open spaces, like the space she was going to now, where you could see over to the other side. You wouldn’t see anyone; everyone seemed to stay away, afraid to touch a robot like it had a contagious disease, so the opening spaces often were turned into rubbish pits. Aya liked it that way. She could get all the interesting scrap work from there, all different types of electronic things which she could take home, much to the disgust of her mother. Her father was a metal worker; she had watched him as a child growing up. He was constantly doing work, her mother and her father never got on, but it was an arranged marriage, they could do nothing. Aya was more naturally attached to her father. Her mother had given up at the grand age of six trying to keep her away from the workshop inside the house and the place was always tense when her father was called away to work for weeks on end. He was part of the group that maintained the outer dome which protected them from the outside.

Skidding to a halt, she jumped off her skateboard and ran over to the nearest scrap pile. She was looking for some to inspire her so she wouldn’t have to listen to her mother’s ranting about how ‘girls shouldn’t be doing such work’ and ‘when are you going to find yourself a man?’ That was the most annoying rant of all. People married young here; the population was controlled by the iron fist of the human government. You dare not speak out against it unless you wanted to be shunned by the society but that was the least of your worries. The worst case was exclusion if you came in contact with a robot. Aya remembered being told that the air was not breathable out there, which is why they had the outer and inner dome. Two different domes, her father was always told to wear a suit when getting to the outer dome.
“Hmm?” she murmured to herself as she picked up a flat piece of iron. It looked so controlled. “I wonder why someone threw this out?” she asked to the air. “It’s a good piece.”
