Chapter 1
Introduction to Complex Potion-Making

This book is for advanced students. Most of the potions illustrated here are powerful, and disastrous to get wrong. Even a single misstep can cause grave problems.

That being said, for those with a keen mind and an unwavering hand, these potions are quite useful, and can be brewed with experience. However, caution must be advised, as even the most talented can make mistakes. You as students are encouraged to try your best at these recipes, as all of them can be accomplished with a steady hand, patience, and caution.

This is just another step in potion-making. Most interested individuals would be advised to research further when complete with this book. These are the techniques used to create these complex concoctions, and you are encouraged to study further. Potion making can be a rewarding experience if given a chance.

Chapter 2
Draught of Living Death

User Image

The Draught of Living Death brings upon its drinker a very powerful sleep that can last indefinitely. This draught is very dangerous if not used with caution...This is an extremely dangerous potion. Execute with maximum caution.

Directions:

Cut up the Sophophorus bean
Pour in 250 fl.oz. of water and add 5 oz. of African sea salt to the beaker. Set the beaker aside after all the water has been added. Be very careful not to shake or move the beaker now.
Leave the water and salt to rest for five minutes.
Slowly pour all the water into the cauldron.
With your left hand use the graduated cylinder to obtain 40 fl.oz. of essence of wormwood.
With your right hand hold the cauldron at a slight angle and pour ten drops (20 fl.oz.) of essence of wormwood.
Now with your left hand hold the cauldron at a slightly different angle and pour another ten drops of wormwood essence.
Chop three Valerian roots into small squared pieces. After cutting place it in a beaker with water. Leave it to settle for five minutes. Your potion should now be resembling a smoot blackcurrant-coloured liquid.
Carefully pour the Sophophorus bean's juice into the cauldron
Add seven drops of the reduced liquid from the beaker; make sure there are no traces or fragments of Valerian root.
Stir the potion ten times clockwise; your potion should now be turning a light shade of lilac.
With your right hand stir the potion anti-clockwise until the potion turns as clear was water; every stir should take approximately two and a half seconds.
Slowly pour seven square pieces of Valerian root.
Stir the potion ten times anti-clockwise.
Add one hundred and fifty fl.oz. of powdered root of asphodel.
Hold the cauldron with your right hand; with your left hand gently stir the potion ten times anti-clockwise and eight times clockwise.
Leave the potion to settle for two and a half minutes.
Add one small piece of Valerian root.
Your potion should turn to a pale pink colour; the preparation is now complete.

Chapter 5
Everlasting Elixers

User Image

Everlasting Elixirs are a type of potion with the effect to either never run out of potion or to work forever. This is accomplished using a spell, and total concentration is required when performing the proper movements and saying the incantation. A mistake in either case can lead to dire consequences.

Name of the spell Aeternum
Pronunciation of the spell Ay-TERN-um
Meaning behind the name forever, always, eternally, for ever, also, perpetually
Effects of the spell It casts an enchantment that causes potions to last longer than their intended duration ie: Everlasting Elixers.
Wand movements required to preform properly Tapping your wand twice on the cauldron and then make a circle above the potion.
History behind the spell It was made by an irate witch that hated it when she had to take a potion several times a day for pain. Unfortunately, the spell worked so well, that while she succeeded in making the potion last indefinitely, it had the unfortunate effect of making her numb to all pain and caused her death a year later since she didn't feel it when she got whalloped by a Whomping Willow. However, the spell has been refined since, leading to more controlled effects of long-lasting potions.
Is there a distance requirement? You have to be in close proximity to the potion for it to work.
Are the effects lasting? It is just as the spell description suggests.
Anything else? It is a very tricky spell, requiring exceptional concentration since a miscast can have serious, even deadly consequences.

Chapter 6
Felix Felicis

User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.

Felix Felicis makes the drinker lucky for a period of time, depending on how much is taken, during which everything they attempt will be successful. It is meant to be used sparingly, however, as it causes giddiness, recklessness, and dangerous overconfidence if taken in excess. Felix is highly toxic in large quantities and is also a banned substance in all organised competitions, such as Quidditch, along with all other methods of cheating. It is very difficult to make, disastrous to get wrong, and requires six months to stew before it is ready to be consumed. Felix Felicis is also called "'Liquid Luck'".

Felix Felicis possibly works by providing the drinker with the best possible scenario. This usually registers in the drinker's mind in the form of an unusual urge to take a certain action, or as a voice telling him to do so. The effectiveness of the potion thus depends on the cooperation of the drinker with the voice, for the drinker may for some reason be unable to follow their Felix-induced urges, or can simply choose not to. This is easily remedied, however, as the potion does not single out only one scenario, but changes paths as the situation unfolds. Then again, the chances of the drinker refusing to follow the urge is very unlikely, as it manifests as a "sensation of infinite opportunity" where the imbiber feels supremely confident enough to be infallible for the duration of the Potion's effect. Felix Felicis also seem to culminate the magical power of the one who imbibed it.

The potion is not able to better the chances of the drinker against particularly powerful enchantments. The potion's effectiveness seems to wane after a certain amount of time as well. Overdosing is dangerous, as it is very toxic in large quantity, and over-reliance on it may lead to dangerous overconfidence, giddiness, and recklessness. The potion is very difficult and time consuming to brew, and disastrous if concocted incorrectly. Due to its effects, it is considered a tool of cheating and therefore prohibited in organised events such as Quidditch and examinations.

Directions:

Part 1

Add three measures of stargrass to the cauldron.
Add four peppermint leaves to the cauldron.
Stir six times, clockwise.
Wave your wand then let potion brew for 40 minutes.
Add 5 drops of moondew to the cauldron.
Add 2 unicorn horns to the mortar, crush to a fine powder, then add 6 measures of the crushed unicorn horn to the cauldron.
Heat for 15 seconds on a low heat.
Wave your wand to complete this stage of the potion.

Part 2

After six months of brewing, make the following additions:

Add 2 measures of Mercury and Mars to the cauldron.
Add 4 fairy wings to the mortar, crush to a fine powder, then add 2 measure of the crushed wings to the cauldron.
Heat for 30 seconds at a high temperature.
Wave your wand then let potion brew for twenty-four hours.
Stir three times, counter-clockwise.
Wave your wand to complete the potion.

Chapter 7
Poison Antidote, following Golpalott's Third Law

"The antidote for a blended poison will be equal to more than the sum of the antidotes for each of the separate components."
—Golpalott's Third Law.

Golpalott's Third Law is a law for making antidotes, which appears to say that the antidote for a blended poison - that is, a poison created by mixing several other poisons together - cannot simply be created by finding the antidotes to each separate poison in the blended whole and mixing them together. Instead, the potionmaker must find that single ingredient which, when added to the blended antidotes, transforms them near-alchemically into a combined whole which will counteract the entire blended poison. Simply put, according to this law, a true antidote to a blended poison is more than the sum of its parts.

Creating an antidote following this law is quite difficult. The law dictates the protocol for making antidotes for all poisons. The existence of this law relates to the concept of synergy, or the idea that a whole product is greater than the sum of its parts. In particular, it brings to mind muggle drug synergy; the combined effect of multiple drugs taken simultaneously is often greater than the effects of taking those same drugs separately.

Chapter 8
Amortentia

User Image

"Powerful infatuations can be induced by the skillful potioneer, but never yet has anyone managed to create the truly unbreakable, eternal, unconditional attachment that alone can be called Love."
—Hector Dagworth-Granger on love potions.

Amortentia is the most powerful Love Potion in the entire world. It causes a powerful infatuation or obsession in the drinker. It has a distinctive mother-of-pearl sheen, and steam rises from it in characteristic spirals.

It has a different aroma for everyone who smells it, reminding each person of the things that they find most attractive, even if the person themselves doesn't acknowledge or is unaware of their fondness for the object of their affection.

The effects of the potion on a person are described to be near instantaneous; with the person who drank the potion appearing "pale and sickly" and becoming obsessed with the object of their affections, speaking of them as though "hit by a ray of purest sunlight" and becoming excited or dangerously unstable towards others.

The potion must be administrated continuously in order to maintain the false love in the drinker. Otherwise, the effects will wear off and the victim would regain their own free will.

Directions:

Add 3 rose thorns to your cauldron
Add 2 veela hairs to your cauldron
Add 2 measures of Standard Ingredient to your cauldron
Stir 3 times, clockwise
Heat to a medium temperature for 5 minutes
Wave your wand
Leave to brew and return in 60 minutes.
Add 5 pinches of lovage to your cauldron
Add a pinch of silverweed to your cauldron
Stir 5 times, anti-clockwise
Wave the wand to complete the potion

Directions:

Mix in Ginger Root until lime green.
Mix Armadillo Bile until blue.
Mix Ground Scarab Beetles until red.
Remix Armadillo Bile until red liquid is yellow. (Not dark green)
Remix Ginger Roots until brew is lime green.

Chapter 10
Draught of Peace

User Image

The Draught of Peace is a potion which relieves anxiety and agitation. Its ingredients are powdered moonstone, syrup of hellebore, powdered porcupine quills, Valerian root, and powdered unicorn horn. It should be a turquoise blue when finished and simmered before being drunk.

It is ironically a difficult potion to make, requiring that the brewer follow the directions carefully, because making a mistake can have drastic consequences. Adding too much of the ingredients, for instance, will put the drinker of the potion into a deep — and possibly irreversible — sleep.

The directions for making the potion are very detailed. Ingredients must be added in the exact order and amounts specified, and the potion needs to be stirred 7 times, both clockwise and counter-clockwise. Before the addition of the final ingredient, hellebore, the temperature of the flames must be lowered, and the potion allowed to simmer for seven minutes.

If brewed correctly, the potion will emit a silvery vapour, but the possible characteristics of a failed batch seem to be endless (everything from green sparks, dark grey steam, a sulfurous odour, a cement-like consistency, to a dangerous instability that will cause it to explode and set one's robes alight).

Directions:

Add powdered moonstone until the potion turns green.
Stir until the potion turns blue.
Add powdered moonstone until the potion turns purple.
Allow to simmer until the potion turns pink.
Shake powdered porcupine quills vigorously until they are ready and then add until the potion turns red.
Stir until the potion turns orange.
Add more porcupine quills until the potion turns turquoise.
Allow to simmer till the potion turns purple.
Add powdered unicorn horn until the potion turns pink.
Stir until the potion turns red.
Allow to simmer until the potion turns purple.
Add more powdered moonstone until the potion turns grey.
Allow the potion to simmer until it turns orange.
Add more powdered porcupine quills until the potion turns white.
Add syrup of hellebore until the potion turns turquoise.
Allow to simmer until the potion emits a silver vapour..

Chapter 11
Strengthening Solution

User Image

Strengthening Solution is a potion that presumably increases the drinker's strength. It is brewed in at least two stages, requiring several days to mature in between, and two of the ingredients used to make it are salamander blood, and powdered Griffin claw.

This can be a difficult potion to master. If incorrectly brewed, it can congeal into a foul mess. The correct color for the potion should be a bright turquoise.

Directions:

Add 2 scoops of Standard Ingredients to the cauldron
Add 6 drops of Salamander Blood to the cauldron
Stir 3 times clockwise
Heat to a low temperature for 10 minutes
Leave to brew for 50 minutes
Add 5 Gryffin Claws to your mortar
Crush the claws to a fine powder and add 3 scoops to the cauldron
Stir 5 times anti-clockwise
Add a drop of exploding fluid to your cauldron
Wave your wand to complete the potion

Chapter 12
Polyjuice Potion

User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.

Polyjuice Potion is a very complicated potion that allows the drinker to assume the form of someone else. While it can account for both age and gender, Polyjuice Potion cannot be used for a human to take an animal form or for a half-breed to assume human form.

A piece of the person who is to be imitated — usually hair — is needed for the transformation. Before this final ingredient is added, Polyjuice looks like thick, dark mud that bubbles slowly. When the piece of the person to be imitated is added, however, the potion changes colour; it seems to react according to the nature of the person to be imitated, once even described as the 'essence' of the person. Good-hearted people result in more attractive colours and tastes, while mean people cause the opposite effect.

The effects of a single dose last anywhere from ten minutes to twelve hours, depending on how well the potion has been brewed. If a person dies while under Polyjuice Potion, then they will retain the form of whoever they have transformed into, rather than reverting back to their original shape. Polyjuice can be used by a person to transform into someone of the opposite gender. It appears to adapt to account for the age of the person being turned into, as well as any injuries they have acquired. In addition, congenital conditions of the person will apparently be replicated.

The potion is complicated and can go awry. The Polyjuice Potion cannot be used to successfully transform into an animal. Likewise, the potion cannot be used by a non-human or half-breed individual to turn into a human. However, it seems that individuals whose non-human ancestry is less than half can successfully use Polyjuice. However, it is also possible that a person cannot transform into a half-breed using Polyjuice Potion, but half-breeds themselves can.

Preparation

Independent of its actual brewing process, the Polyjuice Potion requires a good deal of preparation prior to making it. For example, the lacewing flies must be stewed for twenty-one days prior to making the potion, and only fluxweed picked at the full moon is acceptable. The total process takes approximately one month to complete.

Directions:

Part 1

Add three measures of fluxweed to the cauldron.
Add two bundles of knotgrass to the cauldron.
Stir three times, clockwise.
Wave your wand then let potion brew for eighty minutes.
Add four leeches to the cauldron.
Add two scoops of lacewing flies to the mortar, crush to a fine powder, then add two measures of the crushed lacewings to the cauldron.
Heat for thirty seconds on a low heat.
Wave your wand to complete this stage of the potion.

Part 2

Anytime after brewing the first stage above, make the following additions:

Add three measures of boomslang skin to the cauldron.
Add one measure of bicorn horn to the mortar, crush to a fine powder, then add one measure of the crushed horn to the cauldron.
Heat for twenty seconds at a high temperature.
Wave your wand then let potion brew for twenty-four hours.
Add one additional scoop of lacewings to the cauldron.
Stir three times, counter-clockwise.
Split potion into multiple doses, if desired, then add the pieces of the person you wish to become.
Wave your wand to complete the potion.

Closing Comments

If you have gotten this far without blowing yourself up, poisoning yourself, or otherwise doing yourself bodily harm, congratulations! You are now one step closer to becoming a proficient potioneer. However, only so much can be learned from a textbook, and that can be exemplified by how many new and interesting concoctions are being brewed to this day. Anyone is encouraged to study further, as potions are a never-ending area of exploration. Perhaps one day your accomplishments will be studied in a textbook similar.
