Kent is a county in South East England, and one of the home counties. Kent has a nominal border with the French department of Pas-de-Calais halfway through the Channel Tunnel, as well as a defined boundary with Essex in the middle of the Thames Estuary. The county also borders Greater London to the North West near the towns of Swanley and Dartford, Surrey near Westerham and East Sussex near Tunbridge Wells. Because of its abundance of orchards and hop gardens, Kent is traditionally known as "The Garden of England" – a name often applied when marketing the county or its produce, although other regions have tried to lay claim to the title. Major industries in the north-west of Kent have included cement, papermaking, and aircraft construction, but these are now in decline. Large parts of Kent are within the London commuter belt. South and East Kent rely on tourism and agriculture. Coal mining has also played its part in Kent's industrial heritage.

┏━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━┓
Nicole had woken up this morning completely petrified for what was to come. With all that has happened in her life and during her lifetime she didn't trust for the day to go just as smoothly as she would have liked. But much to her surprise it had. Of course there were a few mishaps throughout the day; she overslept and missed Fiona generous wake up calls and had to be shaken awake by a frantic Tanya babbling about reservations and massages and whatnot. So after casting a quick scorgify on her person and throwing on the closest clothing she was whisked off by her best friend and daughter to a surprise spa day to relax her and get her ready for the wedding. The second mishap happened when Tanya managed to drop her glasses in the hot mud bath, why she had her glasses the mother didn't know but the teen had certainly been distraught when her attempted summoning charms were met with failures. Thankfully she was wearing her contacts for the wedding and she was also doubly thankful that she suspected her daughter's absentmindedness would result in something like this and had bought a second pair of frames with the same along with the first. She, of course, didn't have them on her person so the poor girl had to sort of waddle though the day with slightly blurry vision before they ended their spa trip and returned back home to actually get ready for the big day. Evening.

To keep with tradition, they stayed out of the way of the men of the wedding party, mainly just Gearvin and his best man Gerald, while they glamoured up. She will admit to tearing up once or twice at seeing her children dressed up in their finest and definitely was on the brink of a break down at seeing her own self in her first wedding dress. When she had married Gregory they had merely gone down to the ministry to sign the paperwork, she never got a dress a ring or much of anything really. It had broken her heart to not walk her down the aisle with her father at her arm but now she would get her chance, even if it wasn't with him but her own children. All too quickly it was time for her to make her appearance and seeing her friends and new family waiting at the bottom of the walkway, she didn't hesitate or even falter as she glided down towards her future. And now here she was, a new name but the same face and yet she felt like a completely different person. She wasn't Nicole Cherri, she hadn't been that wide-eyed young girl for quite a while, but she also wasn't Nicole Polk and she refused to ever go back to that dark place. Instead she was now Nicole Whitethorne, what that means she didn't know yet but she was certainly ready to find out.

A chuckle escaped her as she spotted Gerald being his apparently usual boisterous self with his wife trying to reign him in. She had only met the couple a week ago but they were quickly becoming friends and confidants. Jarai reminded her a little of her mother with her quick wit while her fun stories about her husband and children had her nearly rolling on the floor. She wasn't surprised to know that Gearvin had a best friend (despite the general consensus about his demeanor she knew he was gentle soul, as long as she never said it to his face) but she had been over his choice of friend. Both men had grown up in similar circles but the way the Scottish man behaved she Nicole could have seen him in better company with Deveron rather than the more serious older brother. But after seeing them both interact with one another she could see how deep of a friendship the two men had. Even after his Best Man speech which had her blushing from her roots to the tips of her toes after his comment about how both men preferred dark chocolate. Timothy, thankfully, didn't get the joke but Tanya had choked on her drink from snorting in laughter. Luckily the smacks he got from his wife simmered him down and the evening progressed as it was supposed to. Or as close to it as their chaotic family would allow. And didn't that just make her smile even brighter.

Gearvin sighed and enjoyed the fact that the wedding went off well enough. He'd been nervous, but never let it show, though he was sure that at least his son was jealous. Meanwhile, Gerald was convinced that they were practically brothers or some nonsense with his marriage to Nicole and Gerald's to Jarai. How exactly that was concievable was unknown to Gearvin, who was at the moment simply hold Nicole's hand and watch the events unfolding. The reception seemed to be going well, or as well as it could be, with Chance running up to Nicole and asking why they had to be married. He was sure that while endearing, his grandson was probably being a bit obtuse. Then again, considering his conception, Gearvin wasn't all that surprised.

As it was, at least Chris and Ada had their children with them, and while they were toddling about, they weren't causing mayhem. Unlike his brother, who had insisted on making his won toast about how Gearvin was much more suitable for married life and mentioned that Nicole was a very lucky woman. What he had said to Gearvin in private wasn't suitable for younger ears, and as such weren't things that Gearvin would wish repeated. Sometimes he wished he could spell Deveron's mouth shut on more than one occasion, and this was proving to be one of them as he was currently conversing with Gerald. He was pretty sure the two were in collusion about something yet unseen.

User Image Location: Kent ~ Whitethorne Wedding ~

Mira was surprised to be invited to the wedding of her boyfriend's mother and would have declined if not for the fact they were an item. When she told her older sister Leonette, she insisted she not back out because she didn't think she needed to be there. Of course going to the actual wedding was a lot better then the Slytherin expected. Timothy's mother looked beautiful, it kind of make her wonder if her mother looked just as pretty on her wedding day. Mira figured so, she was probably just as happy too.

After the wedding, came the reception. Honestly Mira still wasn't used to showing her feelings around others. Sure she was happy for Timothy's mum and Mr. Whitethorne of course but she was so out of her element, she didn't know what to do. Reminding herself that this was a wedding and she should be enjoying herself, the blonde relaxed and evidently thought about the many ways she could survive Benjamin Ryans for the rest of the event.

spaceDesiree finally succeeded in squirming out of her mother's arms and getting her feet on the ground, a task she had been trying to accomplish for quite possibly the past hour. She was not a happy child; there were so many things about this that she did not like. Not the least of which was that there were strangers absolutely everywhere and she couldn't get to anyone she wanted to see without having to walk past them. Blue eyes watched Adalaide sigh as the Hufflepuff stood and reached down to take her daughter's hand. "Okay, Desiree, where are we going?" she asked, tone somewhat amused. A small, chubby hand reached out and pointed across the way at her cousin. "Chancey!" she declared, tugging her mother along behind her to approach the slightly-older boy. "Chancey an' Gamma," she added, not seeing the way her mum rolled her eyes behind her.

spaceAs she drew near, Desiree tugged her hand from Adalaide's grasp and closed the distance with a clumsy run, very nearly falling over twice. The toddler threw her arms around Chance with a grin, hugging the boy tight. "Chancey!" she exclaimed, and then she was letting out a string of gibberish at the boy, still holding onto him. Ada took the chance to glance up at Nicole, offering the bride a wide grin. "You look beautiful," she told her. This apparently attracted Desiree's attention, and the child released her hold on Chance, waving up at Nicole and bouncing on her feet. "Bootiful!" she declared adamantly, then she frowned, a finger going to her chin and tapping. This source of this habit, Ada thought with a grin, could have been any number of places, but it was rather adorable to see the little girl do it. "Dress itchy, though," Desi told her grandmother, walking over and wrapping herself around Nicole's leg. The child could only assume that Nicole's wedding dress was itchy, given that her own was, as was the one her mother wore. She didn't quite understand why they all had to wear such itchy clothes. None of her other dresses itched, why couldn't she wear one of them? And Mummy wore dresses all the time, and none of them itched, so why did this one? It was very puzzling.

spaceEcho shifted somewhat awkwardly in his suit, fingers tapping against his thigh in a nervous rhythm. He wasn't actually all that nervous, not really, but the Ravenclaw found that he wasn't entirely certain what he was supposed to do with himself at present. The wedding, as far as he could tell, had gone smoothly enough, as had the beginning of the reception (although, for a second he'd thought he was going to have to perform the Heimlich maneuver on his girlfriend over a certain racy comment made by Gearvin's best man). Things were settling into a comfortable calm, which was rather nice, actually. He wasn't in nearly as good a mood as he could have been, he supposed, but he was pretty sure that the Whitethornes would forgive him for the air of melancholy that seemed to hover. Technically speaking, his whole family had originally been invited to attend the wedding, but... he sighed. His Mum would've loved to be here. She'd always been a little obsessed with weddings. He supposed it appealed to her on multiple levels; her artistic side was drawn to the elaborate gowns and beautifully decorated spaces, and her romantic side found the entire tradition beautiful. Too bad she hadn't gotten to attend.

spaceOn the plus side (and he was absolutely certain it was a plus side, especially after meeting some of the other guests), his sister had politely declined to attend. Apparently something had happened with Jer's family at the start of the holiday break and that, coupled with her own depression over their parent's deaths, made it so that she didn't think she'd be a particularly good guest. Unfortunately, that had left him feeling a bit... out of place. He'd met Tanya's family, of course, but he didn't know any of them particularly well, aside from Chalmes. But, he'd been sleeping on the young man's couch, so it figured that they'd gotten to know one another. Echo found that he rather liked the eldest Whitethorne sibling, but he certainly wouldn't want to end up on the guy's bad side. His son was much more agreeable, almost hilariously so.

spaceEcho watched as Tanya's sister-in-law and niece made their way over to Nicole, expression curious. There was something up with that particular branch of the family. He'd hardly seen them, which struck him as rather odd, because as far as he could tell, the whole family was rather close. Adalaide was also very... protective, he supposed was the word, with her kids, but that could easily be chalked up to her being a first time mother, and a rather young one at that. But, Tanya seemed very excited for him to get to know everyone in her family... except for Chris and Ada. He wanted to ask her about it, but he wasn't quite sure what exactly he was asking. It was just... odd. Especially since what little she had said of Chris made it seem like she thought they'd get along, possibly better than he could with Chalmes, so why the secrecy?

ஐﻬ Dating Mira Mitchell
I'll move myself and my family aside
If we happen to be left half alive
I'll get all my papers and smile at the sky
Though I know that the hypnotized never lie
Do ya?

Timothy didn't think weddings were so stressful or worrisome until hearing the adults nitpick at it. But for all their worries and bickering the actual event turned out just as good as he expected, better actually since he had never actually seen his mum in her wedding dress until just that day. She looked really beautiful and he was certain that Father hadn't been able to stop staring at her since they escorted her down the aisle. Actually he hadn't left her side practically all evening, grinning as he looked over at the newly married couple slowly being surrounded by toddlers. He hadn't heard what Chance had asked but he had seen Desiree pulling at her dress and hearing her complaints practically all through the dinner. Luckily she hadn't been agitated enough to actually bite someone, who knows what would've happened then. Looking around the crowded space for Mira he had to sidestep the Ellis' couple as Mr. Ellis tried dragging his wife out onto the dance floor looking a bit tipsy. The couple was nice enough and they definitely told some interesting stories, he just wondered what the older man had meant about him and Father liking "dark chocolate." A lot of people liked dark chocolate, (well not him, he preferred milk or white actually). He was pretty sure Echo liked dark chocolate since he had heard his sister complaining about it once or twice for Yule or his birthday or some other random gift giving event. When he had asked Tanya what the chocolate comment meant she had just burst into laughter even more and told him to either ask their father or one of their brothers. After that piece of advice he wasn't sure if he really wanted to know after all. Finally, Timothy spotted his girlfriend (and yes he did get a funny tingle at the word "girlfriend" despite Benjamin's teasings) and walked over to her with an apologetic grin. "Sorry about that, my tie got loose and I didn't know how to tie it back." What had actually happened was that it was too tight so he tried to loosen it but it got too loose so he tried to tighten it and that had ended with his finger somehow stuck. After listening to his friend caterwaul for about five minutes he finally got unstuck but was told not to tie the bowtie back and look "messy sophisticated" or some romp like that. All he knew was that he wasn't touching the bowtie again for the rest of the night. It was clearly demented. "I hope you aren't feeling too awkward about coming. You look very pretty in your dress by the way!" he added almost absentmindedly with a light blush. Dammit, you'd think once he confessed his feelings he'd be better at this sort of thing.

XXXXXⒽⓐⓛⓕⓑⓛⓞⓞⓓXXXXXPre fectXXXXX⒟⒜⒯⒤⒩⒢ Echo Lovette

All my friends, they’re different people
Anxious like the ocean in a storm
When we go out, yeah, we’re electric
Coursing through our bodies ’til we’re one

Tanya had been looking forward to this wedding since her parents first started dating and if she were to be completely honest, even a little bit before that. She had spent most of her childhood looking up to her Father as her actual parental figure so now that they had made it official all she felt was a deep sense of finality. Like she could finally check it off some imaginary list. It also helped that she had never seen her Mum as happy as she was now, even as she laughed at Chance's questions of why his granny and grandpa were just now getting married. In order to keep the peace she had merely told the little boy that they would explain at a later date before the couple was then given another small toddler, this time Desiree. The teen was just passing by everyone when she heard the little girl comment about the dress being itchy and giggled finding it just adorable.

She also passed by her youngest brother and his new girlfriend and had to force herself not to go over and coo at them both. Or stalk them. But she couldn't help it, it wasn't everyday her Cookie got his first girlfriend! And it was the very same girl he had been crushing on since the summer! She was entitled to at least five minutes of cooing and twenty pictures to commemorate the event. Although with that friend of his all she would probably have to do is hand over a copy of her Healing notes from the past year or so and he'd give up his copies. She then narrowly missed being pushed off onto the dance floor where a few older couples were dancing, including Mr. and Mrs. Ellis. She still couldn't believe he had included that in his Best Man toast! Had she actually taken a sip of her drink she might have actually choked for real and not just on her laughter. Who knew Father had a best friend that was basically a taller (and less flighty) Uncle Deveron?!

Still giggling she weaved in between people until she found Echo staring at Ada and Desi over by her parents and gave a mental curse. He would be fascinated about that particular family, it probably didn't help that she didn't really talk much about her brother and his family besides the fact that they were both huge nerds and that they're twins were adorable to the infinity degree. She didn't even tell him Ada worked in Hogsmeade in fear that he'd want to go and talk to her one day. Not that he probably would, she worked in plant shop and as far as she knew he didn't hold that much interest in Herbology. But they wouldn't talk about Herbology they'd talk about bad movies and comics and she'd get comfortable and her tongue would slip and bam! Secret spilled, terror in the streets, and it would all be her fault. Uggghh, but it was so hard not to tell him! Out of everyone she was sure he'd take the news that her brother was a vampire and his kids halflings (her words not theirs, she was sure her sister-in-law would throw something at her if she said it aloud) and would probably go as far as to consider it "cool," But it wasn't her secret to tell and as far as she knew only family and really really really close family friends could know about it. And despite her protest that her boyfriend was a really really really close family friend, her Mum hadn't budged. Maybe she should just marry him right out of Hogwarts just so she couldn't have to keep up the secret any longer. Ugghh but she didn't want to be married at eighteen!

With another inward groan she forced herself to stop thinking of the negatives and start focusing on the positives again. Like how hot Echo looked in his suit. It really shouldn't be fair that he could look that nice all dressed up just seconds after she was contemplating marriage. It was a crime, it had to be. Still, she walked over to him with a small grin on her face and placed a small peck on his cheek before grabbing his hand. "You know, it's almost becoming a tradition that we see each other all dressed up at Yule" Tanya said with a wry grin.

spaceFiona stood somewhat off to the side from the rest of the wedding guests, a glass in hand, watching Nicole with a soft, somewhat indulgent expression. She was incredibly happy for her best friend, and glad that, aside from a misstep here and there, the wedding had mostly gone off without a hitch. She'd been a bit worried when they'd gotten off to a slow start, but everything had evened itself out in the end, for which she was thankful. After all, after everything Nicole had been through, she certainly deserved this. Fiona wasn't sure what she meant by that, though, if it were the wedding, or the happy marriage that was sure to follow. Either way, she knew she was right; the Scot didn't think she knew anyone who deserved happiness so much as her best friend. And of course, she looked positively radiant, a fact which instilled the seamstress with no small amount of pride, given that she'd been the one to design and make the wedding dress.

spaceThe redhead shifted her weight from one foot to another, taking a sip from her glass and attempting to loosen up. She shouldn't be so uncomfortable, but then, it had been a long time since she'd been the sort to chat with strangers. She rather wished that Jaime were here, but he was out of the country at present, and apparently having a rather good time, if his last letter were any indication. She watched as a few members of the Whitethorne brood gathered around Nicole and sighed, thinking that she should probably give the woman a chance to talk to people other than herself for a while. It wasn't right to monopolize the attention of the bride, even if she were her Maid of Honor and even if she didn't really know anyone else present at the reception. She'd met the other members of the wedding party, of course, but she didn't feel like she knew any of them any better than she did the customers who came into her shop once and were never seen again. They'd not ever talked, aside from what was required of them all due to the wedding, probably because Fiona tended to come off as somewhat cold when she was around strangers and outside of her comfort zone. She was quite at ease when dealing with customers in her shop; other than that, getting her to approach a stranger was akin to pulling teeth. She chewed her lip faintly, then took another drink from her glass. At least everyone seemed to be having a good time.

Mira listened to the craziness of the speeches and enjoyed the dinner. When Timothy came to find her (which she knew he would) she smiled brightly. He seriously looked really good all dressed up in his white suit and yellow tie. Seeing his apologetic grin though she knew he was probably feeling bad about something. Even she knew that she seemed out of place but that didn’t mean it couldn’t get better, she was with Timothy after all. “It’s fine, I can’t exactly relate with bowtie malfunctions but I’m sure they can be a pain.” She said with a smile. “And don’t worry about me awkward isn’t quite what I’d call it, out of place maybe but definitely not awkward.” She added dismissively.

At the mention of her looking pretty Mira blushed. He was her boyfriend they were supposed to say stuff like that. That didn’t mean she had to act all weird when he said it.
“Not as pretty as your mum, but thank you. You look rather dashing yourself.” She told him still blushing at her comment. At least she couldn’t complain to herself about her not using a good enough word to describe how great he looked.

"Da! Mum an' Desi!" A pudgy finger pointed out the one year old's mother and sister, and Chris had to shake his head. Zach had really decided that he didn't like being separated from his sister, and Chris couldn't blame him. He'd been the same way, at least at that age. He'd never left Chalmes for anything, and well, maybe when he was younger he had a tendency to hide behind his twin, but that had passed years ago. Zach, however, looked like he was determined to follow his sister over to Nicole and their grandfather. He only vaguely looked up in exasperation as he figured his own mum was laughing at him.

"No Zach. We'll wait until your grandmum isn't so crowded with people first." The toddler gave his father a look that suggested he wasn't happy with the situation, and Chris merely chuckled to himself. Maybe he was having too much fun with this. Not with saying no, but the expression on his son's face. He was nearly certain that Zach was going to start trying to boss him around. He wasn't nearly as bad as his sister, but Chris suspected that was because he had a soft spot for his daughter. "You want to go talk to Tanya or Timothy? Or hey, Uncle Dev's here, pretty sure he wouldn't mind seeing you."

"No!" Oh, it was going to be one of those nights. Chris had to sometimes wonder if Eretria cursed his son to be demanding sometimes. He doubted it, there was no spell he'd ever read of that did that, but then again, spells were invented all the time. He also wondered if maybe the outfit was causing Zach to be uncomfortable. His own memories of being that young were nonexistent, but he knew he had preferred to run around the house naked when he was really young. Gave his mum a heart attack one time. Never helped when Chalmes joined in either. He vaguely wondered if his father remembered those days or not, but figured he shouldn't ask him. After all, like Nicole, Gearvin was also busy talking to people, as Eretria and her boyfriend walked up. He vaguely wondered why, but figured it would be a discussion for another night. In any case, he was having to try and keep his son from just running up to everyone and bugging the heck out of them.

Eretria and Magni had been deep in conversation for a while during the reception, Magni raising his glass to toast the newlyweds when appropriate. However, given the expression on his face, he didn't look like he cared too much for what Eretria was saying. Not that she blamed him. She knew what had happened at home, and the Slytherin also knew that he was also resisting the urge to hurt someone. Luke being arrested, his brother Balder being severely hurt, all of it had to be hard on anyone. Eretria could only do as much as she could, which was look into things herself, but she was coming up short. Whatever that had truly happened at the estate seemed to be something that no one had any information, or the information was elsewhere.

A frown pulled at the sides of her lips before she gave Magni a quick whispered response and stood, making her way to her father. Gearvin seemed to be enjoying himself, despite what seemed to be her uncle steadily making his way through the alcohol. She knew she would have to do something soon to ensure he got home safely at least. When she got to her father, she leaned over and whispered something to him, which caused the older man to frown himself and look confused as he eyed his daughter. Eretria straightened up however and walked the few steps to smile and hand Nicole a small envelope.
"Congratulations Nicole, Father. I wasn't able to get much, but I figure this should be a wonderful gift to the two of you. Should get your married life off to a good start, at the least." Inside the envelope was a newspaper clipping from a muggle source, as well as several handwritten notes and letters she had managed to gather together. With it was another letter, which read:

                                                Eretria
Inside this envelope is correspondence, notes, and the like I have managed to gather about a certain acquaintance of yours. I believe this should make you feel quite a bit safer now. However, I regret to inform you that your ex-husband Gregory Polk has met his rather unfortunate end at the hands of a notorious serial killer. Quite muggle, as well. I am sure you will give you and your children time to grieve or whatever you wish to do, but I felt this would be a fresh start to your new life. Congratulations, and I wish you many years of happiness to you both.

                                                Best regards,
                                                Eretria Whitethorne

ஐﻬ Dating Mira Mitchell
I'll move myself and my family aside
If we happen to be left half alive
I'll get all my papers and smile at the sky
Though I know that the hypnotized never lie
Do ya?

Timothy smiled at Mira's flippant answer knowing she was trying to not seem as awkward as she might have felt but instead of pointing that out to her he would just help to ease her discomfort. That's what people in relationships did right? At her blush from his compliment he found himself thinking that she looked even prettier with the color on her face but thought that he might embarrass her further if he said so so he kept it to himself. When she mentioned his mum looking prettier his grin widened as he turned back to look at her and his father slowly becoming surrounded by little ones and surprisingly Eretria. His eyes narrowed as she handed his mother something and watched her facial expression as she read over whatever was inside. Her eyes widened and even from his distance he could see how tightly she was gripping the paper making him a little worried. Did something bad happen? Did it have something to do with Him? He wanted to go over to her but he saw a smile finally erupt onto her face and, surprise of all surprises, she threw her arms around his oldest sister. What in the world was in that envelope? Maybe she'd say later. Feeling a bit bad that his attention had been averted from his girlfriend, Timothy turned back to her with a sheepish expression before holding his hand out towards her. "Would the lady care to dance?"

I try to deny when my surface butterflies, and I try to resist when you say that it's alright, and I try to believe that it's nothing but a crush... but it's incredible, so incredible...

ELSBETH VASS | SIXTH YEAR | HUFFLEPUFF | BLOOD TRAITOR

Elsie had never actually been to a wedding before. Her family had not been an extended one growing up. Her father had been disowned by his parents before they died, and besides that, he'd been an only child. The main source of wealth had come from her mother's side, and she, too, had been an only child, one who inherited everything when her parents passed away. There had been no cousins, no aunts, no uncles, no grandparents, just her and her sisters and their father for as long as she could remember, and the occasional vague memory of her mother- not so much of her, really, but of her presence, warm and bright and laughing and then silence. Newlyn had more concrete memories, she knew, and Morven had none. But the only familial event she'd ever been to had been her mother's funeral and all she remembered of that was that it had sleeted freezing cold rain and her father had been mute the entire time.

Luckily, Elsie considered her friends her extended family. Tanya and Echo and Kas were like additional siblings to her, and even if she didn't know their families very well, she was happy to be here. Weddings were brights spots in dark times. And what with Echo's parents and.... and just everything, she was glad this had been something for them all to look forward to, or at least try to enjoy in the moment. She'd met Tanya's mother before, of course, and her new husband, Mr, Whitethorne. She was going to have to remember to get Tanya's new last name right from now on. She wasn't Tanya Cherri anymore. This could be practice for when the Gryffindor became Tanya Lovette, she thought in amusement. Yes, technically she shouldn't already be planning her friends's wedding, but who was kidding who here. If they didn't end up married Elsie would be very shocked. And promptly try to sabotage their weddings to other people, but nobody needed to know that.

Unfortunately, she didn't really know anyone here besides Echo, Tanya, Tanya's mother, Tanya's brother, and now Tanya's father. Oh, and Dave, since Tanya had insisted he attend as well. That had been really rather sweet of her, but she knew it was probably so she would be forced to slow dance with him at some point. But, maybe that wasn't such a bad thing. He wasn't that bad at it, and there was something she'd decided she wanted to ask him, anyways. Dave had been neutral about coming, and just said the last wedding he had been invited to was his father's, to his new wife, at the end of the summer, and that he and his mum had flushed the invitation down the toilet. Which had apparently promptly gotten lodged in the pipes and flooded their bathroom, but it was the thought that counted, since his dad was, as he put it, the closest a human had ever gotten to being a literal piece of s**t.

Dave was not exactly the biggest supporter of the whole 'marriage!' thing. It had sort of lost it's allure- not that it had much allure for a prepubescent boy- when his dad had abruptly decided he didn't want to be married, or be his dad anymore, for that matter, and left. Occasionally, they got emails. He might have marked them as spam so he didn't have to see them anymore. The time for reconciliation, as far as he was concerned, had been a long time ago. He didn't have it in him to care anymore. He kept telling himself, that, anyways. His dad was remarried now and his mum was still single, though she went out on dates that she tried to hide from him sometimes, like if he saw her with a bloke he'd go psycho. It was her life- as long as he didn't have to pretend one of them was some sort of stand in father figure, he didn't mind. It was weird as hell to see your mum getting dressed up for a guy, but he wasn't freaking out over it.

He knew no one was at this wedding other than Elsie, so he was sticking with her. Well, he knew Tanya and Echo, but they were doing their thing a little ways away and he doubted Elsie was about to drag him over to chat with them at the moment when they were being all coupley. He wasn't used to being so dressed up, either. A school uniform was one thing, formal wedding wear was another. Elsie though... he swallowed hard. She looked like an ice queen, blue and silver and gleaming. As taller than him as ever, of course, but he'd gotten over that a long time ago. It wasn’t really a source of embarrassment for him, at 5’7”, to be seen beside her, at 5’9”. Besides, he was still growing. She was pretty much done.

“I have zero experience with these things,” he announced bluntly. “So did you want to dance or get cake or what?” Honestly, he wanted cake. He was starving, and the ceremony had seemed to stretch on forever, but maybe that was just him. He wouldn’t know, now would he?

“Well,” Elsie said thoughtfully. “I do like dancing. But the cake is probably delicious.”

“It had better be,” he said haughtily. “With all this,” he made a gesture at the decorations and the setting and the guests, particularly the Whitethornes, who as far as he could tell, were pretty well off. Knowing his family he’d end up married years from now in a dingy church basement or some town hall with two illegitimate kids and a mistress on the side already. It wasn’t like he or Elsie would still be together then- they weren’t even together right now, he reminded himself yet again. How many couples actually lasted out of school, anyways? Even if he and Elsie were to get together right now, it couldn’t possibly last. He could fantasize about things all he liked, but the reality was that he’d grown up in f***ing Cokeworth and she’d grown up in a bloody manor house. Yeah. He might be an exciting trip to the bad side of the tracks now, but in five or so years he’d just be a loser who’d never fully belong in this weirdo world with this weirdo girl who looked like she’d stumbled out of a fairy tale and talked to him like he was actually anywhere near deserving of her.

“Dave. Dave. David. David Adam Shoichet.” Elsie was patiently repeating his name, looking bemused. He jerked at the sound of his middle name, his father’s name, and glared. “What? You didn’t make up your mind.”

“Yes I did,” she smiled secretively, gaze darting around for a moment or two. He rolled his own eyes but hoped she’d chosen the cake. “Well? What’s it gonna be?”

She was blushing prettily, and then she stepped closer to him, though they were already close enough that they brushed against one another, limp hands occasionally colliding, and kissed him so quick he barely got used to it before she leaned away. “You, I think.”

He stared at her for a moment, and then burst out laughing. “Was that- Jesus. You’re never living that one down. I swear to God you’re not.” She looked offended before giggling a little and looking around guiltily. “Be quiet,” she whined like a child. “I was going to ask you properly- I really was, Dave, but then I thought about it some more and-,”

“For Chrissake just kiss me again,” he cut her off impatiently, and edged back into a probably not secluded enough corner with her, deciding the cake could wait.

So underneath the concrete sky, she puts her hand in mine. She says, "Life's a game we're meant to lose. But stick by me and I will stick by you."
