spaceThe sequence of events that had led to Rory following Jack into what he assumed was his parent's house had happened a bit too quickly for him to really follow. He wasn't overly worried about it, however, because he was reasonably certain he wasn't about to be axe-murdered, and Jack had promised drinks. Teatime with his Mum evidently meant rum, which wasn't like any teatime with Mum Rory would've ever envisioned, but then again, his own had been dead long enough he could be forgiven for not knowing if it was standard. In any case, Rory was not one to turn down free drinks, even if it had just been tea. Assuming it was good tea, anyway. And food, which he had also been promised. Which was good, because the woman had interrupted them on the way to lunch.
spaceStill, Rory knew well enough to know that Jack had probably not thought this through. The guy could be a little dense at times, and frequently jumped first and considered the consequences later. In this case, he had a feeling it was going to occur to him, oh, probably about five seconds after his mother and Rory were in the same room. Or, maybe ten seconds. It would probably take him five just for the realization that they were in the same room to sink in.
spaceRory, of course, was choosing to be an excellent boyfriend, and not point this out to him, for maximum hilarity. It would be a fun story to tell their grandchildren, or something, if they actually stayed together and got married and had kids who then also had their own kids. Then again, he wasn't sure that he was parent material. He was probably decent grandparent material, though, since a solid half of the grandparents he knew were incurable pranksters who got away with everything by dint of being the oldest people in the room. Even Cal had developed a sense of humor after Leslie was born.
spaceFor now, he just shoved his hands in his pockets, the very picture of innocence. He wasn't sure if Jack expected him to, like, behave himself. Or, rather, would've expected it, if this were an actual planned event like meeting your boyfriend's parents usually was. He probably wouldn't have thought far enough ahead to request Rory be on his best behavior either way, but in this case, he doubted if Jack had even taken a second to consider that this could, in fact, be a disaster. Rory wasn't really "meeting the parents" material, either. But, he did like Jack, maybe loved him, which was why he'd agreed to this in the first place. But like hell was he going to act like anything other than himself. Still, himself wasn't always an a*****e. Just most of the time. "Nice place," he said with a smirk, eyeballing the decor. He meant it, he really did, in the way he thought most people's houses were nice. Not his style, a bit boring, but hey. Not everyone could be as obnoxious as he was.

✪✪✪Jack had actually completely forgotten about his and his mum's arranged tea dates which, if anyone actually knew him, wasn't a complete surprise. It's the reason he carries a pad of sticky notes with him now which pretty much exists in nearly every pocket of jeans, jackets, and backpacks he owns. But he had a totally valid reason for forgetting this time since a, it'd been literal months since their last date and b, he was with Rory and time was a figment of imagination when he was with him. Had only five minutes passed or was it a week? Guess we'll never know. As it were, they'd been on their way to getting something to eat when he got the call from his mum reminded him of the day. He'd tried to-politely mind!-tell her he had company but she'd just audibly scoffed and told him to take a quick shower and put on pants to come drink and sit. It had been a very slight kinda funny joke when he'd asked if he could bring said company but she'd gotten so excited about him bringing someone over (and then understandably upset when she delightedly told him she'd bring out the nice china since oh he sees how it is the nice stranger gets the nice stuff but her OWN CHILD gets plain jane chipped mugs he.sees.how.this.is.) that he'd totally missed why she'd be so excited.
Jack had promptly told Rory of their changed plans-mostly by convincing him with good drinks, free food, and decent company-and simply apparated them to his childhood home. Jack will admit he would've felt slightly bad for missing it if only for the way he always instinctively relaxed whenever he was here. Forgoing any type of polite manner, he led Rory into his home with only a loud "MA WE'RE HERE." not immediately spotting his mother.
"I can hear just fine! I'll be out in a bit, make yourself comfortable!" Jack snorted at her loud reply knowing the latter part was purely for Rory's sake since she would've usually just ignored him and just joined him on the couch. He chuckled a bit at the other's compliment knowing he was probably imaging ways he would've done it different. "Thanks. Poor mum and dad had their hands full trying to keep it in once piece with the three of us together." he quietly cackled remembering the chaos that came with him and his two siblings. How Izzy hadn't actually committed siblicide he'll never know.
It was the exact second his buttock hit the couch that he realized What Was About To Happen. His boyfriend (he could call Rory that right?; they were exclusive he stayed over at the other's pretty often if not every time he was back in the country, he was more than pretty sure he actually kinda loved him (which was a whole other level of terrifying giddiness) but he also wanted to make sure the other was aware of this before saying it out loud) was about to meet his mother who only knew her son was regularly seeing someone by the acronym of SPHBSA. Soo...he'd accidentally set up a meet the parents both without realizing it and without give Rory any type of notice. Ohhhh he was the biggest ******** idiot! The shock was now visibly on Jack's face as he turned to explain his thought process to Rory but was interrupted by a small noise of surprise as his mum finally entered the room.
Tanna merely glanced between the two of them once and for a few seconds before her grin widened and she placed the tea platter on the coffee table before them. "Well this is a lovely surprise! I get to finally see my son and catch up with one of my most talented former student! How is it you two came to know each other?" s**t s**t ******** a tit screw a kangaroo

spaceWhen Tanna entered the room, Rory decided, quite magnanimously, that Jack could get a pass on being dumb this time. He'd seen the exact moment the other man had realized what was transpiring, the second the panic started to set in, and had been more than ready to tease him over it. Now, though, he supposed he'd have to be nice, because apparently his boyfriend wasn't the only idiot in the room. Then again, his mum could've told Jack that, seeing as she knew Rory pretty damn well. Hm. Well, there went making a good impression, he supposed. She had always liked him as a student, even with all the trouble he caused, but no telling if that meant he got a pass on being her son's boyfriend.
spaceWell, there was nothing for it, anyway. Rory debated for a second, letting Jack field the "how did you meet" question, but he didn't really fancy lying about it, and didn't want to chance that Jack would make something up in a panic. He'd probably backtrack and tell the truth in a while, but no sense letting him tell the lie in the first place. "Good tae see ye, Professor H. An', karaoke bar," Rory confessed with a small smirk. "Bought 'im a drink." Well, it wasn't like the woman who evidently had rum-filled tea times with her son, whose family had owned a pub growing up, would have a problem with that, anyway. Tanna had never struck him as the hypocritical sort.
spaceOf course, he didn't know jack squat about the man's father, so that might prove more problematic. Maybe he could coast along on Tanna liking him enough that the couple wouldn't totally hate the fact that he was dating their kid. He took the older man's hand and gave it a firm shake, waiting to see if this was going to turn into some hyper-masculine contest of strength like it often did. He hoped not; he didn't play games like that. "Rory Murdoch," he said, "Jack's boyfriend, an' one o' yer wife's best students." This last bit was said with a wink at the woman in question. "'Course, she was me best professor, as well." That wasn't even a lie; Rory hadn't liked most of his teachers. Maybe not even any of them. But Tanna had always been the exception.

✪✪✪Jack wanted to die. Actually no, y'know what. If he died that meant he'd have to meet Papa Ghede and that d**k would think this situation is so hilarious that he'd be forced to endure it for all eternity so ******** that. But honestly which deity did he piss off that not only did he stupidly walk Rory into an accidental meet-cute with his mom but that his dad would actually be home as well and turned into an accidental ********. He groaned inwardly, and a little outward because he couldn't help it, when his dad went to shake hands (like Rory was his date to the drive in or whatever his parents had done in their youth) and introduce himself as his dad. Because surely a random older dude in his parents house couldn't possibly....actually nevermind with his family it was always a possibility.
On one hand he was happy Rory didn't allow him to try and makeup something on how they met because he most definitely would've ******** it up spectacularly. But on the other, he had to pout as his mum giggled as she was told about the karaoke bar where they'd first met. "How sweet. I do hope my son was able to return the favor." she gave him a pointed look causing him to huff because uh. Duh! "Yeah!...mostly!" he couldn't very well tell his mother the true ways he'd been able to make it up to his now boyfriend. They discussed allot but they definitely drew the line there.
Her grinned brightened however as Rory introduced himself to her husband, tacking on the best student mantel (which he probably was and Jack was saying this with about 45% bias because he'd seen bits and pieces of the other's art and he can for sure say that his man was a talented genius) as well as her own as being his best professor. He'd def gives and EE for effort in the schmoozing. "Aww, you're too kind Mr. Murdoch. Or Rory if you'd like seeing as we're far beyond the professor/student model." she amended while Jack gave a nervous chuckle of his own.
It had honestly slipped his mind that Rory would've definitely had his mom for a professor but like. Who brings up parentage or their occupations when you're convincing the lowkey love of your life that yes this is the restaurant no its not condemned yes it's supposed to look like that why are you running away I promise you're not going to get tetanus! "So uh, what's the spread for today, mum?" Jack asked looking over the still steaming tea and platter of finger foods in front of them. "Ah, it's a special orange pekoe black tea variety. Your grandparents brought some back from their visit to Sri Lanka last time. It's a very robust flavor which I think will go very nicely with the spiced rum. It's just under a shot so no real worries about becoming intoxicated." Tanna directed the last comment towards Rory with an easy grin as she distributed the cups to each available hand.
"And it's just the usual cinnamon twists and finger sandwiches, nothing truly special. I wish I'd had some more time then I might've been able to do more." she said pointedly making her son very thankful he hadn't yet taken a sip but was still choking from her passive aggressive tone. "Ha. Right. Time." he added unhelpfully. He wondered if he could slip into the kitchen to add a few fingers more of that rum...

spaceRory snorted slightly at Jack's horrible recovery, then shrugged at his mother. "He didnae on tha' particular nigh', bu' he's more'n made up fer i' since. Only righ', seein' as he's go' himself a proper job an' I'm barely above a starvin' artis' these days." That was an exaggeration, of course; he had a job, a real one, with a steady paycheck, more or less. Only trouble was that those paychecks were pretty lean most of the time, since the theater was still small and not putting on many shows. He was hopeful, though, that in time they'd get successful enough that he would be making decent money.
spaceHe was relieved, of course, that neither of Jack's parents seemed put off by how they'd met. He hadn't figured on his boyfriend being the sort to cover stuff like that up, really, but you could never tell with him. They took it in stride, though, which was about all he could hope for. It meant it was less likely he'd put his foot in his mouth in a way that forever damaged his relationship with them. Of course, Tanna knew him as a teen, and he'd been a lot worse back then.
spaceAt Mr. Hawthorne's comment, he gave a short bark of a laugh, then winked. "No' tae worry, sir," he told him, "She's lovely an' all, bu' nae me type. Gay as th' day is long." At the older man's behest, he found a spot to get comfortable, making sure there was room for Jack nearby. He shot Tanna a fake-pout. "Damn, an' here I was hopin' tae get pished," he said with a wink, taking the tea gratefully. Then snickered at her pointed comment at Jack. No wonder the guy could put up with him, if this is what his own parents were like all the time.

✪✪✪Jack gave a mock gasp as Rory told his parents he hadn't firstly paid him back but then promptly blushed to his ears when he mentioned he'd made up for it since. Though he did snort at his starving artist quip; he knew he wasn't making the big bucks yeah but he was far from destitute. The groan and look he gave his dad though from his quote unquote joke about his boyfriend hitting on his mom like first of all, gross to the highest extreme and second they had already discussed his "if I ever chose a woman" and his mom, while lovely, hadn't made the list. All of a sudden the last few minutes swarmed up to meet him and he quickly turned to Rory with an embarrassingly high pitched squeak of "boyfriend."
It really shouldn't have been this shocking; they'd been seeing each other monogamously for months now, he had long given Rory a key to his place and vice versa and were even jokingly contemplating moving in together. He says jokingly because he's long had the paperwork to have the other man added to his lease for a few weeks at best and had been attempting to find words that rhymed well with belt, sheer, and purple for his proposal to be complete. And Gods wasn't he glad he had already swallowed his bite of cookie or else he would've choked at that idea. Not that he was opposed! He wasn't! Definitely wasn't! It was just...the guy nearly killed him calling him "boyfriend!" Jack was sure he'd be a puddle of molten ooze if he ever worked up to "husband." Let him breathe!
Tanna was giving her son a mix between worried and exasperated looks before sending Rory a grateful smile while also pushing the plate of food closer to him. He had been promised free food after all. "I'm sorry to disappoint but I'm sure if you still around long enough you'll make due." she and Jack shared a chuckle. While no they didn't get smashed, they did occasionally reach a point where there ended up being more rum in their tea than leaves. But those times usually happened after breakups or a particularly bad testing cycle which was thankfully few and far between. "So! Besides dating our son, what have you been up to? I hope you're still sticking, at least partially, to something creative being my best student and all." she grinned into her cup while Jack immediately jumped in due to praising his boyfriend-BoYfRiEnD-being one of his favorite pastimes.
"He does and they're great! He works at one of the newer theaters in Wales, you should absolutely go btw, it's small but they're fantastic which I mean, of course they are cause Rory does the sets. And not just that, he still paints and they're bloody amazing like he's fu-sorry, freaking brilliant ma. Which...I suppose you kinda already know." he added apologetically sniggering for his almost slip.
