Pembroke is an historic settlement and former county town of Pembrokeshire in west Wales. It is noted for the being the birthplace of King Henry VII of England, the first monarch of the house of Tudor, and the last king to win his throne in battle. The remains of his birthplace, Pembroke Castle, are still standing in the town. Pembroke is located on the south Pembrokeshire peninsula, by the estuary of the river Cleddau. Pembroke town is located at the bottom of a small valley, flanked on all sides by woodland and arable farmland. The town is 8 miles, or 13 km, south of the county town of Haverfordwest, and 75 miles, or 121 km, west of the capital of Wales, Cardiff. The town has an annual Pembroke Festival and a fortnightly farmers market. The Pembroke Rugby Club organises the town's annual carnival, usually held in June. The town is also home to Pembroke Cricket Club and the origin of Pembroke Welsh Corgis, which were bred as animal herders.
