While they are a family, the Boneblossoms aren't really a combined group. They share the surname and, for most, that's about it. The members of the herd are typically independent, scattered around the lands and only coming together for certain events that have a large impact on the family (death, birth etc'). That isn't to say they don't feel love for one another. Each member knows other members by name and sight even if they haven't met before. Some may form smaller herds within the family and group together for safety or just companionship.

The family is neither good or evil; they are happily neutral. The personalities among the family vary differently across the board. Typically, this is because the parents of children born into the family don't typically raise any offspring - instead leaving them to raise themselves and be shaped by the world and others around them. That being said, anyone truly evil who is giving the family a bad name is shunned and removed from the family; all ties with them cut. Most tend to avoid breeding with others of this nature to avoid that - it's very rare to find those bred from an unhappy union - in this current generation such a union has yet to occur.

The family is omnivorous; they can live on a diet of meat, plant life or both if they so choose. Most prefer meat but they make a point to not over hunt species or areas and most try to only eat those that are no longer strong enough or able to breed. They are humane in their killings. Food is food not a toy.

Most Boneblossoms have some sort of quirk or oddity about them. They generally have a fascination with death or other macabre things. To simplify them, they're a lovable bunch of oddballs who may come across as loonies but are generally harmless.

There are very few traditions exclusive to the family as a whole - some members may have their own familial traditions they participate in but as a whole these are the ones that all members of the family must participate in (if available, that is).

xxxxThe Garden
The Garden is the center for most of the Boneblossom traditions. It's centered around life and death within the herd and while the family is not overly religious in that they don't worship or pray to a specific God; The Garden is considered a sacred place to them. The location is kept secret for this very reason and is only known to those in the family. It is cared for by members of the family and, because the family is rather nomadic, the role of Garden Keeper is rotated amongst the family members (and the schedule is.. pretty sporadic it's basically like 'tag, you're it!' until another member comes along). The Garden Keeper is also in charge of keeping logs of the family members - a family tree as well as any other important information specific to the family.

It's also considered a place for healing and reflection. A family member may come here for guidance from the family or help with an ailment. Many pregnant family members make the journey here to give birth so that they may be around family (in the form of their flowers) while bringing life into the world. Because of this, most family members who spend time in The Garden are considered adept with herbology and the like.

xxxxNaming Flowers
All members of the Boneblossom family have a naming flower. Whether they go by this name or another is regardless, all members have one. Some have it as a primary name, some as a secondary and others see it as something special and as a secret that should be kept amongst family only. It is dependent on the family and the individual (for example, naming traditions may intermix depending on the partner and so the naming flower will become secondary - but it's not treated as such. Most Boneblossoms will refer to a member's flower name over any other name unless specifically requested.

Naming flowers are typically not repeated unless it has been generations since the name has been used or the owned of the name has passed on. While it started as flowers it's now moved on to include most plant life (trees, herbs and the like). The origins for the Naming Flower have long since been lost but it's a tradition that is ingrained in the family and is one of the few that are enforced. Failing to have a Naming Flower is basically the same as not existing in the family.

When born and assigned a naming flower, parents and any other relatives in the area travel to the Garden to plant the flower for the children among all the other plants. This symbolises their arrival into the family. While their, family records are taken down by the current Garden Keeper. Formalities are followed by a large celebration that can be as simple as a shared meal or as extravagant as a large party (the largest of which lasted eleven days when four sets of children were welcomed into the family).

xxxxDeath
Death is not seen as a sad time within the family. Boneblossoms prefer to focus on the fact that someone lived rather than the fact that they died. The death of someone in the family is the only time the whole family will come together and is required to do so even if they didn't personally meet them.

Direct relations to the family are invited into The Garden first where the deceased's naming flower is removed. The flowers are dried out, pressed and one is placed on display while the others are handed out down the relations from closest to farthest distance. The number of flowers handed out is dependent on how long the deceased has lived. Every member of the family may get a flower or only one may be given out.

Beliefs in the family aren't religious but just.. general things that are accepted. These aren't enforced and there are exceptions, of course.

xxxxLove is.. whatever
Love in the family is.. rather odd. Most will never settle down with one partner - some may, in their later years after traipsing around the lands choose one partner to settle down with but it's still quite rare. They may be considered promiscuous by outsiders but a mare having children by multiple partners (or by unknown fathers) is not something that is frowned upon. They shared love for a moment and it produced the greatest gift of all - life. Love is not something that is discriminated against regardless of sexuality, race or what have you (the exception to this, of course, being skinwalkers. A mare who claims to be in love with an uncharmed walker is usually taken to The Garden until she is 'cured' of this infliction).

xxxxChildren
Children, once they reach a certain stage of independence, are typically left to raise and fend for themselves. They are usually left in The Garden with the current Garden Keeper so that they may learn basic survival skills but this is all they are taught and, unless it is a trait that is deemed dangerous, the Garden Keeper leaves them to make their own decisions and develop their own personalities without influence. This is not to say the parents don't love their children. They will seek them out when they believe they are ready or, should a child decide to follow their parents, they will not be sent away. They prefer to leave the decision up to their children rather than making it for them - the only decision parents make is their Naming Flower.

There are exceptions, of course. Some families - typically those that are with lifemated partners - set up base close to The Garden so that they may raise their children themselves before they go out into the world.

The Petalwings are distantly related to the Boneblossoms - a branching of the family lines a few generations back. It is forgotten, the reason for their splitting and while at one point it may have been hostility, they now are friendly with each other and are trying to bring the bonds of family closer. During Boneblossom ceremonies, at least one of the sisters will visit and they will often send gifts to pregnant mothers awaiting birth of their foals.

The Petalwings are not nomadic like their cousins - they instead live in a hidden grove and rarely leave it; relying, instead, on visitors for company. Any travellers that stumble upon their territory, they are blindfolded and lead to the grove where they are entertained and looked after for as long as the sisters see fit. It is not uncommon for children to come as a result of these visitors. When the sisters decide the visitors have stayed long enough, they are blindfolded and guided safely out of the territory - usually in a completely new direction so they can't find their way back. It is rare for an outside to become a permanent member of the Grove and it is only done so at the approval of all three sisters. If one disapproves, the outside is to leave and none may protest.

Despite being small in stature, kalona blood runs through the sister's veins and they are quite capable of taking care of themselves and are fierce when it comes to protecting their home. Many tell stories of the beautiful fairies in the forest who steal away stallions and twist their minds. The sisters make no effort to correct these rumors.
