For some reason, life always led Yksivarinen back to the slave dens. He'd thought, somewhat naively, that when he became a Royal Guard he'd be gone from them. But he was still low class. He did get to do a lot more things, but every morning the monochrome male still returned here to sleep.

But this time he was on an actual assignment. He had to visit the Slave Father - Unyezi - and ask some Very Important Questions. Like where Orion was. And what should happen to a low class lion who actually kills a member of a higher class. And which side Halili was on.

"Unyezi?" the younger lion called out, hoping he wasn't interrupting anything.

The darker life in the Mwezi'Johari became, the more old and tired Unyezi felt. He had hope for the rebels, even though he could not voice it.. but he was doubting how much of this he could take. It was starting to seem like the pride would never know peace, though he knew that this would come for the murderous king eventually. Even Shangyue had to know that.

Considering recent events, he was grateful to be responsible for the slaves. More than ever before in living memory, they needed someone to speak on their behalf and he was more than happy to oblige. It was Nerit's responsibility, too, but he was happy to encourage her role to remain less political in a time like this. He cared very much about the pride but her safety was still most important to him.

He'd been waiting for someone to come looking for him after what happened with Orion, he was surprised to find that it was Yksivarinen. A good lion caught up in the wrong side but still an enthusiastic, dutiful Royal Guard.. it would be easier than dealing with some of the others, but harder in other ways.

"Icky," Unyezi said, emerging from his den and greeting the former slave with an old nickname.

He'd had a good speech prepared. Well, maybe not a speech, but still! He'd known what he was going to say to Unyezi. But the moment the older lion spoke, it all escaped at the sound of his old nickname. That hated nickname. The younger male winced visibly.

"Please, Unyezi. Yksivarinen. Or, just 'Varinen," he offered, hopefully. Ugh, he really really wished people would just stop calling him "Icky".

"So, um, I'm supposed to be asking you questions," 'Varinen continued doggedly, trying to get back to the subject of why he was here. What were the questions again?

Unyezi offered a sympathetic smile, trying to make this whole thing easier- on himself and on Yksivarinen. If it had been anybody else, it would have been much harder. He took a seat opposite the other lion as he started trying to figure out how to start up the interrogation he was sent here for.

"Orion is not here, if that's why you've been sent, Yksivarinen," he offered helpfully, his expression becoming more serious- and a little bit sad.

"He...he isn't?" 'Varinen replied dumbly. Well, no, of course Orion wasn't here. His location was one of the questions the grey male had been ordered to find an answer to. "I mean," he continued, "do you know where he is?" He really hoped it wasn't with the Rebels. Wherever they were. The King hadn't yet managed to pinpoint their location, but as son as he did, all the Guards and Royal Guards would surely be sent to kill them.

"And what about Halili?" he added, trying to be casual about his needful interrogation.

With a deep sigh and a long pause as he appraised the Royal Guard standing before him, Unyezi revealed only as much as he knew would be readily apparent to the King if he or anybody else bothered to look around a bit instead of seeking answers from a should-be cooperate slave leader.

"Orion has left the slave dens, he hasn't been back since he killed Tyfu," he said, "Halili remains loyal to the King and in her home here with us."

"But didn't somone see where he went?" the younger lion pressed the older. He'd been pretty sure that Orion wasn't in the slave dens, else why would the King ask him to ask Unyezi instead of just going to find Orion? The Slave Father's position did help the low class focus their petitions and provide a central authority figure, but in almost every case it was easier to look for an individual directly if you needed to talk to him.

"You've spoken to Halili then?" 'Varinen asked. That was good news, and he'd be happy to take it back with him. But he wanted to be sure. If he was wrong, well, even if Tyfu was gone, Firaga wasn't. And the black lion scared him silly.

"The direction won't help you," he said, "The slave dens are near the center of the pride, every direction goes somewhere within the pride before it goes to the borders."

It had only been a few days but that would be more than enough, too, for Orion to change course and decide where he was going. If Shangyue sent someone expecting to find Unyezi hiding his grandson, they were out of luck. Unyezi knew Orion would not leave the pride, but that piece of information would not be offered freely to the King or his messenger.

"I haven't spoken to Halili, but Nerit has checked in on her," he said, carefully avoiding any confession of having spoken to Orion himself, "She knows the risks of staying here after what her mate did, but she doesn't agree with him and so she's stayed despite that."

He knowingly simplified the situation, hoping it would help convince the king that Halili was not worth targeting. She would be the only lion in the pride who might be in danger and refusing to take any precaution.

"Oh, that's right," Yksivarinen replied, shoulders slumping as Unyezi pointed out the obvious problem with asking what direction someone went from the slave dens. He should've remembered that. So he focused on what the older lion said about Halili. Well, that sounded all right then.

But now he remembered there was a third question to ask. Related to the first one, of course, but more important in some ways. The monochrome lion was silent for a few minutes as he tried to remember and work out what he was going to say.

"Unyezi, as Slave Father, yours is the primary responsibility for all lions of the Low Class," 'Varinen spoke slowly to make sure everyhting was right, and smart, and formal. Ish. "What do you think the punishment should be for a slave who kills a lion of a higher class?"

Unyezi smiled when 'Varinen realized the futility of asking after Orion, and seemed to accept that the conversation about Halili was done. He had some small hope that it was over then, but he could see the wheels in 'Varinen's head turning as he worked out what he needed to ask next. The Royal Guard was careful and earnest, but Unyezi recognized the threat.

It took him a moment to formulate an answer. He had to weigh his options well. Did he want to be openly hostile towards the King, hint at the irony of the question being put forward.. did he answer the question simply, or force context into the situation?

"A Prince once killed a King and Queen and we gave him the throne," he said, choosing to return the subtle threat and saying nothing else. The serious expression on his face made it clear he had nothing else to say on that matter.

'Varinen flinched at the reminder of how the King had come to be so. It was...not a pretty story, and the Rebels could use it well against him. But that was not what he'd come for and damnit, he was going to do as he'd been told and get all the answers!

"A Hunter nearly killed a Slave and he was evicted from the pride," the younger lion said quietly in response, remembering an older story. He hadn't known the white lion in question that well, being of a younger generation, but it had been something of a big deal at the time, though most seemed to have forgotten it now. Well, given the King's story, it was hardly surprising. The ruling family was far more influential than any other.

The elderly lion's good humour for the bumbling Royal Guard was spent and he remained serious when pressed. Part of him was surprised that 'Varinen wouldn't give up, another part of him was glad it was the one Royal Guard least likely to threaten violence.. and that gave him more liberty with his answers. More opportunity to be truthful.

"That hunter may be lucky that the slave wouldn't fight back," he responded simply, "Do you suppose that Tyfu would have been exiled if she had succeeded in killing Orion?"

He let the question sit for a few seconds- long enough to sink in but not long enough to let the other lion give an answer. This was all-around ridiculous.

"I know the answer he's looking for," Unyezi went on grimly, "He wants Orion dead and he has an excuse now. It's not what I would recommend, but he doesn't really want my recommendation."

The younger lion's mouth twisted as Unyezi refused to give the answer that he needed most. He knew what the King would have said if the other of the two combatants had survived - nothing. Although...

"She never killed anyone...in the pride," 'Varinen offered at last when the older male pointed out how little his words were actually desired. He'd added the caveat because the monochrome male couldn't quite believe that the dark lioness had never killed in her life. But it was worth stating that no Mwezi'Johari had died beneath her claws. It meant that Orion, Shangyue, and her own son Chunyue were in a distinctly different category from her.

"Not for lack of trying," Unyezi said, his tone becoming moderately more aggressive at the remark that Tyfu was somehow more innocent because she had no victims known to them. He had spoken to Uchanjaa and Orion both, he knew what happened to Umepatwa, he had heard what was going on all over the pride. For Shangyue to think he still actually had control and authority at a time like this was laughable. Whatever sentence he passed on Orion, it would not be carried out easily.

"You have my answer, take it back to the King," he said, "If he truly wants my advice, he can come talk to me himself."

"But it's not an answer!" the younger male cried out. He knew Unyezi wasn't happy about a lot of things, but that was no reason to make things more difficult! Sure, 'Varinen wasn't stupid enough to think that the King wanted any answer other than Orion's life for Tyfu. But it was awfully hard to offer a good argument if Unyezi wouldn't give him a good answer!

Of course, in order to perform any punishment, Orion would have to be found first. And the Slave Father hadn't been much help there either, but that wasn't really his fault.
