Ever since the Hunters' Strike, Nyeusi had looked much less like the crazed prophet she'd been for the two years prior. Her black fur was groomed, her eyes weren't always wide open, and she'd stopped wearing her bone adornments.

Anyone who saw her now might be forgiven for thinking nothing had changed in the past moons. The lioness wore no bones, but her fur was matted and tangled and covered in blood. Especially her face and neck. Some of it, upon closer examination, was her own. But not all of it, not even most of it.

"Vesper!" she hissed, looking around for the white lion. Eyes wide and her whisper just a little too loud, Nyeusi sounded like the mad prophet once again.

Vesper was on patrol-- not as an actual guard but as part of the rebels. As the conflict continued, it was becoming much more common for him (and others) to starting slipping from official duty to the semi-organized chaos the rebels currently existed in. Luckily for Nyeusi, this made his whereabouts reasonably easy to predict-- but he was not alone. There were other rebels with him.. but he slowly fell away from them, a confused look on his face. He could have sworn he heard someone say his name.

He looked around, searching for the source.

Good news, she'd found him. Bad news, he wasn't alone. Worse news, she couldn't be certain of the loyalties of everyone in the patrol group, which meant she had to get Vesper alone. But she didn't have time to wait for him to finish.

"Vesper!" she hissed again, a bit louder this time. As she waited for him to paky attention, to lose the group, to come over to where she stood, Nyeusi was fidgeting, shredding the greenery beneath her claws.

She'd forgotten about the blood that adorned her, forgotten that she was bleeding, forgotten everything except for the body lying somewhere behind her and her desperate need to consult with Vesper about it.

Vesper spotted Nyeusi very suddenly, but the state of her made him do a double-take. Something was very obviously wrong, but he wasn't close enough to make it out. Still, Nyeusi had been much better lately but the times when she had made less sense were still close enough in the past that he didn't immediately jump to a panic.

He looked back to his companions, offering a shrug when one turned to see where he had gone, giving a nod for them to continue without him. As they went on, he turned back to his dark, panicked friend and walked calmly over.

"Nyeusi, what's going on?"

The scent of blood hit him very suddenly, making him wonder how he had missed it- how any of them had missed it. It was his first clue that something was very, very wrong.

Vesper was here. Vesper was here and he would stand between her and any problems, like he'd done for so long. The black lioness relaxed completely, breathing easily and calmly for the first time since she'd released the purple lioness' throat from her mouth.

"I killed Mari," she informed the male simply. The calmness of her words was now completely add odds with her disheveled appearance as well as the near-hysteria that had colored his name when she'd called it mere moments before.

Vesper stared at Nyeusi for a long, silent moment, his mouth open as if he was about to speak but no words immediately came. She'd killed Mari, the King's daughter, a sister to three already grieving monsters. It explained the blood and urgency, but her sudden calm was a shock.

"Wh- what?" he stammered, looking Nyeusi up and down now that he was close enough to really assess her physical condition. She was bleeding but there was too much blood, it couldn't be all her's.

"What happened?"

"She attacked me again," Nyeusi said, paying no attention whatsoever to Vesper's examination. Her eyes were distant, playing over the events of earlier that night. "She waited until you were nowhere near and attacked. I told her that if it was the Great Lion's will to use me to dispose of threads, I wouldn't gainsay Him."

She stated it matter-of-factly, greatly relaxed in the male's presence. Yes, the Huntress was, as proven, perfectly capable of taking care of herself. But when Vesper was around, she didn't have to. Thank the Great Lion for Vesper.

More silence followed Nyeusi's answer. It was a perfectly reasonable one, all said. Of course Mari was going to attack her again, that was clear from the start.. that she had managed to catch Nyeusi alone and lost said a great deal about each lioness. His shock slowly turned to a mix of dread and awe.

"You surely have the Great Lion on your side, Nyeusi," he said, "I happen to stumble upon two assassination attempts and you turn the third around completely."

Assuming those were the only attempts that got so far as confrontation, but he doubted Nyeusi would keep them a secret.. not on purpose, at least.

"Vesper," she replied, some sanity and panic returning to her expression, "What do I do with Mari?" As if the purple lioness was lying asleep, and not dead. Nyeusi had no idea what to do with the body.

Surely Vesper would know. She couldn't think past finding Vesper and the safety and understanding he defined. Still couldn't think past it. Had absolutely no idea what tomorrow night would be like.

With an almost regretful look past Nyeusi, Vesper shook his head in response to her question. Killing another lion was a terrible act, even in self defense. In any other situation, there might have been cause to treat the fallen lioness with some respect.. but that was absolutely not the case now. They were at war.

"Leave her, someone will find her," he said finally, deciding it would be worse to hide the truth, "We need to tell Ota what happened. Mari was hellbent on revenge, her brothers will be now."

The King was now down one loyal follower and two children. Rumor was that he had taken in Tyfu's children when she was killed, if that was true then they were in for some trouble. They might be beyond more subtle conflict now.

The black lioness frowned, blue eyes sensible once more as she pondered Vesper's words. Ota? A fellow Huntress in the same class, Nyeusi certainly knew who Ota was. The older lioness was the mother of Vesper's children, among other things. But she couldn't think of a reason why they would go to her about this.

"Why Ota?" she asked. "What about Kamia?" She vaguely knew that the other lioness seemed to have something to do with the rebellion. Umepatwa had been much more visible, but unfortunately he was dead too. The other option would probably be her father.

Vesper gave Nyeusi a funny look when she asked about why they should go to Ota, and he almost opened his mouth to answer a completely different question than what she truly meant when she mentioned Kamia. It was a big surprise to realize that for all Nyeusi had done as a rebel, for as involved as he was with her.. she had no idea who was behind the major organization of the rebellion.

It was extremely difficult not to say 'you don't know??' but he knew better than that. He'd already asked one stupid question so far, it was better just to give her the answer.

"She's the real leader behind the rebellion," he explained, "Within the pride, anyway. Kamia, too, but to a lesser extent."

"Oh." The bloodstained black-furred lioness was quiet as she considered the answer she'd been given. That did make sense. It even explained how Umepatwa had been such a focal point. The wonder was that Shangyue hadn't seen it yet.

"Okay then. Let's go talk to Ota," she agreed, smiling up at Vesper.

He returned her smile, making a mental note that she ought to get cleaned up as soon as possible. It was doubtful that trying to tell her to keep what happened a secret would work, but they didn't have to shout it from the treetops.. especially since it was unlikely she would change her ways and agree to stay anywhere safe.

Things were going to get interesting and dangerous with Nyeusi again.
