Q. This is a matriarchal pack, are males mistreated?
Not at all. Males are valued. They simply cannot take the highest rank.

Q. Is this a happy fun pack?
Yes, mostly. These hyenas are not evil, however the way that dominance is decided is through fighting, and so the strongest hyenas will gain the highest ranks. Hyenas can have any type of personalities. Those who don't want to fight just won't take Queen rank

Location: Located amongst a grassy plains

Lay of the Land: Mostly grasslands, the pack also lays claim to a small pond, which is fed by a winding river.

There are no dens used, the hyenas sleep in the grass under the stars. The grunts sleep around the Queen and her family. The Queen's chosen mate will often sleep near the Queen, despite not being of a high rank.

Weather: Hot, hot, hottt during the day - fairly cold at night, which is why they often sleep in close proximity to each other. Huddling in family groups also reinforces familial bonds.

Fauna: The Hyenas, typically scavengers, will scavenge for food along the grassy plains, finding left over kills from lions and other big cats in the area. Some hyenas have taken up hunting, and will hunt the nearby prey beast herds.
Flora: Grass. Everywhere. There are some trees to give shade during the heat of the day, but the landscape is mostly flat and grassy.

The Information

Appearance: There is no requirements of appearance. Any colour and marking may join.
Species: Hyenas only

Marriage: There is no IC ceremony of marriage. Hyenas may take mates as they please.
Breeding: Only the current Queen may breed. Any female caught pregnant will be ousted, and her pups will remain in the pack, under the care of the current queen.

Values & Traditions

Matriarchy Ruled by the Queen, females hold the ruling positions, however males are not mistreated - they are equal citizens but will not hold positions of power. There is no rank for 'King' and any mate of the Queen will retain his current rank, and be expected to pull his own weight around the pack.

The Strongest Rule: The Queen can be challenged at any time by a female of the pack for her rank. Because of this, it is expected that only the strongest female will rule the pack.

Family is Key: The largest family trees in the pack will be considered the most influential families. The more princesses a Queen has, the more successful she is seen to be.

History

The pack has been long-standing, the changing of the Queens bringing new eras as quickly as the past one changes.

Cerise was the former Queen, but after Nzurim'oja joined the pack and was subsequently injured in an attempt to take the throne - her mother Nyata'mtu arrived. Seeing her daughter injured, Nyata challenged Cerise and won the right to be Queen.

Nyata is constantly under threat of Cerise challenging her, and so is trying to form alliances in the pack to keep her position.

Challenging the Queen: Every month, a challenger may attempt to over-throw the current Queen via a battle. If the Queen loses, she will be demoted to 'grunt' and her opponent will become the new Queen.
The new Queen can be challenged the month following her appointment, and challengers (and former Queens) can attempt a new battle each month.
Only one challenger can attempt to overthrow the Queen per month, and it is first-come first-serve.

Queen: (1/1) The ruler of the Pack. The strongest female.

Princesses: (Unlimited) The daughters of the current Queen. Their job is to take care of their sisters, particularly any younger princesses. They are the nannies of the pack, and any illegitimate pups will be cared for by the princesses.

High-Middle Class

Scribe: (0/3) The historians of the pack. They keep track of all of the family trees in the pack.

Medic: (1/5) In a pack dedicated to fighting, medics are highly regarded. They make medicines, grow herbs and treat the wounded.

Grunt: (Unlimited) The bulk of the pack. Either gender may hold this rank. They are the hunters, scavengers, the everything.

Slave: Very unusual. Sometimes when a challenger overthrows a Queen, they may demote them to the Slave rank. Slaves cannot challenge for the Queen rank. They can be 'freed', but only by the current Queen.

Familiars are fine, as long as they're bound to a hyena. No real preference for or against them c:

Nodin would like to join as a grunt. A happy male Nodin is proud to be the son of the queen and does what he can to make her proud.

and Yasen would like to join as a medic. A hard worker Yasen has been able to gain respect for her medical knowledge, unfortunately she isn't much of a fighter. Since her sisters demotion she isn't overly happy with the current queen but she keeps her opinions to herself.
