In the moonlit night, blotches of fur in different shades came together to make up a lion. He sat on his haunches, staring up at the cool light shed by the waxing crescent, the Great Lion's eye slowly opening.

They said that the King had lost the Great Lion's favor, that the Great Lion had ordained his death, and so he'd died. At the claws of his own sons, no less, but that was beside the point. Shangyue was dead, and it seemed quite clear that the Rebels were now taking over the pride.

This meant that most of the pride was giving a hairy eyeball to anyone affiliated with the King, especially Royal Guards.

Which prompted Yksivarinen to be sitting very still tonight, staring up at the moon, trying to figure out what he should be doing now.

Since Shangyue's death, Neema had been very happy. There was still much to figure out, but then.. she had been expecting that, and they all should have been. Perhaps they were after the little introduction to Nketa, it was telling that neither girl had immediately pounced on the opening.. but, left to Lailah, even Neema couldn't guess if that's what the shaman would think was truly best for the pride. She didn't doubt Liuhe would support his older sister's claim. But that wasn't the issue.

All of that aside, Neema was feeling light, free and happy and she was enjoying it. She didn't know how her mother could ever keep this kind of nonsense up for most of her life, but she hadn't been in a situation that required secrecy when she did it. That made the difference.

She was wandering along, wondering if it was time to start trying to prod answers out of Lailah, when she happened upon the still, staring former-guard. Her came to a stop, smiling as she watched him, but not yet approaching.

The royal family was supposed to be the most blessed of all the pride, with the very favor of the Great Lion Himself. So it was very very bad if the rebels were right and the King had lost that favor. Well, maybe they were right. The King was dead, after all. But if that was true, did that mean the Mwezi'Johari was still in trouble, even though the King was dead? Could his...his badness...spread to the rest of the pride?

As a Low class lion, Yksivarinen was protected by the pride as a whole, even though he himself held little favor with the Great Lion. But if the King's badness spread, should he consider trying to leave? The monochromatic male considered this idea. It might not be a bad one, but he really couldn't imagine going through with it. He liked his home. It was all he'd ever known. And there was no guarantee he'd have any kind of protection out there.

The lion sighed gustily, still staring up at the moon. "You're a very hard Lion to read," he told it.

She bit back a laugh as Yksivarinen started talking to the moon. Not that it was an uncommon trait around here, surely everybody spoke to the moon sometimes, but he seemed to sincere, so innocent. That he could have gotten wrapped up in Shangyue's madness was almost unbelievable.. but then, the idea that he wouldn't be swept away by the romantic idea of a king fighting for his pride and elevating the lowest among them.. that was hard to imagine, too.

For all his viciousness, Shangyue had played a smart game up until he let his arrogance and paranoia control him in exactly the wrong circumstances.

"I think that's how all gods work," she said.

Yksivarinen started at the unexpected voice, which was unfortunate given the angle he was holding his head at. There was an unpleasant twinge in his neck as he hastily craned it around to look at the lioness who'd intruded and, consequently, the male was forced to keep his head awkwardly tilted to one side as he turned to look.

"What do you mean? There's the Great Lion. Are you saying there's a...Great Leopard too?" he asked.

"Maybe," she said brightly, "The Great Lion protects us, but there is a whole world outside of the Mwezi'Johari. Surely someone or something watches over them, too."

Perhaps Neema had guessed what was on his mind. All members of the former royal guard were being treated suspiciously, expecting that they might cause a disturbance or desert the pride, so it was no great leap. The only thing was that Neema didn't know how to felt about that. Would the pride be better off without some of the royal guards? Certainly. Everybody was probably hoping Firaga just walked away while they made vague efforts to treat him like he was a part of the pride.

Not Icky, though. He wasn't one who needed to run.. but if he wanted to, did she blame him?

The lion thought about that. Some other not-Great-Lion watching over the non-Mwezi'Johari people? That was a lot of people. He might not know a lot about the outside world, but he was pretty sure it was much more populous that the pride was. Of course, he didn't think the pride was small, but it wasn't the whole world, as the lioness had said.

"That's a lot of people," he said aloud at last. "I think we're better off then, because the Great Lion doesn't have to watch over nearly as many."

"No, but he's sure had his paws full lately, eh?"

She chuckled, though she didn't know how he would handle the joke. Ikwezi and Nina certainly lacked a sense of humour about the situation, even though they had turned in time to avoid some criticism.

"Does that mean you don't plan to run?" she asked curiously, still smiling, "Seems to surprise a lot of lions around here that nobody has tried it yet, they're watching for nothing so far."

"I guess," 'Varinen agreed vaguely, trying to straighten his neck. The lion winced in pain and settled himself again, neck only slightly straighter than before. He wasn't entirely certain why the lioness was laughing, but he offered a weak chuckle in response. That was what he should do, right?

Then the subject turned to a more serious matter, that of running away from the pride. Which required an honest answer.

"Why should I run away from home?" the male asked in bewilderment. "It's home. The Great Lion will protect me here."

"Good question," she said, nodding, "And a good answer."

Of all the former Royal Guards, he ought to be the least suspicious but she wondered about that because he had always seemed the most sincere. It was hard to be treated like a power-hungry slave seeking to wreak havoc and get revenge for your lot in life when you failed so adorably and still kept on trying.. but his sincerity and his dedication was hard to miss.

"You're in a tough spot now, but you'll be OK, Icky."

"Yeah, I guess.." the lion sighed. The lioness was being very nice to him and-hey! Wait a minute! She hadn't...no, she had!

The monochrome male turned to the lioness, trying to glare at her, but mostly only succeeding in looking pained, with his head at an awkward angle because it still hurt too much to try straightening his neck.

"You shouldn't call me that!" he blustered at her. "That's a mean name!" And he'd hated it ever since he was a cub, but for some reason people kept using it!
PostPosted: Tue Jul 12, 2016 8:12 pm
"But your name is such a mouthful, what else am I supposed to call you?" she demanded with a emphatic stomp and wearing a smile. She knew his nickname and she knew he didn't like it, it was an easy way to change the tone of the conversation they were stuck in. It was safe to have fun again and Neema was going to enjoy it, thank the Great Lion.

"Uhhh...'Varinen. That's better," he informed the lioness, trying to glower at her. It...didn't seem to be working. Maybe it was the angle of his neck, which he tried to adjust again but...owwwwww...maybe that wasn't going to help.

Still, he was not going to be called That Name. Nope.
PostPosted: Tue Jul 12, 2016 8:16 pm
"Hmmm," she said, giving him a skeptical look as he suggested his alternate nickname before shaking her head, "Too many syllables, sweetie. I don't care for that one. What else have you got?"

"Uhhhhh..."

Uh-oh. She didn't like 'Varinen? It was shorter than Yksivarinen though, so why was it a problem? But he absolutely did not want to be known by That Name, so he had to think of a new nickname, and he had to think quickly.

"Um...'Vari?" the lion at last offered hopefully.
