The Shaman was not in her den. That was a deliberate choice on her part, because she was not at all interested in being tracked down by one of the many members of her class who was putting themselves forward as the best choice for Monarch.

Some of those with the best claims had already made it clear to her and to the pride that they didn't want the title, including Liuhe, Shangyue's eldest legitimate child. She wasn't sure what Nketa wanted, but the eldest high class child was even harder to find than Lailah, though the white lioness was quiet certain that the younger female hadn't chosen to leave the pride.

Still, that left far too many lions with big mouths who were clamoring over the empty throne.

The way Lailah saw it, she had two good choices. The first, was to pick a member of the royal family who was not one of Shangyue's children. The second was to discard the current royal family entirely and find someone who was of the high class and far more deserving of elevation.

But she wasn't sure which was best.

As good as Lailah was at hiding, Neema was an excellent seeker- a trait she had gone above and beyond to prove of late, though she wasn't sure how many people would truly have noticed. She was eager to keep up with the goings-on around the pride and help out wherever she could, but so far there was no sign that her meddling had been widely noticed. With a wistful look skyward, she smiled at herself and imagined her mother would be very proud if she had remained.

What Aysu would do now that the rebellion was won and the pride was left with only her eldest daughter to guide them, Neema couldn't even begin to guess. That alone made her wonder if it wasn't for the best that she had gone away and stayed away. She loved her mother but she wasn't sure how helpful she would be to Lailah.

It remained to be seen how helpful Neema would be.

"Lailah!" she called out, having finally spotted her sister and wasting no time in rushing up to her, "Found you."

Of all the people in the pride, it was Neema. It was always Neema. The older sister sighed as the younger came near. She supposed it was clear proof that siblings always know each other best, the way Neema always managed to find her, even when Lailah went out of her way to be hidden.

"Hi Neema," she replied mournfully. Sometimes she wondered if she should just name Neema Queen, the way her sister had joked once. But no, that was a terrible idea on multiple levels, starting with the claims of enpotism that the pride would almost certainly give rise to immediately thereafter.

She didn't ask her sister the gossip what was going on. Neema would tell her without any prompting.

Neema made a face, though ever smiling, at the tone in which she was greeted. Lailah was not a Queen but she was all that the pride had in the way of leadership right now.. she ought to try harder to keep her chin up. But, in the end, she was their religious leader. Morale and appearances were by far the domain of the monarchy.. hopefully Liuhe was putting on his happy face.

"I take it you're no closer to a solution to our little problem," she said, "Have you had many more lions badgering you about their bloodlines and glowing personalities?"

She must have, otherwise she wouldn't be hiding.

Lailah raised an eyebrow at Neema. Was her sister trying to play dumb, or had she genuinely not been paying attention? If hte latter, maybe she'd been wrong. Maybe their mother wouldn't be proud of her.

"I would've thought you'd know the answer to your question already," the blue-marked lioness retorted. Really, why else would Lailah be hiding? The whole situation was a mess, and all she could do was be grateful that at least she was here to help the pride through this...transition. Ugh. In order for it to be a transition, she had to pick a new monarch. Which was so very difficult.

Finally her smile wavered at the grumpy response she got from her sister. The situation wasn't ideal but they were far from deserving that grim tone.. but perhaps that was a reflection of how Lailah had stayed neutral all through the rebellion. In all honesty, Neema was shocked there was no backlash for that, but she was grateful. And she suspected it was another thing to attribute to the differences between social and religious leadership.

"Yes, but making statements doesn't contribute much to a conversation," Neema replied with a sharp edge of her own, "And whether or not you want to talk about it, you're going to have to."

It was Lailah's right and responsibility to name a successor to the throne, but she would be foolish not to consider what others had to say on the matter. And, smart as she was, she had to know that.. she probably needed a change of topic and scenery but Neema wasn't expecting that to happen yet.

"You can talk to me about it, you know."

"By which you mean that you want to talk to me about it," the Shaman pointed out acidly. "Fine. You're here. Talk."

There were so many people to consider, and so many different factors. Lailah had tried to stay neutral for the past two years, and she could only hope that the the pride would be willing to put their faith in whomever she named. So far they seemed willing enough to forgive her not picking a side. That was all she could really ask for at the moment.

"Are you going to suggest a lion that you think should be the new ruler?"

Her smile did not return and instead, she simply stared at her sister with narrowed eyes. Neema felt quite strongly that Lailah needed an outlet for her frustration but she found herself, in the moment, unwilling to let that be her. Unfortunately, the familiarity that allowed it to come so easily for one sister was the same for the other.

"You're not alone, you know," she said, "Do you even listen when the others try to help, or have they been drowned out by the few who would put themselves forward as a candidate?"

Where were Alkina and Antara? Surely they didn't suffer as much as Lailah, but they ought to be there supporting her. And Liuhe.. he was fighting a completely different battle and likely didn't realize how much he had to offer.

Lailah snorted. "In case you didn't realize, I am alone. If I choose poorly, it will reflect upon me, as well as whomever I've chosen." She didn't answer the rest of the question. It was so hard to take advice. She did want other opinions, yes, but she couldn't allow herself to be swayed by those who were speaking only out of selfishness.

There were good people in the pride, but some of those allowed their greed and selfishness to hold sway. Others were like blades of grass, their opinions swaying to and fro with the direction of the wind.

"No, you're not alone," Neema said sternly, stomping a foot for emphasis, "Ultimately it is your decision and you, the monarch and the pride will have to live with that.. but if you're alone, it's because you choose to be."

She hadn't meant to come here to argue, it simply happened. She didn't know how else to deal with her stubbornly isolated and worried sister, this was significantly more difficult to deal with than anything she'd worked on during the rebellion.

Taking a deep breath, she made an effort to calm her voice before going on.

"You may not want my opinion and that's fine," she said, "Maybe you don't want the opinions of every Badiri, Mwezi and Iah.. but you should talk to Liuhe, or Meshach, or Ota, or Unyezi!"

There were options! Maybe Liuhe wasn't especially helpful at first but he must have had some time to work things out in his head.. and the rebellion leaders' official stances had been very relaxed but they must have had actual opinions.. and Unyezi, like Lailah, had stayed out of trouble during the whole mess but he was the closest they had left to a monarch.

"Maybe I should," Lailah sighed aloud. Her sister had listed some good options as far as gathering opinions, but she didn't want to be seen as so indecisive that she had to rely on others. Still, there was something to be said for getting the opinions of a few level-headed individuals.

It was a fine line, and no one else could walk it for her, or even with her for more than a step or two.

"Are you going to keep standing there?" the Shaman asked Neema, a note of annoyance creeping into her voice.

Just when it felt like she was making progress in the conversation, Lailah had to fall back on being annoyed that Neema was there at all. She stood there, glaring and silently considering what had been done already and what yet needed to be done.. was the shaman only being like this because they were sisters? Because they were twins?

Very suddenly, it looked like Neema might burst into tears but she said nothing and instead turned herself around and walked away.

When she was certain that Neema was finally gone, Lailah levered herself to her feet. She had been crueler than necessary to her sister, but she wasn't really in a mood to talk to the other lioness.

In fact, she was of a mind to take her twin's advice.

The Shaman was off to see the Slave Father.
