Llyn Tegid, also commonly referred to as Bala Lake, is the largest body of water in Wales, located in Gwynedd. Its name means "Lake of Serenity", and it was formed by glaciers. Locally, the lake is thought to have its own monster, "Teggie", and it is also said that on a moonlit night one can see the remnants of the palace of King Tegid underwater, whose court was said to have drowned beneath the lake long ago. Llyn Tegid is a popular yachting and kayaking destination, with two sailing clubs, and is also a protected wildlife site.
