Chapter Fourteen

Stunning Spell

__S T U P E F Y .

The Stunning Spell (Stupefy), also known as a Stunner or Stupefying Charm, is a charm that renders a victim unconscious and halts moving objects.

Effects/Limits
Commonly used in duels; it is quite useful if one's opponent is unconscious and unable to continue the duel, and is a guaranteed victory for the caster. If this spell is used by multiple wizards aiming at the same target, the damage it causes is increased. Dragons are able to shrug off a single Stunning Spell, but if multiple Stunning Spells are aimed at a dragon, they should work. It manifests itself as a jet of scarlet light. The effects of a Stunning Spell may be counteracted by Rennervate, but will also wear off with time. It can also be deflected by a Shield Charm. Species known to be naturally resistant to the spell include dragons, trolls, giants and half-giants.

History
It is unknown who invented the spell, and when.

Etymology
"Stupefy" comes from the English stupefy, which means "to stun" or "to amaze". It may also come from the Latin stupere, meaning "to be stunned".

Pronunciation

Chapter Fifteen

Full-Body Bind Curse

__P E T R I F I C U S . T O T A L U S

The Full-Body Bind Curse is also known as the Body Freezing Spell. Be sure not to confuse it for petrification.

Effects/Limits
A curse that paralyses the opponent; it is often used by inexperienced or young wizards in dueling. The victim's arms and legs snap together, and he/she will fall down, stiff as a board. However the afflicted's ability to hear, see (however straight forward), feel, and think, still work properly. The Full Body-Bind Curse is fundamentally different from petrification, which is highly advanced Dark Magic and cannot be reversed by a simple counter-curse.

History
The earliest record of this spell has been traced to Australia, causing many wizards to speculate if it had been created there or had simply migrated there during the European settlement. Substantial evidence is lacking however and has lead to much discussion and debate between scholars.

Etymology
The root of this curse's incantation seems to be the Latin words petra, "rock". Facio "make, do, cause to happen". Totus, "whole" or "entire".

Pronunciation
pe-TRI-fi-cus to-TAH-lus

Chapter Sixteen

Conclusion

Although the textbook has come to and end, users of this book should continue to practice the spells taught within. The more a caster practices, the better he or she becomes. Other tricks and skills may be gained as the caster becomes more and more familiar with their spells, wand, and unique style of magic, and will assuredly be able to achieve great lengths with the simplest of charms.

It is strongly encouraged to constantly review such spells, as it may or may not come up in future exams. After all, once a spell is learned, it should never be forgotten. I bid all of you good luck in your students, and congratulations for finishing the second book of the The Standard Book of Spells series.

Sincerely,
Miranda Goshawk
