Koo-le
The Clans

He had always been on his paws, ever since he could remember. His parents had birthed he and his siblings while they were on the move, and in his ever-present curiosity, Brightone, Safi-mmoja, got separated from his family and pack. As he wandered the Great Rift Valley, he encountered many creatures, forgot his family, found his family again, and ended up drawing to him other dogs and starting a family of his own.

He didn't mean to start a pack, but he did!

The Jobs

There aren't really 'ranks' in Koo-le. The Patron and Matron of each clan act as 'father' and 'mother' to the clan, keeping order and settling disputes. When times call for it, their word is ABSOLUTE...especially if the clan's safety is at stake. One's elders are always given respect, and Scholars and Fortune-tellers are given as much respect as an elder...even if they're younger than you.

Patron: This title is added to the front of the dog's normal title. The Patron of a clan acts as a father to all the dogs of it. With the Matron, he settles disputes among his clan, and ensures the rules of the clan are followed. Some would think he and the Matron are above the rules...of all the dogs, they are the most bound by them.

Matron: This title is added to the front of the dog's normal title. The Matron of a clan acts as a mother to all the dogs of it. With the Patron, she settles disputes among her clan, and ensures the rules of the clan are followed. Some would think she and the Patron are above the rules...of all the dogs, they are the most bound by them.

Fortune-Teller: The Seers of the Clans. They are able to part the curtains of the Barakoa, to see the past and future, and often train themselves to be able to do so at their discretion. Sometimes, however, a Fortune-teller is never able to control her abilities, or they are still gripped by visions at random times.

Scholar: Knowledge is wealth. Koo-le understand that all too well, and because of it, those among them with a talent for gathering and keeping that knowledge are given great respect. The clan Scholars are still expected to help out with duties...but their responsibilities are light outside their pursuit for knowledge.

Crafter: If there's one thing Koo-le love...it's pretty trinkets. And the Crafters excel at making said pretty trinkets. Most go to Koo-le, especially at the Sherehe. But a few of the trinkets they make are used as gifts for, and in deals with, Outsiders.

Entertainer: If you're lucky to be near a clan while they're 'camped' for a night, you're most likely to see the Entertainers first. Dancers, singers, acrobats, and storytellers fall into this category, and they're all GOOD at what they do. They tend to be the most light-hearted of Koo-le, no matter what clan they're from!

Hunter: These are the dogs who not only hunt down food for Koo-le, but also track down materials for the Crafters to use. They work well in groups, and tend to be a bit prideful in their skills. ALL outsiders joining Koo-le start out as Hunters.

Fighter: The guards of Koo-le. The off-shift Fighters often help out with hunting, and it isn't uncommon to see them running errands for the Healers. Like the Hunters, they do tend to be a bit prideful.

Healer: Never piss off a Healer. Every clan member learns that early on. Despite their generally kind demeanor, the Healers can and will make their doctoring a bit more painful than necessary if you piss them off. And rue the idiot who decides to try and harm their clan...they may find themselves poisoned.

Youth: The pups and juveniles of Koo-le. They are encouraged to explore the various paths, to find what suits them best. They are also encouraged to play their little hearts out. Puphood is such a fleeting thing, after all.

Oath-kin: Those non-dogs adopted into Koo-le take this title in front of whatever job they choose. This reflects that although they are not dogs, they ARE part of Koo-le, as their children will be if they choose the Tawili'ndia. If one is born from an Oath-kin and chooses the Tawili'ndia, they, too, take this title in front of their job.

The Laws

The Clan is family. Family first. Members of Koo-le's various clans treat each other as family...and like a family, if an outsider interferes, they will stop their bickering and come down hard on the outsider. Koo-le members' word is also given more weight than an outsiders, since the outsider is 'not family'.

Respect boundaries. This law applies to both physical and personal boundaries. The punishment for breaking boundaries depends on the circumstances and severity of the offense. For example, accidentally wandering into a pride's territory without permission is just a few harsh words, while rape is worthy of Outcasting.

Heed those wiser than you. Those older than oneself, Scholars, and Fortune-tellers tend to have seen more than oneself. One does not have to do what they say...but they are expected to take the wiser words into consideration. Even the Matron and Patron take others' wisdom into account.

More once my brain can think of it.

Life in Koo-le

Mating. Mating is a big thing for the Koo-le. It means you're sticking with another dog(s) for good, and though your eyes might stray, other parts won't. Matings can be quiet affairs...or big celebrations, depending on the dogs involved...and their families! Mating outside the Koo-le is considered bad luck, but the outsider mate CAN earn their way into the clan. Though rare, polyamorous matings can happen and aren't frowned upon. As long as everyone involved is loyal and communicates.

Flings. Flings happen. As long as said flings are BEFORE a dog is mated, it doesn't matter...though the dog IS expected to be part of their pups' lives. If the pair involved happens to be just a wee unready for parenthood, the parents of either dog tend to step in and take care of the young ones.

Chores. When a clan 'sets up camp', there are chores to do around it...cleaning, helping Scholars and Crafters, watching the pups...The entire clan helps out...even the little ones have small chores to do!

The Barakoa. The Veil. It is that which lies between the world of what is, and the world of what was and what shall be. According to Koo-le dogs, anyways!

Outsiders. Outsiders are treated with friendly suspicion. One is never sure what an outsider will do...but the Koo-le refuse to be seen as insular. After all...they can't afford to make the world their enemy.

Tawili'ndia. The Long Road. Koo-le wild dogs have no land of their own, and their paws lead them on this great journey across the changing landscape of the Great Rift Valley...and sometimes beyond. Traveling like this has made them longer-legged and with better endurance than their stationary cousins.

Serehe. Once a year, at Summer Solstice, the clans all converge on one point, decided by all current Matrons and Patrons, and have a great festival. This is where they trade wares, cement alliances, and welcome outsiders to trade with them.

Outcasting. When a severe offense, such as rape or abuse, occurs, the offending member of the clan is brought before the Matron and Patron. With the eyes of the entire clan on him or her, the offender's crime is told and the offender given a last chance to speak for themselves. This, however, is just a formality...by this point, the offender has been proven guilty. After the offender has spoken, the Patron claws him or her on the right side of his or her flanks, and the Matron does the same on the left. Then, with Fighters at either side, the offender is led to the edges of the 'camp' and chased off. Any Outcast is treated as worse than an outsider...even the normally jovial Entertainers view them as scum for what they have done.
